One unit on a typical electricity bill is 1 kWh. There is no single India-wide rate or standard wattage for a livestream: your equipment, state, utility, consumer category, usage slab and subsidy determine the result.
Calculate the stream’s electricity use
Use this formula:
Energy (kWh) = average power (watts) × operating hours ÷ 1,000
For continuous operation, the hours are 24 multiplied by the number of days. For a 30-day estimate, that is 720 hours:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
For example, if a complete setup averaged 150 W for 30 days, it would use 150 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 108 kWh. This wattage is hypothetical, not a typical or recommended value for streaming equipment.
Estimate the energy-charge increase
If a flat marginal energy rate applies, multiply the estimated kWh by that rate. If your tariff is slabbed, work out how the added units fall into the applicable slabs instead of multiplying by a headline rate. The result is an estimate of the added energy charge, not necessarily the full increase in your bill.

Find the tariff that applies to your bill
India does not have one retail electricity rate for every household or state. The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of electricity supply in India (2025 compendium) provides state and consumer-category tables, slab rates, subsidy details and tariff effective dates: CEA 2025 tariff compendium. Check your current utility bill and tariff order as well; schedules, subsidies and adjustments can change.
The Ministry of Power states: “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” State governments may also provide subsidies to consumer classes. Your applicable rate can therefore depend on your distribution utility, consumer category, monthly usage, slab and subsidy eligibility. See the Ministry of Power / PIB release of 10 August 2026 for the regulatory context.

Use the Tamil Nadu figure only as a dated illustration
In the Tamil Nadu domestic example in the CEA compendium, energy charges before subsidy include ₹4.80 per unit for several lower slabs and ₹6.45 per unit for the 201–250 unit slab. The table gives a tariff effective date of 1 July 2024 and also displays different subsidy-adjusted rates. These figures illustrate how slabs and subsidies matter; they are not a current rate for every Tamil Nadu customer or a rate to apply across India.
Separate energy charges from the total bill
A bill increase may include more than energy charges. Depending on your supply and tariff, fixed or demand charges, electricity duty, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, subsidies and other listed charges may affect the total. Use the current tariff order and bill to determine which charges change when consumption rises. The Ministry release discusses fixed-cost recovery; the CEA tables distinguish charges and subsidy treatment.

Measure the equipment that will stay on
A stream’s power use depends on the actual setup and workload. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, among other stream hardware, but its documentation does not give a general wattage for a 24/7 stream. Encoder settings such as resolution, frame rate and bitrate describe the video and network configuration; bitrate is not a measure of electrical power. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
Include the whole continuously powered setup
- Count the computer or hardware encoder.
- Add any display, router, camera, lights, capture equipment and audio gear that must remain powered for the stream.
- Distinguish equipment that would already be on from power genuinely added by streaming if you want the incremental cost.
A plug-in electricity usage meter, also called an energy monitor with a kWh display, is an optional way to observe one device’s consumption. A single meter will not capture other devices in a multi-device setup unless they are included in its measurement. Measure safely and note whether you recorded instantaneous watts or energy accumulated over a known period. A short reading may not capture changing processor load or idle periods, so treat it as an estimate.

Turn the measurement into a monthly cost
- Measure or establish average watts. Measure the included equipment during representative streaming conditions, or use equipment specifications cautiously. Record which devices are included.
- Calculate the operating hours. For a 24/7 stream, multiply 24 by the days in your billing period. A 31-day period is 744 hours; a 28-day period is 672 hours.
- Convert to kWh. Multiply average watts by those hours and divide by 1,000.
- Apply your marginal tariff. Use the correct utility, category, slab and applicable subsidy for the added units. Add other bill charges only as specified by your current tariff.
If comparing two setups, make the comparison like-for-like: use average watts for the entire included rig, the same measurement period, and each setup’s relevant tariff assumptions. Do not compare a computer-only reading with a figure that includes a router, display and other equipment.
