On a Mac, open Settings → See all settings → Appearance, select Dark theme, and choose Save. On an iPhone or iPad, open Google in Safari, tap More (three dots) → Settings → Appearance, then select Dark theme.
What Google’s dark-mode setting changes
Google’s Appearance control applies to Search pages, including the Google homepage, search results, and Search settings. It changes Google’s own interface; it does not force every other website opened in Safari to use a dark design.

Enable dark mode on Google in Safari on a Mac
- Open Safari and visit google.com.
- On the Google homepage, open Settings. If the compact menu does not show the full controls, select See all settings.
- Open the Appearance section.
- Select Dark theme.
- Click Save.
Return to the homepage or run a search to confirm that the background, search controls, and results interface are dark. This is a Google account or Search-preference setting, not a Safari toolbar setting.
If you cannot see “See all settings”
Make sure you are on a Google Search page rather than a different Google service. A narrow Safari window can also collapse menus. Widen the window, reload google.com, and open Settings again. Google may present slightly different menu placement as its homepage changes, but the relevant destination remains Appearance.

Enable dark mode on Google in Safari on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Safari and go to google.com.
- Tap More, represented by the three-dot menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Under Appearance, choose Dark theme.
The mobile setting controls Google Search’s mobile homepage and results presentation. If you want Google to react to the device’s Light or Dark appearance automatically, select Device default instead of Dark theme.
Choose between Dark theme and Device default
Dark theme: always dark
Dark theme is an explicit Google preference. It keeps Search dark even if the device is currently using a light appearance. This is the right choice when you want a consistent dark Google interface during the day or when macOS, iOS, or iPadOS is set to Light.
Device default: follow the operating system
Device default delegates the decision to the device. When the system switches between Light and Dark, Google Search follows it. If Google appears light while Device default is selected, check the device’s system appearance rather than repeatedly changing Safari.
Light theme: force a light page
Light theme overrides a dark system appearance for Google Search. It is useful when dark text on a light background is easier to read for a particular task.

Google says a signed-in desktop preference can be saved on each desktop, while a signed-in mobile preference can be saved across supported mobile devices and tablets. If you are not signed in, the preference may behave as a local or current-browser setting and may not follow you to another device.

- On a Mac, verify that you are signed in to the Google account for which you want the preference retained.
- On an iPhone or iPad, sign in before changing the Appearance value if you want the choice available on other signed-in mobile devices.
- If several people use the same Safari profile, each person’s Google account and local browser state can produce a different result.
Why Google is still white in Safari
Appearance is still set to Device default
Open Google’s Search settings again and inspect Appearance. Device default intentionally mirrors the device. Switch to Dark theme if you want Google to remain dark regardless of the system setting.
The preference was not saved
On a Mac, select Save after choosing Dark theme. On mobile, return to the Search page after selecting the option and reload it. If the old appearance returns, repeat the setting while signed in.
Safari is displaying a cached page
Reload the Google page. If necessary, close the tab and open google.com again. Avoid deleting all Safari data first; confirm the Google Appearance value before taking a more disruptive troubleshooting step.

You changed Safari’s appearance, not Google’s
Safari’s interface theme and Google’s Search theme are separate. A dark Safari toolbar does not guarantee a dark Google page, and a light Safari toolbar does not prevent Google from using Dark theme. Change the setting inside Google Search.
A Google account, browser profile, or device is different
Check the account avatar and the Safari profile in use. A preference selected in one signed-in account or browser profile may not appear in another. On mobile, also check whether you are using a private tab or a different device.

Google has changed its menu layout
Look for Settings, See all settings, or the three-dot More menu, then locate Appearance. The labels can move as Google updates its interface, but the Appearance choices are the controlling setting.
What dark mode does—and does not—cover
- It changes Google Search’s homepage, results pages, and Search settings.
- It does not automatically recolor unrelated sites opened in Safari.
- It does not require a physical accessory, a special Safari edition, or a second browser.
- It does not necessarily change Google apps or services that have their own appearance controls.
- It can reduce bright areas in a dim environment, but readability still depends on the page content and your display settings.
If you need broad dark-mode coverage across sites, treat a Safari extension as a separate, optional solution. An extension can apply its own rules to pages that do not expose a native dark theme, but it is not needed for Google’s homepage because Google already supplies the Appearance control.

The API returns an error instead of an image
Check that the access key is present, the URL is URL-encoded, and your request has enough time to finish. In Python, keep the timeout at 90 seconds or adjust it for your page. Inspect the HTTP status and response headers before saving the body as an image.

The capture is blank or shows a bot check
