To enable or disable AMD CPU virtualization, change SVM Mode in your PC’s UEFI/BIOS. Windows 11 provides a way to restart into firmware settings, but it does not have one general Windows toggle for SVM. Many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled, so check its current state and your device maker’s guidance before changing anything.
Before you change SVM Mode
SVM Mode is a firmware setting for AMD CPU virtualization. Its name and location depend on the PC or motherboard, so identify your device’s manufacturer and model and consult the maker’s current support instructions. Microsoft cautions that firmware menus vary and advises changing only what is needed, since other UEFI/BIOS changes might prevent access to Windows.
Open UEFI/BIOS from Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Beside Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Settings > Restart.
The firmware utility may be called BIOS rather than UEFI. If you do not see the listed option or the interface differs, follow the instructions for your specific device rather than guessing at other settings. Microsoft’s virtualization guidance explains this route and notes that firmware interfaces vary by manufacturer.
Enable or disable SVM Mode
In firmware, find SVM Mode or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Choose Enabled to turn on CPU virtualization, or Disabled to turn it off. ASUS’s AMD 800 Series BIOS manual describes SVM Mode as the CPU virtualization control and notes that available menu items can vary with the installed CPU.

Menu paths and save controls are manufacturer-specific. For example, MSI’s guide for the systems it covers places the setting at Advanced > SVM Mode and uses F10 to save and exit. That 2020 guide is an example, not a universal path or key. Use your firmware’s on-screen instructions to save the change and exit.
Check whether Windows also needs a virtualization feature
Changing SVM Mode in firmware is separate from enabling a Windows feature. If an application still requires setup, check its own requirements. Microsoft documents Virtual Machine Platform as a separate option in Turn Windows features on or off; this step might apply to a PC upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It does not replace enabling SVM Mode in firmware, and the application determines whether it is needed.
