EEPROM is erased electrically, but there is no universal erase procedure: the supported operation, scope, voltage and command sequence depend on the exact chip. Read its full marking, identify the manufacturer and part number, then follow that device’s datasheet and programming specification. A byte write may erase the old value automatically on some parts; other devices offer explicit byte, page, row or full-array erase operations.
Identify the chip before choosing an erase method
Do not infer the part from its package shape or use a procedure for a similar-looking device. Read the complete marking and use it to locate the exact manufacturer documentation. Microchip’s Data EEPROM Memory material, for example, describes a representative device in which writing a byte automatically erases the selected location before writing new data. That behavior is not universal.
In the exact part’s datasheet and programming specification, check:
- Whether the operation is a direct erase or an erase that happens as part of writing.
- Its scope: a byte, page, row or the full data array.
- The required interface, voltage range and programming equipment.
- How completion is indicated and whether the result can be verified.
- Whether the operation affects only data EEPROM or also other memory or configuration areas.
Microchip documents differing operations for different device families in its Memory Programming Specifications and dsPIC30F Flash Programming Specification. These are examples, not instructions for an unidentified chip.

Back up data and account for how the chip is installed
Erasing is destructive to stored values. If the contents may matter, read and save them before proceeding, using a method supported by the device and the board it is installed on.
If the EEPROM is soldered into a circuit, determine whether it can be programmed in-circuit or must be removed. Do not connect an external programmer just because its connector appears to fit: check the target’s voltage and interface requirements, pinout, and possible interaction with the rest of the board first.

Choose a compatible programmer only if needed
Search for an EEPROM programmer only after identifying the exact chip. Confirm that the manufacturer’s supported-device list includes the full part number and package, and check whether the setup needs a particular adapter, pinout or voltage. Compatibility with “EEPROM” generally is not enough to establish compatibility with a particular device. No specific programmer model is established here.
EEPROM is not UV EPROM
Do not use sunlight or a UV eraser to clear EEPROM. UV-erasable EPROM is a different memory technology; Microchip’s 33023A reference manual describes UV EPROM erasure in terms of ultraviolet wavelength and intensity, distance from the source, and process technology. EEPROM is electrically erased, using the operation specified for the exact device.

Device-specific figures are not universal erase guarantees
One Microchip device-family memory programming specification lists 100,000 erase/write cycles for data EEPROM and characteristic retention of 40 years at 55°C. It also lists typical times of 4 ms for a full EEPROM erase and 2 ms for byte/page erase and write operations. These values apply to that documented family and its stated conditions; they should not be assumed for other EEPROMs. A separate Microchip device-family page reports 100,000 erase/write cycles and characteristic 40-year retention under its own environmental conditions, which likewise should not be generalized to other products.
