Enable ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) in the computer’s BIOS or firmware setup—not through a normal Windows ME control-panel setting. The option exists only on systems with ACPI-capable firmware, and the name and location depend on the motherboard or PC manufacturer.
What you need to change
Windows ME is an ACPI-aware operating system, but it can use ACPI only when the computer’s BIOS provides and enables it. Look in the machine’s documentation for an option such as ACPI Aware O/S or ACPI Function. These labels are examples, not universal names.
Identify the exact PC or motherboard model first. Without that information, there is no reliable universal key, menu path or setting label.
Enable ACPI before installing Windows ME
- Find the hardware manual. Use the manufacturer’s manual for the specific computer or motherboard and locate its BIOS or firmware-setup instructions.
- Enter setup during startup. Restart the computer and press the setup key specified by the manufacturer. The key varies by model.
- Open the power-management menu. Check Power Management or a similarly named section for an ACPI-related setting.
- Enable the documented option. Select the setting that enables ACPI or identifies the operating system as ACPI-aware, following the manual’s wording. For example, a board may provide ACPI Aware O/S or ACPI Function.
- Save and restart. Save the BIOS change, then install Windows ME using the computer manufacturer’s recommended sequence.
If Windows ME is already installed
Do not assume that changing the BIOS setting automatically converts an existing installation. ACPI detection can occur during Windows setup, and the result is hardware- and firmware-specific.

One Kontron board manual states that if ACPI Aware O/S was set to No before installation, the installed operating system will not support ACPI and Windows must be reinstalled after changing the option. That is a board-specific instruction, not proof that every Windows ME computer requires reinstallation.
- Check the exact motherboard or PC manual before changing an installed system.
- Back up files and obtain Windows ME installation media and drivers if the manual requires a reinstall.
- Do not flash or change BIOS settings using instructions for a different model.
How to check whether ACPI is recognized
Use Device Manager and inspect the Computer device category. Microsoft documentation identifies that category as the place to see whether an individual computer supports ACPI. The cited documentation is for current Windows, so Windows ME may use different labels or presentation; use the equivalent Computer entry available in Windows ME.

If the Computer category does not indicate ACPI, verify that the BIOS option is enabled, confirm that the firmware is ACPI-capable, and consult the hardware manual. A BIOS setting cannot add ACPI capability to hardware whose firmware does not support it.

Looking for an ACPI switch inside Windows
ACPI is normally selected by firmware before Windows starts. Windows ME cannot make a non-ACPI BIOS ACPI-capable through a software setting.

Using a generic BIOS key or menu path
Setup keys, menu names and available options differ by manufacturer and BIOS version. Use the exact machine documentation rather than assuming a key or path from another computer.
Treating one manual’s reinstall warning as universal
The Kontron reinstall requirement applies to the behavior documented for that board. Other systems may detect a BIOS change differently, so confirm the procedure for your hardware before attempting to preserve or replace an existing installation.

Assuming Windows ME support guarantees hardware compatibility
Manufacturer documentation describes Windows ME as ACPI-aware, but that does not guarantee that every legacy computer has compatible ACPI firmware. The computer’s BIOS remains the determining prerequisite.
