Tap to Wake is enabled in your phone’s settings, but Android does not use one universal menu path: the option and gesture depend on the manufacturer, model, and software version. Use the instructions for your phone below. The gesture wakes the screen; it does not necessarily unlock the device.
How do I turn on Tap to Wake on Android?
Start with the path for your phone’s manufacturer. If the labels differ, search Settings for “tap to wake,” “wake display,” “motions and gestures,” or “screen off gestures.” These search terms may help you find the option if your device offers it; they are not available on every Android phone.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features, then Motions and gestures.
- Turn on Double tap to turn on screen.
Samsung says the screen turns on when you double-tap it. The separate Double tap to turn off screen option turns the screen off when you double-tap an empty area of the Home or Lock screen. Samsung notes that motions and gestures can vary by model or software version. Samsung Support: Use motions and gestures on your Galaxy phone; Samsung Support: Use the double-tap gesture.
Motorola
- Open Settings.
- Tap Gestures.
- Adjust the options under Wake display.
The cited Motorola guide is for Android 13 and describes wake options that can respond to a tap or to moving the phone. Motorola also documents a separate double-tap gesture that goes to the lock screen; it is not the same as the Wake display options. Follow the guide for your exact model and software. OnePlus 7
- Open Settings.
- Tap Buttons & gestures, then Quick gestures.
- Open Screen off gestures and enable Double tap to wake.
The English OnePlus 7 User Manual describes this feature as tapping the screen twice to wake the device. This is guidance for the OnePlus 7; the path may not apply to other OnePlus models. OnePlus 7 User Manual.
Google Pixel and other Android phones
The cited Google Pixel gesture page does not establish a Tap to Wake setting path. That alone does not prove the feature is either available or unavailable on a particular Pixel. Check Settings on your model and consult Google’s support instructions for that device and software version. Google Pixel Help: Get around on your Pixel phone.

What if the setting is missing?
- Search Settings using the terms “tap to wake,” “wake display,” “motions and gestures,” and “screen off gestures.”
- Check the support page or user manual for your exact model and software version; menu names and available gestures can differ.
- Do not assume that a setting described for one model exists on another, even when both use Android or share a manufacturer.
Tap to Wake versus double-tap to turn off
Waking the display and turning it off are separate actions when both are offered. For example, Samsung lists separate controls for double-tapping to turn on the screen and double-tapping an empty area on the Home or Lock screen to turn it off. A wake gesture turns on the display; unlocking may still require your usual authentication or screen-lock action.
