Estimate ad revenue from the stream’s own YouTube Analytics data, not from a generic CPM. For a matched period, use estimated ad revenue directly, or calculate it from monetized playbacks and a creator-side yield:
Estimated ad revenue = (estimated monetized playbacks ÷ 1,000) × creator revenue per 1,000 monetized playbacks.
If you have ad-only revenue per 1,000 total views instead, use (total views ÷ 1,000) × ad-only revenue per 1,000 total views. The denominator must match the rate. Build low, typical, and high estimates from comparable periods, because a 24/7 schedule does not guarantee that ads will serve or that revenue will remain constant.
Start with the stream’s own YouTube Analytics
The most useful source is the individual stream’s revenue data, filtered to Live, with estimated ad revenue separated from other revenue sources. YouTube says live-stream and live-replay ad revenue can be viewed in Analytics. Use a comparable period and stream, and note the dates covered. Analytics labels and availability can change, so check the current YouTube Studio interface and YouTube’s Understand ad revenue analytics guidance.

Keep the estimate limited to ads. Estimated revenue can include YouTube Premium and fan-funding sources; memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers are not ad revenue. Sponsorships and other off-platform income are also outside an ads-only calculation. YouTube’s revenue analytics definitions explain the distinction.
Two valid calculation routes
- Use estimated ad revenue directly: for a past period, this is the clearest historical ad-income figure available in the relevant report.
- Use monetized playbacks: multiply the number of monetized playbacks by creator revenue per 1,000 monetized playbacks, divided by 1,000.
- Use total views only with an ad-only rate based on total views: multiply total views by ad-only revenue per 1,000 total views, divided by 1,000.
The latter two are practical calculations based on YouTube’s distinct metric definitions; use the report that matches the rate’s denominator. Do not treat CPM as creator take-home revenue or multiply a CPM by total views as if every view generated an ad.

Keep views, monetized playbacks, impressions, CPM, and RPM distinct
These measures answer different questions. A view is not necessarily an ad-supported playback, and an ad impression is not the same thing as a monetized playback.

YouTube explains these definitions in Understand ad revenue analytics. The distinctions matter because some views will not show ads: ad availability, advertiser friendliness, viewer targeting, geography, Premium status, and recent ad exposure can all affect delivery.

Turn historical results into a planning range
A single past result can be misleading. Build three scenarios from several comparable periods, using the same revenue scope and denominator throughout. Where possible, compare periods with similar content, stream hours, viewer geographies, ad settings, and season. State the period behind the estimate and that it assumes a similar audience and ad-serving mix.
- Choose comparable periods. Select multiple time windows from the same stream or closely comparable streams. Avoid mixing a holiday period with ordinary weeks without calling out the difference.
- Calculate a matched yield for each period. For example, divide estimated ad revenue by monetized playbacks and multiply by 1,000 to get creator ad revenue per 1,000 monetized playbacks. Alternatively, divide estimated ad revenue by total views and multiply by 1,000 for an ad-only yield per 1,000 total views.
- Set the scenarios from observed variation. Use a lower observed comparable yield for low, a representative middle result for typical, and a higher comparable yield for high. Apply each only to the matching playback or view forecast.
- Write down the assumptions. Record the date range, audience and content comparability, ad settings, and denominator. Refresh the range as the channel accumulates data.
For a new stream with no relevant Analytics history, there is no channel-specific rate yet. Present a scenario-based estimate as uncertain rather than substituting a universal “YouTube CPM.” YouTube states that earnings are not guaranteed and describes reasons CPM can fluctuate in its YouTube partner earnings overview and analytics guidance.

Check eligibility before projecting income
Revenue estimates matter only if the channel and stream can earn the relevant revenue. The channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program, and the relevant monetization must be enabled. To earn Watch Page ad revenue on long-form or live content, creators must accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube’s partner earnings overview states that the module pays creators 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the Watch Page; the creator’s applicable terms are those in their own YouTube Studio agreements.

Account for live ad settings—and their limits
YouTube says monetized live streams can earn from ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. With live monetization on, pre-roll and display ads can be enabled; mid-rolls can be automatic or manually controlled. YouTube explicitly says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” A stream running continuously therefore does not mean every hour, playback, or ad slot produces ad revenue.
Mid-roll approaches

YouTube’s live-stream help page reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not turned them on. The comparison was averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a YouTube-published comparison, not an independent causal estimate or a promise for an individual stream; audience, format, and ad delivery can differ.
For current live ad controls and details, consult Monetize your live stream. If testing a different setting, compare matched periods and keep content and audience conditions as similar as possible; otherwise a change in revenue cannot confidently be attributed to the ad setting alone.
Keep the content and copyright side of the estimate realistic
Only estimate ad income for content the channel is allowed to monetize. Copyright claims, advertiser suitability, and whether the channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies can affect eligibility and delivery. A stream that stays online is not automatically monetizable, and reused or repetitive material may raise policy questions. Check YouTube’s current Partner Program and monetization guidance before treating projected views as eligible ad-supported views.
Common estimate mistakes
- Multiplying views by CPM: CPM is advertiser cost, not creator take-home revenue, and not every view has an ad. Use an ads-only creator metric with its matching denominator.
- Using broad RPM as ad yield: general RPM can include non-ad revenue and unmonetized views. Isolate estimated ad revenue or use an ad-specific measure.
- Assuming every live slot serves: YouTube says slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Model a range from the stream’s observed history.
- Projecting an old rate indefinitely: shifts in geography, season, viewer mix, advertiser inventory, formats, and monetized playback share can change yield. Refresh the estimate from current Analytics.
- Counting other income as ads: keep Premium, memberships, Supers, sponsorships, and off-platform income separate from ad-only totals.
