WhatsApp voice message transcripts turn a received voice message into text. To enable them, open Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts, switch the feature on, and choose a language. Then long-press a voice message in a chat and tap “transcribe.”
Turn on voice message transcripts
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts.
- Turn on voice message transcripts and select the language you want WhatsApp to use.
WhatsApp’s November 21, 2024 announcement gave this settings path. Menu labels or placement may differ after app updates, and the announcement did not give separate current steps for iOS, Android, Web, or desktop.
Transcribe a voice message
- Open the conversation containing the voice message.
- Long-press the voice message and tap “transcribe.”
- Wait a moment for the text to appear.
The feature transcribes a voice message you receive; it does not send or schedule a message. WhatsApp says transcripts are generated on your device: “Transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages.” This is WhatsApp’s statement, not an independent security audit. Language availability and rollout
WhatsApp announced a phased global rollout beginning with a few selected languages, with more planned over the following months. HotHardware reported that English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian were supported at launch on November 22, 2024. That is a launch-era list, not a verified list of languages available in October 2026. Check the language selector in your app or WhatsApp’s current Help Center for current options. The launch announcement does not establish present-day eligibility by account, operating system, app version, or region, so availability may vary.

Fix “Transcript unavailable”
HotHardware reported three possible causes of an unavailable transcript:
- The selected transcript language does not match the language spoken in the recording.
- Background noise makes the words difficult to recognize.
- The voice message is in a language the feature does not support.
Try selecting the language that matches the recording and transcribing again. A transcript can also misrecognize words even when it appears; listen to the original before relying on exact wording, especially when accuracy matters. A transcript can be convenient when listening is impractical, but it is not a dependable substitute for the recording.
