For a compact Tamil-song library, encode source files at a sensible audio bitrate, then configure the live encoder separately to meet YouTube’s live-ingest requirements. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3, constant bitrate (CBR), 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 kbps stereo audio for an RTMP/RTMPS live stream. Smaller source files save storage; they do not change the live audio settings YouTube recommends.
Before encoding anything, confirm that you have the rights to broadcast every recording and composition live on your channel. File compression cannot solve copyright or monetization restrictions.
Separate library encoding from live-stream encoding
Think of this as two jobs with different goals:
- Library encoding: reduce the size of the audio files you store and play in your playlist while retaining sound quality acceptable for your listeners.
- Live ingest encoding: send YouTube a compliant live feed. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current live guidance lists AAC or MP3, recommends CBR, and specifies 128 kbps stereo audio at 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Do not substitute YouTube’s upload recommendations for its live requirements. The upload guide discusses a different workflow; for RTMP/RTMPS live audio, use the live guide’s AAC or MP3 options rather than assuming Opus is supported just because it appears in upload guidance. Lowering a file’s bitrate reduces its size, but there is no established Tamil-specific bitrate threshold that guarantees a particular sound quality. Tamil is a language and repertoire, not an encoding parameter: the right choice depends on the source recording, arrangement, and what your listeners expect. Compare representative songs—including dense percussion, vocals, and quieter passages—before applying one preset to your whole library.

Approximate storage per hour
Using decimal megabytes and ignoring small container overhead, bitrate arithmetic gives these approximate audio-only sizes:

These are calculations from bitrate multiplied by duration, not published listening-test results. FFmpeg documents audio bitrate options in bits per second; see FFmpeg’s documentation.
Avoid unnecessary lossy re-encoding
If a song is already in a lossy format, converting it to another lossy format can reduce quality again without recovering detail. Keep a higher-quality original when practical, and audition the actual files you plan to use. Treat the smaller preset as a storage trade-off, not an automatic improvement.

Set the live feed for YouTube
Audio settings
- Codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS live ingest.
- Rate control: CBR, as recommended by YouTube.
- Channels and sample rate: stereo at 44.1 kHz is YouTube’s live-guide recommendation. YouTube’s stream-health guidance also identifies 44.1 and 48 kHz as recommended sample rates.
- Bitrate: 128 kbps stereo, YouTube’s recommended live audio bitrate. This live target is separate from the bitrate of your stored song files.
YouTube’s guidance is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that any particular encoder build or connection will behave correctly. Check the stream-health diagnostics after starting a test feed; the API documentation identifies audio bitrate, sample-rate, and codec issues among its diagnostics. Keep the visual modest
A music stream with a still or slowly changing image usually does not need a high-motion, high-resolution video feed. YouTube lists a recommended 4 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 at both 480p30 and 360p30, with a 0.4 Mbps minimum for 360p30. Use the guidance for the resolution and frame rate you actually select, and test sustained upload stability rather than treating a published bitrate as proof that your connection is sufficient. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for viewers, so you do not need to send separate pre-encoded resolutions just to provide those platform playback variants. The detailed live settings are in YouTube’s live encoder guide.

Prepare the playlist and start a test stream
- Check rights first. Confirm live-broadcast permission for the composition and the sound recording, and make sure any required channel allowlisting is in place.
- Make a representative test playlist. Include the kinds of recordings your channel will actually play. Listen for artifacts after encoding, especially on vocals, cymbals, percussion, and quiet sections.
- Configure the live encoder independently. Select AAC or MP3, CBR, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 kbps stereo audio; choose a modest video resolution and the corresponding YouTube live settings.
- Protect the stream key. Enter it through the encoder’s private settings or secret-management mechanism. Do not place it in a public script, shared configuration, or log.
- Run a short test and inspect stream health. Check YouTube’s diagnostics for audio codec, bitrate, and sample-rate problems, and verify that your sustained upload can carry the complete stream.
- Monitor the continuous run. Have a way to detect a stopped encoder or dropped connection and restart or reconnect it. Do not assume a process will remain healthy indefinitely.
FFmpeg supports bitrate configuration and several audio encoders, but the encoder available in a given build does not determine what YouTube accepts for live RTMP/RTMPS. Choose a codec from YouTube’s live guidance and express FFmpeg bitrate values in bits per second. Adapt any command to your playlist, visual loop, installed encoder build, and stream-key handling; do not expose a real key in a command that might be shared or logged. Plan around archiving and continuous operation
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive as backup, and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining a complete recording matters, make your own local recording or plan suitable broadcast segments. YouTube makes the provider responsible for having the necessary rights to exploit live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other participants. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; a channel that has a licence may still need the rights owner to add the channel to an allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright information and its live-stream copyright guidance before going live.

Creator Music is not a shortcut for a live music feed: YouTube says its tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams. Also distinguish permission to use music from eligibility to monetize. YouTube’s monetization policies can exclude highly repetitive or mass-produced material; its examples include collections of songs from different artists even when the uploader has permission. Check YouTube’s Creator Music guidance and YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
