Measure the mini PC’s average electricity draw at the wall while it runs your local AI workload, measure idle or sleep separately if it stays powered, then multiply each state’s energy use by your electricity rate. For one operating mode, the estimate is cost = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × price per kWh. This estimates electricity attributable to the computer; it does not include the purchase price, cooling, internet, or fixed bill charges.

What to measure—and where

For a practical estimate of the mini PC itself, measure the complete computer at the wall, including its power supply. CPU or GPU telemetry can explain component activity, but it does not represent the whole system’s mains draw. Decide whether a display or other peripherals belong in your estimate; include them in the measurement only if you want to cost the larger setup.

A plug-in electricity usage monitor can show instantaneous watts and, ideally, accumulated energy. Check that it is electrically compatible with your region and can measure energy as well as power. No particular meter is required; the important point is to use a consistent, wall-side measurement boundary.

Capture representative activity

Run the local model and prompts in a way that resembles your intended use. A single instantaneous reading may miss variation during generation or between prompts. The U.S. Department of Energy’s standby-measurement guidance summarizes the approach for fluctuating consumption: “If power consumption fluctuates, energy consumption should be measured over a period of time and then divided by the measurement period to determine average power.” DOE FEMP’s Measuring Standby Power also discusses instrument resolution in a standby-measurement context: 0.01 W or less below 10 W, and 0.1 W or less above 10 W through 100 W. Those figures are not a blanket buying specification for every consumer plug meter.

  • Built for Local AI and Advanced Workflows – The BOSGAME M5 AI Mini PC is powered by AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 16 cores, 32 threads, up to 5.1GHz, 50 TOPS NPU performance and up to 126 TOPS total AI performance. It is designed for local AI inference, private AI assistants, coding, data analysis, virtualization, content creation and demanding multitasking while keeping sensitive data on the device.
  • 128GB Unified Memory for Large Models and Creative Projects – M5 includes 128GB LPDDR5X-8000 unified memory, giving the CPU and Radeon 8060S graphics access to a large shared memory pool. This helps support memory-intensive AI workloads, large project files, multiple virtual machines, 3D work, video editing and complex professional applications without the capacity limits of typical 32GB or 64GB mini computers.
  • Radeon 8060S Graphics for Creation, Rendering and Gaming – Integrated Radeon 8060S graphics with 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units delivers high-end visual performance without a separate graphics card. Use the M5 creator workstation for 4K video editing, 3D rendering, CAD, AI image workflows, high-resolution media and modern gaming, while maintaining a compact desktop footprint.
  • 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and Flexible Expansion – A pre-installed 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD provides fast access to models, datasets, media libraries and project files. A second M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slot allows additional storage expansion, while the SD 4.0 card reader supports efficient photo and video workflows for creators and production teams.
  • Professional Connectivity and Four-Display Support – Dual USB4 ports, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 support up to four displays and resolutions up to 8K@60Hz. WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and 2.5GbE deliver fast networking for cloud collaboration, NAS access and business deployment. Windows 11 Pro, performance-mode switching, Wake-on-LAN and auto power-on support flexible workstation use.

Include the idle periods that reflect your actual schedule. If the computer remains on between prompts or overnight, measure idle separately rather than applying the higher inference reading to every powered hour. Treat sleep or off as a separate mode if it matters to your estimate.

Convert watts and hours into electricity cost

Watts (W) measure power at a moment; watt-hours (Wh) and kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy used over time. One kWh is 1,000 watts used for one hour. The U.S. Energy Information Administration illustrates the conversion with a 40-watt lamp used for five hours: 200 Wh, or 0.2 kWh. That is a unit example, not a mini PC power estimate. The EIA explains that utilities generally measure electricity in kWh in its electricity-measurement guide.

Use this calculation for each operating mode

  1. Calculate energy for each mode: kWh = average wall watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
  2. Add the kWh for inference, idle, and any relevant sleep or off state.
  3. Multiply the total kWh by the applicable electricity rate: estimated energy cost = kWh × price per kWh.

For time-of-use billing, multiply the energy used in each time period by that period’s rate, then add the costs. A bill’s fixed charges and taxes may affect the total bill, but they are not marginal costs caused by this workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the inputs visible

For a reproducible estimate, record the measured average wall watts (or metered kWh), hours in each state, electricity rate, and the tariff’s region and date. If you do not have a measurement yet, keep the calculation symbolic rather than presenting assumed consumption as typical.

  • Inference energy: W × H ÷ 1,000 kWh, where W is measured average wall watts and H is inference hours.
  • Idle energy: Wi × Hi ÷ 1,000 kWh, where Wi is measured idle watts and Hi is idle hours.
  • Estimated cost: (inference kWh + idle kWh) × your price per kWh.

Choose the electricity rate that applies to you

Use the marginal rate on your own bill or tariff where possible. A national or institutional reference rate may not match your location, household plan, or time of use. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program used 11¢/kWh in computer energy-cost examples as the average price at U.S. federal facilities in July 2024. That dated federal-facility figure is a reference assumption, not a current universal residential rate. See DOE FEMP’s computer purchasing guidance.

Why model benchmarks do not provide a mini PC bill

Local model energy use varies with the model, quantization, generation behavior, runtime, and hardware. A preliminary study dated June 12, 2026, by Zähl, Dalipaj, Hennig, and Bayer evaluated 18 open-source models from 0.5B to 7B parameters on one RTX 4060 Ti 16GB GPU using Ollama, with GPU power sampled at 2 Hz. Its measurements are GPU-focused, not wall-power readings for a mini PC, so they cannot be used directly to calculate a mini PC’s cost. The study is available at arXiv.

Likewise, a processor’s TDP, an adapter’s rated capacity, or a GPU’s power limit is not an observed whole-system reading during your inference workload. The IEC 62623:2022 standard specifies measurement procedures for desktop and notebook computers across power modes and formulas for typical energy consumption over a period, normally annual; it uses a duty-cycle profile and does not set pass/fail criteria. It does not certify a particular mini PC or reproduce a local AI session. See the IEC 62623:2022 publication page.

  • Average whole-system wall watts while generating.
  • Energy per fixed task or prompt set, with comparable workload length and output.
  • Idle watts and the share of powered time spent idle.
  • Throughput or response time alongside energy, so the figures have workload context.
  • The electricity rate and schedule used to turn energy into cost.

There is no defensible universal monthly bill without a specific machine, workload, schedule, and tariff. Nor does an electricity estimate alone show whether local inference is cheaper than an API: that comparison also depends on hardware purchase-cost allocation, usage, service pricing, and equivalent task quality.
