There is no single monthly price for a 24/7 YouTube stream: the cost depends on whether you encode on a local computer and send the stream to YouTube, or pay for a cloud workflow that also packages and distributes video to viewers. To estimate it, map the services you actually use, calculate their charges for the billing period, and include audience delivery only if you host distribution separately from YouTube.
Start with the signal path, not a headline price
Write down where each part of the stream runs. A common creator setup encodes video locally and sends a contribution feed to YouTube. A separate cloud-hosted workflow may add cloud encoding, ingest, packaging or origination, storage, and CDN delivery. Those are different architectures with different bills; CDN viewer-delivery charges are not a universal fee for streaming to YouTube.
- Map the path: identify the computer or hardware encoding the stream, the destination YouTube receives it at, and any separate cloud playback or distribution service.
- List only billable components that are present: include encoding, channel-active time, ingest, packaging, storage, egress or CDN delivery, redundancy, and fixed charges as applicable.
- Mark what is outside the estimate: decide whether local internet, electricity, equipment, labor, taxes, and contingency are included. There is no evidence-based universal total that includes these reader-specific costs.
A useful cloud-workflow formula is: monthly estimate = active encoding/channel charges + ingest charges + packaging/origination charges + eligible storage charges + distribution/egress charges + redundancy and fixed charges.
Calculate the time and video profile
Use the actual billing period
A 30-day month contains 720 hours of continuous operation. For another billing period, use its actual hours. Check whether each provider rounds active time or has a minimum charge: Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation, for example, describes a ten-minute minimum and rounds active duration to the nearest minute after that minimum. Google Cloud’s current pricing page should be checked for the chosen region and configuration.

Record the stream settings
For every output you plan to encode, note resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. A multi-bitrate ladder may mean multiple billable outputs. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can sustain, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health; it also transcodes live streams into formats suited to viewers on different devices and networks. Include resilience choices
Note whether the design uses one pipeline or redundant pipelines, and whether failover or duplicate ingest creates additional billed resources. A resilient design may cost more than a single pipeline; do not compare its estimate with a single-pipeline price as if they were equivalent.

Model audience delivery only when you host it
If viewers watch a separately hosted stream, estimate viewer-hours and average watched bitrate, not just peak concurrent viewers. Peak audience and average audience are not interchangeable. Include the provider’s CDN cache-hit or egress assumptions, and model origin traffic separately if it is billed.

This uses decimal gigabytes as an approximation. Multiply the estimated volume by the applicable regional CDN or egress rate, checking the provider’s metering convention. Adaptive-bitrate viewing, cache behavior, protocol overhead, and billing units can change the result, so use a provider calculator or billing telemetry for a quote.
Use vendor examples as scenarios, not universal prices

These figures describe specific provider scenarios, not a market-wide price. Rates depend on service, region, configuration, redundancy, and usage, so record the rate-check date and currency when building an estimate.

Build a low, expected, and high estimate
Where audience demand or average watched bitrate is uncertain, calculate three cases rather than presenting false precision.
- Low: use a modest expected audience and watched bitrate, one pipeline if that meets your needs, and realistic cache assumptions.
- Expected: use your best estimate of viewer-hours, output profile, region, and resilience design.
- High: test higher audience and bitrate assumptions, lower cache efficiency, or the redundant pipeline you might need during growth.
For each case, show the billable hours or usage, the rate and region used, whether the rate recurs, and exclusions such as taxes, local internet, electricity, equipment, or labor. Recheck live provider pricing immediately before committing: historical worked examples are not current quotes.

Compare architectures on equal terms
Before comparing providers or methods, make sure the totals include the same functions. An encoding-only monthly charge is not comparable to an estimate that includes CDN delivery. Compare:
- Local versus cloud encoding.
- Single versus redundant pipeline.
- Resolution, codec, frame rate, and required output ladder.
- Provider region, billing currency, and current rate date.
- Channel-active billing versus ingest- or output-based billing.
- Whether storage, packaging, origin, viewer distribution, or egress is charged.
- Expected viewer-hours, watched bitrate, and CDN cache assumptions.
Google Cloud’s published per-channel quotas include input and output resolution and bitrate limits. Its documentation also says a channel may restart after 24 hours in an active state, an operational detail to account for in a continuous workflow. Check current limits and behavior in Google Cloud Live Stream API quotas.
