On Android 4.2 and later, open Settings, find Build number, and tap it seven times. Enter your PIN or password if asked. After the confirmation, return to Settings and open Developer options. The exact location of Build number varies by manufacturer, and revealing the menu does not turn on USB debugging.
Reveal Developer options by tapping Build number
- Open Settings and locate Build number using the device path below, or search Settings for “Build number.”
- Tap Build number seven times. If prompted, enter your device PIN or password.
- When Android confirms that you are now a developer, return to Settings and find Developer options. It is often near the bottom of Settings or within a System or Advanced section.
Android Developers documents the seven-tap procedure and confirmation message in its guide to configuring on-device developer options. On Android 4.1 and earlier, the Developer options screen is available by default.
Find Build number on common Android devices

If your device is not listed, use Settings search or check the manufacturer’s current support instructions instead of assuming another model’s path applies.

Developer options and USB debugging are separate
Enabling the menu only makes its settings visible. You do not need to turn on USB debugging to reveal Developer options. USB debugging is for allowing Android Studio and other Android SDK tools to communicate with the device; enable it only when a task you intend to perform requires it.

Wireless debugging
The same guide documents Wireless debugging at Settings > System > Developer options > Wireless debugging on Android 16 and later, and at Settings > Developer options > Wireless debugging on Wear OS 6 and later. Pair the device with the development computer after enabling the feature. This is a separate development connection method, not part of turning on Developer options.

What the Developer options switch does
If you use settings in the menu, leave its master switch on. Android Developers says turning it off disables most developer options, except options that do not require communication between the device and a development computer. Simply exposing the menu does not require changing other settings; avoid altering options unless you understand why you need them.

No cable is needed to reveal Developer options. A USB cable is relevant only if you continue to a wired connection between the phone and a computer; Google’s Android Studio codelab lists a USB cable as optional equipment for connecting a physical device. The required cable depends on the device and connection, so check compatibility before choosing one.
