If your YouTube channel uses a school-issued Google Workspace for Education account, first check whether the school has designated the account holder as under 18. Google lists live-stream creation as unavailable to K–12 users designated under 18; a webcam, encoder, or change to viewing permissions will not remove that restriction. If you are 18 or older but the account is incorrectly marked under 18, ask the school administrator to correct the designation. Once eligible, you must also meet YouTube’s channel requirements before going live.
Check whether the school account is allowed to create live streams
A school-issued Google Workspace for Education account is managed by the school. The administrator controls relevant account settings, and the account’s age designation matters. Google’s guidance says that users designated under 18 at K–12 institutions cannot create YouTube live streams. The age-based change took effect September 1, 2021, according to YouTube’s school-account instructions. YouTube’s guidance for school accounts explains what to do if an adult is marked under 18.
If you are 18 or older but marked under 18
- Contact your school administrator and ask them to update the account’s age designation to over 18.
- After the administrator makes the change, sign in to YouTube with the school account.
- Create a YouTube channel if YouTube prompts you to do so.
Correcting the designation is not the same as changing a YouTube viewing permission. The administrator must handle the account’s age designation.

If you are under 18 in a K–12 school account
The documented restriction applies: the account cannot create live streams. The available school-account guidance does not describe an administrator switch that enables live-stream creation for an under-18 K–12 user. Do not assume that buying equipment, using an encoder, or changing a viewing-access setting will make the account eligible.

Meet YouTube’s separate live-stream requirements
Passing the school-account check does not automatically make a channel eligible. YouTube Help says a channel needs to be verified, must have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. These are requirements in addition to any school-account controls. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Minimum age: 16 to live stream.
- Channel verification: Verify the YouTube channel before attempting to go live.
- Restriction history: The channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days.
YouTube Help states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.”

Start a live stream after the account is eligible
- Sign in to YouTube using the eligible account and open YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Go Live.
- Choose an available method: webcam, mobile, encoder, or console where supported.
- Follow the prompts for the method you chose and set up the broadcast in YouTube.
Choose the streaming method for the production
- Webcam: A straightforward choice for broadcasting from a computer without a more involved production setup.
- Mobile: Use this for phone-based broadcasting when the option is available to your account.
- Encoder: Better suited to gameplay or a production involving overlays or external audio/video equipment.
- Console: Use console-native streaming where supported.
These are production choices, not eligibility workarounds. A different method does not change the school account’s age designation or YouTube’s channel requirements.
Why “Unrestricted YouTube access” is not the fix
Google documents the Admin console setting “Unrestricted YouTube access” as a viewing-access control. Its documentation does not say that it overrides the under-18 K–12 restriction on creating live streams. Ask the administrator about the age designation and account eligibility rather than treating unrestricted viewing as a live-streaming permission. See Google’s Admin console guidance on YouTube access.

Troubleshoot when Go Live is unavailable
| What you see | What to check or do |
|---|---|
| You are on a school-issued account and cannot create a live stream | Ask the administrator whether the account is a Workspace for Education account and whether it is designated under 18. K–12 users designated under 18 cannot create live streams under Google’s published guidance. |
| You are 18 or older, but the school account is marked under 18 | Ask the school administrator to correct the age designation. Then sign in again and create a channel if YouTube prompts you. |
| The account is eligible, but the channel still cannot go live | Check that the channel is verified, the streamer is at least 16, and the channel has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. |
| You are considering changing unrestricted viewing or buying streaming equipment | Neither is documented as a way to override the school-account age restriction. Resolve account eligibility first. |
