To turn on RCS on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, open Google Messages, tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Messages settings > RCS chats and switch on RCS chats. Wait for phone-number verification, then confirm the status says Connected.
Enable RCS in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages on your Galaxy S22 Ultra.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Tap Messages settings, then RCS chats. If the menu uses an older label, look for Chat features.
- Turn on RCS chats and let Google verify your phone number.
- Return to the RCS chats screen and check the status. Connected means RCS is ready for chats with other people who also have RCS enabled.
Google says that when RCS chats are enabled, you can send messages over Wi-Fi and use other features. See Google’s RCS setup and status guidance.
Google Messages and Samsung Messages use different controls
These instructions apply to Google Messages. Google says its Messages app offers RCS on Samsung phones. If you use Samsung Messages instead, its RCS availability depends on carrier support and may not work across carriers or include every feature. The settings in one app do not control RCS in the other.
Samsung’s U.S. guidance recommends Google Messages for RCS support across carriers in the United States; that is not a guarantee for every country, plan, or device configuration. AT&T also provides a Galaxy S22 Ultra-specific guide to adjusting RCS chat settings, but its instructions are carrier-specific.

What the RCS status means
- Connected: RCS is available for conversations when the other person, or every member of a group chat, also has RCS enabled.
- Connecting: Google is verifying your phone number. Allow the process to finish.
- Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry: Verification has encountered a problem. Check connectivity and SMS reception, then follow any retry option shown.
- Not supported: RCS is unavailable in the current setup. Check the internet connection and whether your carrier supports RCS.

Fix RCS if you cannot turn it on
Check the default messaging app and connections
- Make Google Messages the phone’s default SMS app.
- Confirm the phone has an internet connection and can receive SMS messages; phone-number verification relies on these working.
- Update Google Messages and Google Play services, and check that Android is up to date. Google lists Android 5.0 or later as a requirement for RCS chats.
Check carrier support and retry verification
Open Messages settings > RCS chats and read the status. If it says the carrier has disabled RCS, contact your carrier. Once the carrier resolves the issue, use Retry if the option appears. If number verification remains unresolved for more than 30 minutes, Google says to open Details and submit feedback.

Follow the steps on Google’s “Can’t turn on RCS chats” page. Status messages are troubleshooting clues; they do not by themselves show that the phone is defective.
What to expect when RCS is unavailable
RCS availability varies by region and carrier, and a conversation can use RCS only when the other participant—or all group members—also has it enabled. In Google Messages, SMS or MMS remains an option when RCS is unavailable. The RCS chats settings let you choose whether messages should automatically resend as text. Google’s RCS FAQ explains availability and fallback.

Turning RCS on is a settings task; Google’s documented setup does not call for a special accessory or paid subscription. Avoid repeatedly switching RCS on and off: Google warns that doing so can remove you from group chats. It recommends turning RCS off for specific situations such as changing devices or messaging apps, or losing access to the phone while keeping the number.
