There is no reliable one-size-fits-all price for owning a Tesla. Your total depends on the exact model and trim, where you live, how much you drive, how long you keep it, how you finance it, where you charge, and what insurers quote for your household. Build the estimate from those inputs rather than relying on a generic monthly-cost figure.

Choose what “total cost” means

Two useful totals answer different questions. Cash outlay tracks the money you pay during ownership, such as the purchase price, loan payments, insurance, charging, taxes, and upkeep. Net ownership cost subtracts the vehicle’s estimated resale proceeds from the costs over your chosen period.

For net ownership cost, use this framework:

Net ownership cost = purchase and transaction costs + financing interest + insurance premiums + charging + maintenance and tires + repairs outside warranty + taxes and registration + home charging equipment and installation − estimated resale proceeds.

Divide by the number of years or months you plan to own the car for an average annual or monthly view. Keep loan accounting consistent: if you count the full purchase price, add financing interest—not loan principal a second time. For a cash-flow budget, instead show the down payment and scheduled payments as they occur.

Gather your personal inputs first

Write down the assumptions before comparing estimates. A small change in mileage, insurance coverage, or charging habits can materially change the result.

  • Vehicle: exact model, trim, transaction price, and any actual discounts.
  • Ownership: planned years of ownership and annual miles.
  • Purchase method: cash, loan, or lease, with upfront costs and financing terms treated consistently.
  • Insurance: quotes for the same drivers, address, coverage limits, deductibles, and expected use.
  • Charging: estimated share of energy from home, Superchargers, work, or other public charging, plus the rates that apply.
  • Other costs: sales tax, registration, maintenance, tires, uncovered repairs, home charging installation, and likely resale value.

Estimate charging costs

For home charging, calculate the energy needed from your annual mileage and the exact vehicle’s energy-use estimate. If efficiency is given in kWh per 100 miles, divide by 100 to get kWh per mile.

Annual home charging cost = annual miles × kWh per mile × share of energy charged at home × effective home electricity rate.

Use the marginal rate for additional electricity, not simply your whole-house average bill divided by household kWh. If your utility has time-of-use pricing, base the estimate on when the car will actually charge. Include a fixed plan charge only if it is an incremental cost for your household.

Price public charging separately

Do not apply a made-up nationwide Supercharger price. Tesla says the relevant price is shown at the Supercharger pin in the vehicle touchscreen or app; it can differ by site and time, and billing may be per kWh or per minute. Check likely routes and locations for current prices: Tesla Supercharger fees.

Use charging records to refine the estimate

After purchase, Tesla Charge Stats can help track energy and estimated costs across home, Supercharger, work, and other locations. Tesla says home costs use the utility rate entered in the app; Supercharger costs come from Tesla account billing, while work and other values may use regional estimates that owners can customize. Review the configured rates before treating the display as a precise cost record: Tesla charging costs and Charge Stats.

Include home equipment and installation

A home charger’s purchase price is not the installed cost. The property may need permits, inspections, longer wiring, a panel upgrade, or trenching. Tesla lists Mobile Connector, Wall Connector, and Universal Wall Connector options; check compatibility for the exact vehicle and property, then request a certified installer’s quote: Tesla home charging.

Check local utility and government incentives before calculating the net setup cost. Programs and eligibility depend on location; Tesla’s incentive information is a starting point, not a guarantee that you qualify: Tesla incentives.

Some electricity plans bundle charging into a distinct tariff. For example, Tesla describes an Electric Drive Plan for eligible markets in Texas with a fixed monthly fee for charging during specified hours and other bill components for usage outside those hours. Treat it as a location-specific example and confirm current eligibility and terms locally: Tesla Texas Electric Drive Plan.

Get insurance quotes for the exact car and driver

Insurance should be priced before you commit to buying. Ask multiple insurers to quote the exact vehicle, garaging address, drivers, annual mileage, liability limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, and any rental or roadside options you want. Compare the annual premium and coverage details—not just an advertised or teaser monthly payment.

Premiums are personal and location-specific, so a generic Tesla insurance figure is not your quote. Tesla Insurance availability and policy options vary by state; confirm current offerings and prices directly. A safety feature or software option does not guarantee a discount. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners notes that possible EV insurance-cost factors include vehicle value, specialized repair needs, battery repair or replacement, parts availability, and access to repair facilities. These factors do not predict an individual driver’s premium: NAIC guidance on insuring an electric vehicle.

For guidance on comparing and reviewing quotes, consult your state insurance regulator. The Texas Department of Insurance, for example, provides a consumer guide to shopping for auto coverage: Texas Department of Insurance auto insurance shopping guide.

Account for the rest of ownership

The vehicle price and monthly payment are only part of the budget. Consumer.gov identifies costs such as sales tax, state registration fees, insurance, fuel, and maintenance, and notes that borrowing adds interest: Consumer.gov guidance on car costs. For a fuller estimate, add tires, repairs not covered by warranty, and home charging equipment and installation. Include resale value if you are calculating net ownership cost.

For a structured comparison, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center vehicle cost calculator can compare up to eight vehicles using driving habits and vehicle inputs. Treat its result as an estimate, not a quote or guaranteed outcome, and replace generic assumptions with your actual transaction price, local electricity rates, mileage, financing, and insurance quotes wherever the calculator allows: DOE AFDC vehicle cost calculator.

Compare vehicles on equal terms

A Tesla-versus-Tesla or Tesla-versus-gasoline comparison is useful only when the assumptions match. Keep these inputs consistent:

  • Ownership period and annual mileage.
  • Purchase price after actual discounts, taxes, and fees.
  • Cash, loan, or lease treatment, including interest and upfront amounts.
  • Insurance coverage limits, deductibles, drivers, and included options.
  • Home and public charging mix and local electricity rates; for a gasoline vehicle, local fuel price and realistic fuel economy.
  • Maintenance, tires, warranty coverage, and repairs.
  • Resale-value assumption and whether the result represents gross cash outlay or net cost.

Costs and policy details vary across countries and across U.S. states. Use local rates and rules, and make each assumption visible so you can update the estimate when a quote or price changes.
