You do not enable DirectX 12 with a Windows 11 switch. DirectX 12 is already included in Windows 11, and Microsoft delivers supported DirectX updates through Windows Update.
If a game cannot use DirectX 12, the cause is usually different: an outdated graphics driver, an unsupported GPU, the wrong GPU selected on a laptop, missing legacy DirectX files, or a game that is currently configured to use DirectX 11.
Update Windows 11 first
Windows Update is the supported way to receive the latest DirectX version available for your Windows installation.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart the PC if Windows asks you to.
You can also check for optional graphics-driver updates:

- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand the driver updates section, select the relevant graphics driver, and choose Download & install.
Optional driver updates are not available on every PC. If Windows Update does not offer a suitable driver, download the current driver from the official support page for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics hardware, or from your computer manufacturer.
Check whether DirectX 12 is installed
Windows 11 includes the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Use it to check the DirectX runtime reported by Windows:
- Select the Windows Search box.
- Type
dxdiag. - Open dxdiag from the search results.
- If Windows asks whether it should verify digitally signed drivers, select Yes.
- On the System tab, find DirectX Version.
If the field says DirectX 12, the Windows DirectX 12 runtime is present. There is no separate activation step to perform.
Check the GPU, driver, and feature levels
The DirectX Version field does not prove that your graphics card supports every DirectX 12 game. It reports the Windows runtime, while the graphics adapter and its driver determine the available hardware features.
In dxdiag, open the relevant Display, Display 1, or Display 2 tab. Check:

A Direct3D 12-capable driver must support at least feature level 11_0, although a particular game may require a higher feature level. Feature levels describe supported functionality; they do not measure graphics performance.
Windows 11 itself requires a graphics card compatible with DirectX 12 or later and a WDDM 2.0 driver. A driver update cannot turn a DirectX 11-only graphics card into a DirectX 12 GPU, and reinstalling DirectX cannot add hardware features.
Select DirectX 12 in the game
DirectX 12 is selected by the game rather than globally by Windows. If the game supports multiple graphics APIs, look in its:
- Graphics, Video, or Display settings;
- launcher options;
- startup or command-line options; or
- configuration file.
The option may be labelled DirectX 12, DX12, or Direct3D 12. The exact location differs between games. If a game has no DirectX 12 option, Windows cannot add one or force that game to use the API.
Make sure the game uses the correct GPU
Laptops and some desktop systems have both integrated and discrete graphics. A game may be using the integrated adapter even though the system also contains a more capable DirectX 12 graphics card.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game. Add it with Browse if it is not listed.
- Select Options.
- Choose High performance.
- Select Save.
- Restart the game.
This setting assigns a preferred GPU to the application. It does not enable DirectX 12 itself.
DirectX 12 versus DirectX 12 Ultimate
DirectX 12 Ultimate is not a separate download or Windows setting. It is a higher hardware-capability tier that includes features such as:

- Sampler Feedback.
A PC can report DirectX 12 while lacking some or all DirectX 12 Ultimate features. Ultimate support depends on the graphics chip, driver, and game. Even an Ultimate-capable GPU may need a current manufacturer driver, and a game must implement the relevant features before they have any effect.
Do not use the legacy DirectX installer to install DirectX 12
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer is often mistaken for a DirectX 12 installer. It does not upgrade the DirectX runtime built into Windows. Instead, it installs older side-by-side components used by some games, including D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX files.
Use it only when an older game reports a missing legacy component such as:

- enable DirectX 12 Ultimate; or
- repair a defective graphics driver.
Fix common DirectX 12 problems
dxdiag says DirectX 12, but the game says it is unsupported
Check the game’s minimum requirements against the GPU’s Feature Levels. Then verify that the game is using the discrete GPU, update the graphics driver, and check whether the game requires DirectX 12 Ultimate rather than basic DirectX 12.
The game’s DirectX 12 renderer may also be disabled or incompatible with that specific title. If the game offers a DirectX 11 mode, test it. This can identify a game-specific DX12 problem, but it does not change the Windows DirectX installation.
DirectX 12 Ultimate appears disabled
There is no Windows switch that turns Ultimate on. A disabled Ultimate status normally means that the detected GPU, driver, or both do not support the complete Ultimate feature set. Confirm the GPU model and install its current official driver before deciding that the hardware is incompatible.
The game reports a missing d3dx*.dll, XINPUT1_3.dll, or XAudio2_7.dll
These are legacy DirectX components. Install the official DirectX End-User Runtime or the game’s own prerequisite package. Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.

The DirectX 12 version crashes or runs worse
DirectX 12 does not guarantee higher frame rates or better stability on every computer. Game implementations differ, and feature-level support indicates functionality rather than performance. If available, switch temporarily to the game’s DirectX 11 renderer, update the graphics driver, and compare results.

The correct procedure in brief
- Run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install applicable graphics drivers from Advanced options > Optional updates, or from the GPU manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
dxdiagand confirm DirectX Version on the System tab. - Check the correct GPU, driver model, and feature levels on the relevant Display tab.
- Choose DirectX 12 in the game’s own settings if the game offers that renderer.
- Use Settings > System > Display > Graphics to assign the game to the high-performance GPU when necessary.
- Install the legacy DirectX runtime only when an older game reports missing legacy files.

Can I enable DirectX 12 with a Windows 11 setting?
No. DirectX 12 is included in Windows 11. Update Windows, install a compatible graphics driver, and select DX12 in the game if that option exists.
How do I check my DirectX version?
Press Windows Search, type dxdiag, open the tool, and check DirectX Version on the System tab.
Why does my game reject DirectX 12 when dxdiag reports DirectX 12?
The GPU may lack the required feature level, the game may be using an integrated GPU, the driver may be outdated or damaged, or the title may require DirectX 12 Ultimate.

No. That package installs legacy side-by-side components for older games and does not replace or upgrade the Windows DirectX runtime.
Can a driver update add DirectX 12 support to an old graphics card?
A driver can correct software support problems, but it cannot add DirectX 12 hardware capabilities to a GPU that does not support them.

Bottom line: Windows 11 already includes DirectX 12, so there is nothing to activate or download separately. Update Windows and the graphics driver, verify the GPU’s feature levels with dxdiag, assign the correct GPU if necessary, and choose DX12 in the game’s own settings. Use the legacy DirectX installer only for missing files from older games.
