To enable Dynamic Lock in Windows 11, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, find Dynamic lock under Additional settings, and turn it on. Pair your phone with the PC over Bluetooth first; Windows can then lock the PC when the phone moves out of Bluetooth range.
What Dynamic Lock does
Dynamic Lock uses a paired phone’s Bluetooth signal to estimate when you are no longer nearby. When that signal drops below the level Windows treats as out of range, the PC locks. Microsoft says this happens within a minute after the phone is out of Bluetooth range; it is not an instantaneous lock or a universal distance guarantee.
What you need before turning it on
- A Windows PC with working Bluetooth, switched on.
- A phone that can be paired with the PC over Bluetooth and is available to take with you when you step away.
Most Windows devices have Bluetooth built in. If your PC does not, Microsoft says you can add Bluetooth with a USB Bluetooth adapter; you do not need one if the PC already supports Bluetooth. Microsoft’s Bluetooth guidance explains pairing. The Dynamic Lock documentation does not specify a phone operating-system version or list device-specific compatibility.
Set up Dynamic Lock
- Open the sign-in settings. Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Microsoft notes that some settings’ availability can vary by device configuration.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the PC. Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and switch Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Pair your phone. Make the phone discoverable, open the PC’s Bluetooth device controls, select Manage Bluetooth devices, choose the phone, and follow the pairing prompts. The controls shown can vary by device.
- Enable Dynamic Lock. Return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Under Additional settings, turn on Dynamic lock.
- Take the phone with you when you leave. When its Bluetooth signal falls below the threshold indicating it is no longer nearby, Windows should lock the PC within a minute.
What to expect when you walk away
Dynamic Lock depends on the paired phone’s Bluetooth connection and signal; it does not use a fixed distance setting. Microsoft does not document a universal range, an option to change the one-minute behavior, or a guarantee that the lock occurs immediately. Keep the phone with you, and treat Dynamic Lock as an automatic convenience rather than a precise proximity boundary.

If Dynamic Lock or pairing does not work
- Check Bluetooth on both devices. Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled and that the phone is on and discoverable during pairing.
- Pair the phone again if it is not listed. Keep it nearby while using Windows’ Bluetooth device controls. Microsoft’s general Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance identifies range, low battery, drivers, services, and updates as possible causes of pairing or connection problems; these are general Bluetooth checks, not specific diagnoses for Dynamic Lock.
- Check the setting location. Look under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings. Microsoft notes that settings availability may vary with device configuration.
- Confirm the PC has Bluetooth. Most Windows devices include it. A USB Bluetooth adapter is an option only if the PC lacks Bluetooth support.
Dynamic Lock and other automatic locking settings
Dynamic Lock is triggered by the paired phone moving out of Bluetooth range. Windows’ sleep timing and requiring sign-in when the PC wakes are separate protections: inactivity can put the PC to sleep, and sign-in-on-wake can protect access after sleep. Microsoft’s Windows security guidance describes configuring sign-in after sleep. These settings complement Dynamic Lock but do not use the same trigger.
