To estimate the total cost of storing data in DNA, tape, or a cloud archive, model the same dataset, copies, retention period, retrieval pattern, and service requirements for all three. Add write or ingest, storage, operations, migrations, reads and restores, transfer, and end-of-life costs over that period. A price per TB-month alone cannot tell you which option costs less for your workload.

Set one workload and accounting horizon

Start with a workload specification that every option must meet. Choose decimal TB or binary TiB and use that unit consistently; then record:

  • Starting capacity, annual growth, and whether ingest is continuous or a one-time event.
  • Retention period, number of independent copies, and where each copy is kept.
  • Expected reads: amount, frequency, routine analytics, test restores, and disaster-recovery restores.
  • Required recovery time, access latency, read throughput, durability, security, and immutability controls.
  • Whether the estimate includes staff, software, equipment, power, cooling, floor space, networking, and migration.
  • Whether compression, deduplication, and redundancy are assumed, and how much usable capacity they provide.

For a growing archive, model capacity year by year. If capacity rises during a year, use the average stored capacity for that year or track the actual monthly capacity. Do not multiply the final archive size by the entire retention period: that overstates storage time for data added later. Count every required copy in capacity and cost.

Use a lifecycle cost model

For each option, calculate the cost across the selected horizon using the same workload assumptions:

#1 Best Overall
HPE StoreEver Tape Autoloader, 8 Slot, 1U
  • Number of Cartridge Slots: 8 slots provide ample capacity for organizing and storing multiple tape cartridges efficiently
  • Drive Type: LTO technology ensures reliable and high-performance data storage and retrieval for enterprise environments
  • Native Storage Capacity: 360 TB native capacity delivers extensive storage space for long-term data retention and backup requirements
  • Encryption: Built-in encryption capability protects sensitive data against unauthorized access even if tapes are lost or stolen
  • Formats Supported: LTO-6 (Read/Write) and LTO-9 compatibility provides flexible media options for various backup and archival needs

Lifecycle TCO = ingest or write + storage and infrastructure + operations and maintenance + migration or refresh + reads and restores + transfer or delivery + end-of-life costs.

Include a term only where it applies, but do not silently treat an uncertain or excluded term as free. Label exclusions and run a sensitivity case when a cost is unknown. Report both the total over the horizon and a normalized figure, such as dollars per TB-year. Define TB-years as the sum of capacity stored over time: for example, 10 TB kept for one full year contributes 10 TB-years. If copies are part of the cost, state whether the denominator also counts logical data once or all physical copies.

Build a year-by-year worksheet

  1. List capacity written, capacity retained, and number of copies for each year or month.
  2. Calculate storage or media capacity needed, including encoding, redundancy, compression, and spare capacity assumptions.
  3. Add write, ingest, equipment, software, staffing, energy, facilities, and other operating costs in the years they occur.
  4. Add planned refreshes or migrations, including the labor and temporary capacity needed to complete them.
  5. Add expected reads, restore staging, delivery or network transfer, and recovery tests.
  6. Sum the costs and divide by the stated TB-year denominator; retain the absolute total alongside the normalized result.

Estimate cloud archive costs

Cloud archive charges can include more than stored volume. Price the chosen provider, region, storage class, and workload with a current provider calculator, then include every relevant charge in the estimate. Google Cloud separates storage, data processing—which can include operations, retrieval, and inter-region replication—and network usage. Its pricing documentation says retrieval fees are additional to applicable operations and network charges (Google Cloud Storage pricing).

Model storage class and access behavior together

A lower storage rate may come with slower access or added retrieval and restore charges. AWS describes these archive options as follows; these are service descriptions, not guarantees for the end-to-end time of a particular restore workflow (AWS data archiving overview):

  • Secure Data Protection: Barium Ferrite technology provides reliable data security
  • Professional Grade: Meets demanding requirements for business-critical information storage
  • Cost Efficient: Reduces per-gigabyte storage costs compared to disk-based solutions
AWS archive option Access description from AWS What to model
S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval Milliseconds Storage, retrieval, operations, and any applicable transfer or other charges.
S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval Minutes, or free bulk retrieval in 5–12 hours The retrieval method your workload will use, along with storage, requests, staging, and transfer.
S3 Glacier Deep Archive Retrieval within twelve hours Storage, retrieval workflow, requests, staging, and delivery costs, with recovery time considered.

AWS advertises archive pricing “about $1 per terabyte per month” as a starting point. That vendor headline is not a complete quote or lifecycle estimate: region, storage class, retrieval, requests, transitions, transfer, and retention rules affect the result. Check the current pricing for the exact region and workload rather than treating the headline as a universal rate.

Add charges beyond stored capacity

  • Requests and processing: include write, read, listing, retrieval, and lifecycle operations where billed.
  • Retrieval and restore: calculate the volume retrieved, the applicable retrieval method, and any temporary restore or staging storage.
  • Replication and transfer: include second-region or cross-account copies, inter-region movement, and outbound delivery to users or another system.
  • Transitions and retention rules: include lifecycle transitions, minimum storage durations, and early deletion effects that apply to the chosen class.
  • Administration: if in scope, count labor to maintain policies, encryption keys, monitoring, access controls, and tested recovery procedures.

For a useful estimate, price the same copy count and restore scenario used for tape and DNA. A workload that rarely reads data is not comparable to one that restores a large share every year.

Estimate on-premises tape costs

Tape cost includes the media and the system that writes, protects, stores, and restores it. Separate fixed costs—such as drives, a library, servers, software, and installation—from variable costs such as cartridges, staff time, energy, vaulting, and transport. Fixed overhead can weigh more heavily at lower capacity or shorter retention; at larger scale, spreading it over more TB-years may change the comparison. There is no universal tape break-even capacity.

Include the full tape lifecycle

  • Usable media capacity: estimate cartridge count after accounting for copies, compression assumptions, redundancy, spare media, and any capacity reserved for recovery.
  • Hardware and interfaces: include compatible drives, robotics or library slots, servers, controllers, and connectivity, plus installation and planned refresh.
  • Software and support: include archive software, licensing, maintenance, and vendor support if required.
  • Operations and facilities: count administration, power, cooling, floor space, inventory, and handling.
  • Off-site protection: include vaulting or transport, media checks, and procedures for retrieving off-site copies.
  • Migration and restoration: model movement to newer generations or replacement media, restore labor, restore time, and the temporary resources needed during migration.

The LTO Consortium assumptions page is useful as a checklist of cost categories, not as a current quote: its sample cloud and cartridge pricing inputs are from 1Q 2017. Actual enterprise designs differ, so use current supplier and operating costs for your scenario.

Estimate DNA archive costs

For DNA storage, separate the cost of turning digital data into a physical record from the cost of preserving that record and later reading it. A cost per encoded data unit is meaningful only after accounting for code overhead, error correction, redundancy, and the sequencing or other read coverage needed to recover the data.

Count writing, preservation, and reading

  • Encoding and write path: include digital-to-DNA encoding, error correction, synthesis, write throughput, and any service or equipment cost for producing the molecules.
  • Physical materials: include oligos or other substrates, containers, reagents, and packaging.
  • Preservation and handling: include storage environment, energy, labor, inventory, and any preservation or monitoring requirements assumed.
  • Read path: include sequencing or another readout method, required coverage, reagents, decoding, error recovery, and delivery of the recovered digital data.
  • Equipment and scale: include instruments, automation, maintenance, throughput limits, and the labor needed to operate the workflow.

Model read/write service assumptions separately from physical preservation cost. Retrieval volume, turnaround time, and read coverage can change the economics even when the stored molecules are unchanged. The 2023 IEEE International Roadmap for Devices and Systems identifies materials and reagents, labor and resource use, handling and automation equipment, error-rate optimization, and workflow interfaces as cost factors; it also said DNA data storage was not yet ready for productization at that time (2023 IRDS Mass Data Storage).

Published DNA comparisons should be treated as scenario models, not current tariffs. The DNA Data Storage Alliance’s 2021 comparison modeled a 1 PB case with selected DNA price scenarios and AWS public pricing dated 2021-02-01. Its figure covered writing and storage rather than retrieval, assumed no periodic DNA migration, and treated fixity-check and energy costs as nominal; retrieval was excluded because it depends on use case (DNA Data Storage Alliance overview). Those assumptions can be useful to understand a model, but its bars are not a current market comparison.

A 2026 preprint by Alex El-Shaikh and coauthors concludes that, under the cost trajectories they model, DNA storage would need costs to fall by eight to nine orders of magnitude to compete with contemporary archival technologies (An Economic Analysis of DNA-based Data Storage Systems). This is the paper’s modeled result, not an independently observed universal price gap.

Compare the three options on equivalent terms

Use a common comparison table and identify which cost assumptions drive each total. The categories below are a checklist; the amounts must come from your workload and current quotes or measured operating inputs, not from a generic price-per-TB claim.

Cost or requirement Cloud archive Tape DNA archive
Write or ingest Upload, requests, and any applicable processing or replication. Drives, software, staff time, and media used to write copies. Encoding, error correction, synthesis, materials, and write throughput.
Ongoing storage Stored capacity by class and region, including copies. Cartridges, library capacity, facilities, and off-site storage. Substrates, containers, preservation, handling, and monitoring.
Read or restore Retrieval, operations, restore staging, and delivery or network transfer. Retrieval labor, drive/library availability, and media transport. Readout or sequencing, coverage, decoding, error recovery, and delivery.
Refresh or migration Transitions, transfers, or copy changes where needed. Media-generation migration, hardware refresh, and migration labor. Migration assumptions must be stated; do not assume it is needed or cost-free without support.
Operations and service Account, policy, security, monitoring, and recovery operations if in scope. Hardware, software, maintenance, power, space, staff, and recovery arrangements. Labor, instruments, automation, reagents, energy, and workflow maturity.

Stress-test the result before choosing

Calculate low, base, and high cases for uncertain inputs rather than presenting a single total as certain. At minimum, vary retrieval share, archive growth, labor and energy, migration interval, cloud region and egress, copy count, and DNA write and read costs. For each case, show the total horizon cost and cost per TB-year, then compare:

  • Lifecycle cost at the modeled scale and retention period.
  • Restore latency, read throughput, and restore cost against the required recovery target.
  • Operational labor and complexity, including recovery tests and migration work.
  • Resilience, durability, security, immutability, and recovery arrangements.
  • Technology maturity and dependence on a provider, hardware generation, media format, or specialist read workflow.

If you calculate a break-even point, show the inputs that produce it and test whether it moves when retention or retrieval changes. A result based on one copy, a particular region, or rare retrieval should not be generalized to workloads with different assumptions.
