To enable hardware virtualization, turn on the processor’s virtualization setting in your PC’s UEFI/BIOS firmware. On Windows 10 or 11, first check Task Manager: many PCs already have it enabled. If it is off, use Windows Recovery to open firmware settings, enable the appropriate Intel VT-x or AMD virtualization option, save, and restart. If your goal is to use Hyper-V or Virtual Machine Platform, you may also need to enable a separate Windows feature.

What hardware virtualization does—and what it does not do

Hardware virtualization is a processor capability that lets compatible software run virtual machines or other virtualization-based workloads. The firmware setting exposes that capability to software; it does not install a virtual machine app or automatically turn on every Windows virtualization feature.

Enabling it does not guarantee a fixed performance increase. The official setup and requirements guidance cited here does not promise a speed gain from changing this setting alone. The right next step depends on the software you intend to run.

Check whether virtualization is already enabled

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance, then CPU.
  3. Find the Virtualization status. If it says Enabled, the firmware setting is already on.

Intel notes that an Enabled status can coexist with another hypervisor currently using the feature; it is not necessarily an error. If a particular application still reports a problem, check that application’s requirements and the Windows components it needs before changing more settings. Intel explains how to interpret the virtualization status.

Enable virtualization in UEFI/BIOS on Windows 10 or 11

Before you change firmware settings

Identify your PC or motherboard make and model, then consult its manufacturer’s instructions. Firmware menus and setting names differ, and some manufacturers hide or restrict options. Microsoft cautions: “Only change what you need to in the UEFI (or BIOS). Adjusting other settings might prevent you from accessing Windows.” It also notes that many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled. Microsoft’s Windows virtualization guide provides the Recovery route and directs users to device-maker instructions.

Open firmware settings from Windows

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
  3. In the Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Settings > Restart. Your device may call the firmware interface BIOS rather than UEFI.

Turn on the processor option and save

In firmware, look for the processor virtualization setting. Intel systems may label it Intel Virtualization Technology or VT-x; AMD systems may use AMD-V or SVM. The wording and menu location depend on the device, so use the maker’s documentation rather than assuming a universal key or path.

Enable only the relevant option, then use the firmware’s save-changes and exit command. Windows should restart. Return to Task Manager > Performance > CPU and check that Virtualization reports Enabled.

Enable the Windows feature your software needs

Firmware virtualization and Windows virtualization components are separate. For workflows that require Virtual Machine Platform, open Start, search for Turn Windows features on or off, open that control, select Virtual Machine Platform, and confirm. Restart if Windows asks you to. Other applications may have their own host requirements; follow the app’s instructions rather than enabling unrelated components.

Check Hyper-V requirements

Hyper-V needs more than a firmware toggle. Microsoft lists Windows 10/11 Professional or Enterprise, a 64-bit CPU with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), VM Monitor Mode extensions, firmware-enabled hardware virtualization, and hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP). Microsoft advises planning for at least 4 GB of RAM, with additional memory preferable for the host and virtual machines running at the same time. This is Hyper-V guidance, not a universal minimum for processor virtualization. See Microsoft’s Hyper-V system requirements.

To check the Hyper-V requirements reported by Windows, run systeminfo.exe in Command Prompt or PowerShell and review the Hyper-V Requirements section. Microsoft says all listed requirements must report Yes for the system to run the Hyper-V role. If a requirement is not met, use the result to identify what is missing instead of assuming that enabling VT-x or AMD-V alone will resolve it.

If the option is missing or an app still cannot use virtualization

  • No firmware option is visible: confirm the exact processor and PC or motherboard model. Intel VT-x requires support from both the processor and BIOS; check the processor specification and ask the device or motherboard maker if the setting is absent. Laptop manufacturers may limit available firmware controls. Intel’s support guidance covers checking processor support and contacting the vendor.
  • Task Manager says Enabled, but the app complains: another hypervisor may be using the feature, or the app may require a separate Windows component or additional hardware and OS capabilities. Check the app’s specific requirements.
  • Hyper-V cannot start: verify the Windows edition and inspect each item in the systeminfo.exe Hyper-V Requirements section, including SLAT, VM Monitor Mode extensions, DEP, and memory.
  • You cannot find UEFI Settings in Recovery: firmware and Recovery options vary by device. Use the manufacturer’s documentation or support rather than trying a generic startup key or changing unrelated firmware settings.
