To estimate a streaming PC’s monthly electricity cost, multiply its average power draw at the wall by the hours it runs, then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). For a 30-day month, an always-on PC runs 720 hours. Measure the setup under the workload you actually stream; there is no reliable universal wattage for a YouTube streaming PC.
Use this formula
Monthly energy cost = (average wall power in watts ÷ 1,000) × hours powered × electricity price per kWh. The formula estimates energy charges, not necessarily the entire utility bill. A kilowatt-hour measures energy accumulated over time: a device drawing 1,000 watts for one hour uses 1 kWh. The U.S. Department of Energy-hosted Duke Energy guide describes the kilowatt-hour as “the most common unit for measuring electrical energy usage” (Understanding Your Utility Bill).
For a 30-day period running continuously, use 24 × 30 = 720 hours. For a more precise estimate, use the actual hours in your billing period; months differ in length, and your PC may not run every hour.

Example using your own readings
Suppose a wall measurement shows an average of 150 W and your energy rate is $0.20 per kWh. The calculation is (150 ÷ 1,000) × 720 × $0.20, or $21.60 in energy charges for 30 days. This is an example of the arithmetic, not a claim about typical PC power or electricity rates. Substitute your measured watts and your tariff’s applicable rate.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Measure the power your setup actually uses
Use average power measured at the wall while the PC is doing the work you intend it to do. Power varies with workload, so a brief idle reading may not represent a machine encoding a stream, running a game, or rendering a complex scene. DOE/FEMP recommends measuring fluctuating power over a period and dividing the energy measured by the elapsed time to determine average power (Measuring Standby Power).
- Set up a representative workload. Run the streaming software and the usual game or scene, overlays, resolution, frame rate, and other applications. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends stream settings suited to the available connection; use the settings you expect to run when measuring (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Measure for a representative interval. Use a meter that reports accumulated energy and elapsed time, then divide the energy by the hours measured. If the instrument displays average watts, record that value over a period long enough to include normal workload variation.
- Define what is included. A tower-only reading excludes the monitor, lights, camera, capture hardware, audio equipment, and network gear. To estimate the whole streaming station, measure the devices you want counted together where practical, or measure them separately and add their energy use. YouTube notes that encoder setups can include external audio and video equipment (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).
- Use an optional plug-in electricity monitor if needed. It can help obtain a wall-power reading; DOE/FEMP’s measurement material discusses instrument resolution but does not endorse a consumer model or validate a specific device’s accuracy.
Do not use the power supply’s rated capacity or a component’s advertised maximum as the PC’s average wall draw. Those figures do not tell you how much energy the complete setup consumes during your actual stream. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal wattage or monthly cost for an always-on YouTube streaming PC.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Find the right electricity rate and interpret the result
Check your electricity bill or tariff for the energy price that applies to your account, expressed in currency per kWh. Rates can vary by time of use or season, and bills can also include fixed monthly fees and demand charges. Fixed fees ordinarily do not change because the PC runs; demand charges depend on the account’s rate structure. For time-variable rates, calculate energy use by time period when practical and apply each period’s rate. DOE/FEMP explains these utility-rate distinctions in Evaluating Your Utility Rate Options.

Compare two PCs or operating schedules fairly
For a meaningful comparison, keep the workload and measurement boundary consistent. Compare average wall watts under the same stream settings, include the same devices, use the same hours, and apply the relevant electricity rate. If rates vary with time, account for when each setup runs. No product benchmarks or tested PC comparisons are established here, so measure the specific systems rather than assuming one model’s cost from another’s.
