Hire an AI SEO agency only if it can show relevant experience, explain the work it will do, and tie that work to measurable business goals. No agency can guarantee Google rankings or citations in AI-generated answers. For a small local business with manageable needs, Google says much of the work may be possible in-house.
What an AI SEO agency can—and cannot—do
“AI SEO” is an umbrella label, not a separate route around the fundamentals of search. A provider may use it for work aimed at visibility in AI search experiences, also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). Google’s guidance says that, for Google Search, optimizing for generative AI features is still SEO: pages need useful, distinctive content and sound technical foundations.
An agency may help with technical SEO, content, market research, international or local needs, or a site launch. It cannot promise a particular ranking or guarantee that an AI answer will cite your business. Google says eligibility for its generative AI features depends on technical requirements, including being indexed and eligible for Search snippets, but meeting those requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or display. Google’s guide to generative AI features in Search explains the scope and limits.
When hiring is likely to make sense
- You are redesigning or launching a site. Bringing an SEO in early can help account for search considerations while the site is being planned and built.
- Your needs exceed your team’s time or expertise. This may include technical problems, content strategy, a new market or location, international SEO, or connecting search work to business development.
- You need a tailored plan. A credible provider asks about your business, customers, competitors, goals, and how search contributes to sales before recommending work.
Google notes that an SEO may improve visibility and save time, but irresponsible work can harm a site’s visibility and reputation. You remain responsible for what a hired provider does on your site. See Google’s hiring guidance for its advice on choosing an SEO.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When doing the work in-house may be enough
If you run a small local business and have manageable SEO needs, you may be able to do much of the work yourself. Start with Google’s SEO Starter Guide and Search Console, which provides first-party information about your site’s performance in Google Search.
In-house work is also a reasonable choice if a prospective agency cannot explain what it proposes to change, why those changes matter, how results will be measured, or what it needs from you. Do not pay for a package just because it uses “AI,” “AEO,” or “GEO” in its name.

How to compare agencies before you hire
Ask the same questions of each provider so you can compare their answers. Google recommends checking references and asking past clients whether the work was useful, what the working relationship was like, and what results they saw.

|---|---|---|
| Relevant experience | Have you worked with businesses in my industry and market? What did you personally do? | Specific examples, clear responsibilities, and references; international experience if your business needs it. |
| Methods and policy alignment | How do your recommendations align with Google’s Search Essentials and AI-search guidance? | Reasoned explanations and a clear distinction between documented guidance and the agency’s opinion. |
| Expected outcomes | What outcomes do you expect, on what timeframe, and how will we measure them? | A realistic estimate, a baseline, and a measurement plan—not a ranking or citation guarantee. |
| Audit scope | What will you review, what will the audit deliver, and how much implementation work is involved? | Prioritized recommendations, realistic work estimates, and read-only Search Console access for an initial audit. |
| Communication and control | How often will you report? Will you disclose changes before making them? | Detailed explanations, a change log, and a clear approval process. |
| Business fit | How will you learn about our customers, competitors, and business goals? | Questions that show the provider is designing work for your situation rather than selling a fixed package. |
| AI-search claims | What does “AI SEO,” AEO, or GEO mean in your proposal, and how will you monitor its results? | Foundational SEO work and measurable objectives, without unsupported technical tricks or promises of citations. |
Red flags that should stop the conversation
- A guaranteed Google ranking. Google’s advice is direct: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.”
- Claims of privileged access. Be wary of supposed special relationships with Google, priority submission, or secret methods.
- An unsolicited pitch. Google warns about unexpected SEO solicitations; independently verify the sender and claims.
- Unexplained work or secrecy. Require a plain-language explanation of planned changes, particularly if the provider will have server access.
- Mass link building or bulk search-engine submissions. Google says link-popularity schemes and submissions to thousands of search engines are typically useless and can be harmful.
- Large batches of unchecked AI pages. Generating many pages without adding value for users may violate Google’s scaled-content-abuse policy. Review generated content and metadata for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.
Google’s spam policies describe prohibited practices, while its guidance on generative AI content explains why the quality and purpose of the content matter.

Protect your site during an audit
For an initial audit, grant Search Console read access only—not write access. Ask the agency to explain its recommendations before approving changes, and make sure you know what it intends to alter. This lets you assess the provider’s work without handing over more control than the audit requires.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge claims about AI search
Ask the provider to translate “AI visibility” into concrete work: for example, improving whether pages can be crawled, making content more useful and distinctive, or clarifying relevant product and local-business information. Ask how it will monitor outcomes and what evidence supports its forecasts.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not treat a third-party tool’s score or prediction as Google data. Google says outside tools do not have access to its internal ranking data, and forecasts may not happen. Use Search Console for first-party information about Google Search performance, and check agency claims against Google’s current AI-features documentation.
Google’s guidance also does not call for special technical shortcuts such as adding an llms.txt file as a Search signal, splitting content into tiny chunks, rewriting pages only for AI, or adding special schema for generative AI features. Nor does it prescribe a particular page length or exact-query variation strategy. Prioritize useful content and accessible pages over offers built around these supposed requirements.

A practical hiring decision
- Define the business need. Identify the problem or opportunity—such as a launch, technical issue, local visibility, or new market—that the provider should address.
- Interview more than one provider. Ask about relevant work, recommendations, expected outcomes, timeframes, measurement, reporting, and references.
- Check the plan and the access request. Confirm that recommendations are understandable and that an initial audit needs only read access to Search Console.
- Reject guarantees and unsupported AI claims. Do not proceed if the pitch depends on guaranteed rankings, special Google access, unexplained tactics, or promises of AI citations.
- Choose based on fit and accountability. Hire if the provider offers a tailored, measurable plan you can evaluate; otherwise, start with Google’s free guidance and handle manageable work in-house.
