Windows 11 does not provide a Bluetooth Absolute Volume switch in Settings > Bluetooth & devices or Settings > System > Sound. The control is a machine-wide registry value called DisableAbsoluteVolume.
Absolute Volume synchronizes Windows’ volume slider with the volume stored by a compatible Bluetooth headset or speaker. Disabling it gives Windows and the Bluetooth device separate volume controls, which can help when one control stops responding or the volume range is inconvenient.
What Bluetooth Absolute Volume does
With Absolute Volume enabled, changing the Windows volume normally changes the Bluetooth device’s volume at the same time. The two controls behave as one.
When Absolute Volume is disabled, Windows and the headset or speaker can use independent levels. For example, you can set the speaker’s physical volume high and then make smaller adjustments with the Windows taskbar slider.

This setting is not a universal Bluetooth audio fix. It will not repair an outdated driver, an incorrectly selected output device, a pairing problem, or a device that lacks the required audio support.
Before changing the setting
- Close apps that are playing audio.
- Have administrator access available. The setting is under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, so it applies to the computer rather than only your user account. - If you plan to use Registry Editor, back up the registry first. Microsoft warns that an incorrect registry change can cause serious problems.
Disable Bluetooth Absolute Volume with Command Prompt
- Open Start and search for
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- At the elevated Command Prompt, run this exact command:
reg add HKLMSYSTEMControlSet001ControlBluetoothAudioAVRCPCT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /fThe value 1 disables Absolute Volume. The command creates the required registry value if it does not already exist, or replaces its current data.
- Close Command Prompt and test the Bluetooth device. If the two volume controls still move together, restart Windows and test again.
After disabling the feature, adjust the device’s own volume first, then use the Windows volume slider for finer control. The exact behavior depends on the headset or speaker.
Enable Bluetooth Absolute Volume again
To restore synchronized volume control, open an elevated Command Prompt using the same steps and run:

reg add HKLMSYSTEMControlSet001ControlBluetoothAudioAVRCPCT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fHere, 0 enables Absolute Volume. Restart Windows if the change is not applied immediately.
Change the value in Registry Editor
You can make the same change without using a command. This method requires more care because selecting or editing the wrong registry value can affect Windows.
- Search Start for
regedit. - Right-click Registry Editor and choose Run as administrator.
- In the address bar, paste this path and press Enter:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlBluetoothAudioAVRCPCT- In the right pane, find
DisableAbsoluteVolume. If it is missing, right-click an empty area, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it exactlyDisableAbsoluteVolume. - Double-click the value and enter one of these data values:

- Click OK, close Registry Editor, and restart Windows if necessary.
Do not create a similarly named value in a different registry location. The relevant path is the one shown above, and the name is negative: setting DisableAbsoluteVolume to 1 disables the feature.
Check whether the change solved the problem
- Reconnect the headset or speaker.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Choose your output device, select the Bluetooth device.
- Play audio and test both the Windows volume control and the device’s own controls.
You can also select the taskbar Sound icon and verify that the Bluetooth device is the selected output. A connected device can appear silent simply because Windows is sending audio to a different output.

If Bluetooth volume still does not work
Restart Bluetooth
Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Reconnect the audio device and test again.
Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter
Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Bluetooth and select Run.
Update the Bluetooth adapter driver
- Open Start and search for Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter. Its name may include radio.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause connection, audio, and volume failures independently of Absolute Volume, particularly after a Windows upgrade or update.
Remove and pair the device again
- Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the headset or speaker, select More options, choose Remove device, and select Yes.
- Put the device into pairing mode and add it again from Bluetooth settings.
Check audio protocol and newer Bluetooth features
Higher-quality Bluetooth audio streaming requires the device to support A2DP. A2DP support is separate from the DisableAbsoluteVolume registry value, so changing Absolute Volume cannot add a missing audio profile.

Bluetooth LE Audio is also separate. On supported systems, stereo playback while the microphone is active requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, compatible factory-integrated Bluetooth LE hardware, suitable manufacturer drivers, and a Bluetooth LE Audio peripheral. Microsoft’s current documentation specifies build 26100.4484 or newer for the enhanced stereo-while-microphone-active behavior.
Which setting should you use?

FAQ
Is there a Bluetooth Absolute Volume setting in Windows 11 Settings?
No. Windows 11 does not expose a toggle with that name in Settings. Use the registry value HKLMSYSTEMControlSet001ControlBluetoothAudioAVRCPCTDisableAbsoluteVolume instead.
Does setting DisableAbsoluteVolume to 1 enable or disable the feature?
It disables Absolute Volume. Because the value name is negative, 1 disables the feature and 0 enables it.
Do I need Windows Terminal?
No. Microsoft’s documented procedure uses an elevated Command Prompt. The same reg add command also works in an elevated Windows Terminal session.

Why did the registry change appear to do nothing?
Restart Windows, reconnect the Bluetooth device, and test again. Also confirm that the Bluetooth device is selected under Settings > System > Sound > Choose your output device.
Does disabling Absolute Volume fix every Bluetooth audio problem?
No. Driver incompatibility, incorrect output selection, pairing failures, missing A2DP support, and LE Audio limitations have different causes and require different fixes.
The Bottom Line
To disable synchronized Bluetooth volume in Windows 11, run the following command in an administrator Command Prompt:
