To enable Roblox mouse lock on a desktop computer, join an experience, open the Roblox menu in the upper-left corner, select Settings, turn on Shift Lock Switch, return to the game, and press Shift. Press Shift again to turn mouse lock off.
Roblox calls this player-facing feature Shift Lock Switch. It is an in-experience setting, so you will not find it on the general Roblox home page.
How to turn on mouse lock in Roblox
- Open Roblox and join an experience. You must be inside a game to access the relevant setting.
- Open the Roblox menu. Select the Roblox icon or menu button in the upper-left corner of the experience window.
- Choose Settings.
- Enable Shift Lock Switch. Find Shift Lock Switch and set it to On. This option allows you to change camera modes with the keyboard’s Shift key.
- Return to gameplay. Close the menu or use the control that returns you to the experience.
- Press Shift once. This toggles mouse lock on. Press Shift again to disable it.
When it is active, the cursor is generally centered on the screen, mouse movement can rotate the camera, and your character moves in relation to the camera’s current rotation. The exact indicator can vary between the Roblox client and individual experiences, so check the camera and character movement rather than relying only on an icon.

Mouse lock, commonly called Shift Lock in Roblox, is a camera-and-movement mode. It is different from simply holding the right mouse button and dragging.

- Right-button camera control: In the classic camera mode, you can hold the right mouse button and drag to adjust the avatar’s viewpoint.
- Shift Lock: You toggle the mode with Shift. The cursor is locked toward the center, mouse movement rotates the camera, and the avatar’s movement is interpreted relative to the camera’s rotation.
This can make third-person movement and camera aiming easier, particularly in experiences where you need to move while looking in a different direction.
If “Shift Lock Switch” is missing
Not every Roblox experience supports the feature in the same way. An experience developer can lock the camera mode or use a custom camera system. If the setting is unavailable, disabled, or has no visible effect, the limitation may belong to that experience rather than your Roblox installation.
Try the following:
- Confirm that you are inside an experience, not just browsing the Roblox website.
- Open the in-experience menu and check Settings for Shift Lock Switch.
- If the option appears, turn it on and press the left or right Shift key once.
- Test another experience that uses Roblox’s default camera behavior.
- Check whether the current experience has a custom camera, custom movement system, or another action assigned to Shift, such as sprinting.
- Test the Shift key in another application. If it fails there too, the issue is probably keyboard-related rather than a Roblox camera setting.
Community reports have described conflicts involving custom experience scripts and the Click to Move movement mode. These reports are useful troubleshooting clues, not a universal Roblox rule; the experience’s own controls can differ.

Mouse lock is not the same as first-person mode
First-person camera mode is a separate camera configuration. In first person, Roblox may already capture the mouse and turn the camera as you move it, so you may not see the third-person, shoulder-style behavior associated with Shift Lock.
If Shift Lock seems ineffective, check the experience’s camera setting and test the feature in a normal third-person experience. A first-person experience may be working as designed even if it does not show the familiar Shift Lock view.
Desktop, mobile, and console support
The documented activation procedure is keyboard-based because it requires pressing Shift. It is therefore most directly applicable to Roblox on a desktop or laptop with a physical keyboard.

Do not assume that the same built-in switch is available or behaves identically on phones, tablets, or consoles. Controls and camera behavior can vary by device and experience. On those platforms, open the experience’s Help menu for the current keyboard, mouse, controller, or mobile-gesture instructions.

If you use a physical keyboard with a mobile device or tablet, the presence of a Shift key still does not guarantee that the experience exposes or supports the desktop Shift Lock behavior.
What to do if the Shift key does not respond
Roblox does not require a special gaming keyboard to enable mouse lock. If your existing keyboard works, buying new hardware will not make the software setting appear. First test Shift outside Roblox and check the setting in another experience.

If the key does not respond in Roblox or other applications, you can test with another USB keyboard. This is a troubleshooting accessory, not a Roblox-specific requirement. If a second keyboard works, inspect the original keyboard’s key, connection, or device settings.
Creator notes: enabling or replacing the built-in behavior
For Roblox creators, the relevant default property is StarterPlayer.EnableMouseLockOption. This property determines whether players can toggle mouse lock by default and sets the corresponding player property.
A creator’s camera or input scripts can still change how the feature behaves in an experience. A custom camera, a custom movement system, or a Shift-key action may override or interfere with the player’s expected result.
Roblox’s creator documentation also indicates that shift-lock-related APIs are being deprecated and recommends UserInputService.MouseBehavior for custom implementations. The MouseBehavior enumeration includes LockCenter, which centers the mouse cursor.

UserInputService.MouseBehavior = Enum.MouseBehavior.LockCenterThis scripted approach is not the same as asking players to enable the built-in Shift Lock Switch. Use the built-in option when you want Roblox’s player-facing toggle; use a custom UserInputService-based system when your experience needs its own camera or input behavior.
Fast troubleshooting checklist
- Join an experience before looking for the setting.
- Open the upper-left Roblox menu and select Settings.
- Turn on Shift Lock Switch.
- Return to the game and press the left or right Shift key.
- Test both the camera and character movement.
- Try another experience using the default Roblox camera.
- Check for custom camera controls, custom movement, or a Shift-key action such as sprinting.
- Test the keyboard’s Shift key outside Roblox.
- If the feature remains unavailable across multiple experiences, contact Roblox Support rather than installing third-party scripts or PC-cleanup utilities.
