To estimate the electricity charge for a 24/7 YouTube stream, multiply the setup’s average power draw in kilowatts by the hours it runs, then by your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour: cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × dollars per kWh. Use a measured wattage for the equipment you want to count and the per-kWh rate on your own utility bill; there is no single reliable wattage or cost for every streaming setup.

Calculate energy use and cost

Watts measure power at a point in time; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy used over time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains the units in its electricity measurement guide.

  1. Convert average power draw to kilowatts: watts ÷ 1,000.
  2. Multiply by the number of operating hours to get kWh: kilowatts × hours.
  3. Multiply the kWh by your electricity price in dollars per kWh to estimate the energy charge.

For continuous operation, a 30-day month is 720 hours and a 365-day year is 8,760 hours. These are arithmetic totals; calendar months differ, so use the actual hours for the period you are estimating.

Worked example: assumed 100 W and $0.20 per kWh

These inputs are hypothetical, not a typical-PC benchmark or a measurement. At an assumed average draw of 100 W, the system uses 0.1 kW. Over 720 hours, that is 72 kWh; at an assumed $0.20 per kWh, the energy charge is $14.40. Over 8,760 hours, it uses 876 kWh and costs $175.20 in energy charges. Substitute your measured draw and bill rate for a personal estimate.

Measure the equipment’s actual power draw

Do not treat a computer’s power-supply rating as its operating consumption. That rating describes the supply’s capacity, not what the machine draws while streaming. Power use varies by hardware and workload, and the reviewed official sources do not establish a generic wattage for a 24/7 YouTube streaming PC.

Measurement method What it can tell you Limits to check
Plug-in electricity usage monitor For compatible plug-connected equipment, it can measure the device’s draw and may report accumulated energy as well. Confirm it supports your equipment and reports the units and time detail you need. A single-device reading does not automatically include the rest of the setup.
Utility smart meter or portal May provide interval use; some advanced smart meters can track individual-device use, according to the EIA. Capabilities and time resolution vary by utility. Check whether the data isolates the equipment or covers the premises as a whole.
Manufacturer telemetry or an assumption Can provide an estimate when direct measurement is unavailable. Label it as an estimate and check that it reflects the operating workload and the equipment included.

Where possible, measure while the actual streaming workload is running over a representative interval. Use average draw, not a momentary peak, for the formula. The EIA describes electricity measurement but does not endorse a specific retail monitor.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

Use the rate that matches your utility bill

For a personal estimate, use the applicable per-kWh price on your current bill or tariff. If you have time-of-use pricing, calculate a weighted rate that reflects when the equipment runs. Decide whether to include variable delivery, adjustment, or other per-kWh charges, and state what you included. Keep fixed monthly customer charges separate: they generally do not change just because one more device is running.

For a broad comparison, the EIA’s Electric Power Monthly publishes state and end-use-sector average-price data in Table 5.6.A. The page listed July 2026 data, released September 24, 2026. These averages are benchmarks, not a substitute for an individual customer’s tariff: the EIA describes average retail prices as weighted averages based on revenue and sales, and its reported revenue can include components beyond an individual customer’s marginal per-kWh charge. Be clear about what the estimate includes

Count the equipment at your premises that you intend to include: for example, the encoder PC or dedicated encoder, and any capture or audio equipment that stays powered. Add the router, modem, or other gear if you want a whole-setup estimate. For the incremental cost caused by streaming, exclude devices that would remain on anyway; for total setup cost, include them and say so.

This is a creator-side electricity estimate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers encoder settings and says YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for different devices and networks. It does not quantify the creator’s PC draw or YouTube’s remote infrastructure. Do not add viewers’ playback devices or YouTube’s remote processing to the electricity charge for your own home or premises.

Interpret the result and compare operating options

  • The estimate scales linearly: double the average watts, hours, or rate and the calculated energy charge doubles.
  • Actual wattage depends on the equipment and workload; a measured operating setup is more defensible than a universal “streaming watts” figure.
  • The result is an energy-charge estimate, not necessarily the entire utility bill. Your bill may include fixed charges and other items outside the calculation.

If you are deciding whether to keep hardware running locally or use a hosted streaming service, compare the measured local electricity cost with service fees, hardware purchase and replacement, storage needs, uptime needs, internet and household-power dependencies, and the control you need. Electricity cost alone does not determine which operating model is cheaper overall.
