The quickest method is built into WordPress: edit the page or post, add a YouTube Embed block, paste the playlist URL, and select Embed. WordPress displays the playlist’s first video and keeps playlist navigation in the player. You can also paste YouTube’s generated iframe HTML into an HTML-capable WordPress area when you need more control.
How do I embed a YouTube playlist in WordPress?
- Copy the playlist URL. Open the playlist on YouTube and copy the address from your browser or YouTube’s share controls.
- Open WordPress. Edit the page or post where the playlist should appear.
- Add the YouTube block. Select the plus button, search for YouTube, and choose the YouTube Embed block.
- Paste and embed. Paste the playlist URL into the block and select Embed.
- Save and preview. Check the page at both desktop and phone widths before publishing.
The block accepts playlist URLs, not just individual video URLs. The first video appears initially, while the player provides controls for moving through the rest of the playlist.
Can I embed a YouTube playlist without a plugin?
Yes. The native YouTube Embed block is sufficient for the standard use case, so installing a plugin is not required.
Alternative: paste YouTube’s generated embed HTML
Use YouTube’s own embed workflow when you want to work with the generated iframe code or apply supported player options.
#1 Best Overall
- On a computer, open the playlist on YouTube.
- Select Share, then choose Embed.
- Copy the HTML that YouTube supplies.
- In WordPress, add a Custom HTML block, or switch to another HTML-capable editing area available in your editor.
- Paste the code, then preview the page.
YouTube documents this same Share > Embed process for videos and playlists. The generated code is preferable to hand-writing an iframe because YouTube supplies the correct playlist reference and current player markup.
Which embedding method should you choose?
| Method | Best for | Editing experience | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress YouTube Embed block | Most pages and posts | Simple visual editing; paste the URL and embed | Standard player and responsive controls |
| YouTube Share > Embed HTML | Editors who need generated iframe markup or documented player options | Requires an HTML-capable block or editor area | More direct control over supported embed settings |
| Playlist plugin | Sites needing shortcode placement or playlist-specific display features beyond the native block | Depends on the plugin’s interface and ongoing compatibility | May add layout or management features; review privacy, maintenance and cost first |
A plugin is an optional convenience, not a prerequisite. For example, WordPress.org lists Playlist Player for YouTube as a free plugin with playlist and shortcode support, but its current compatibility and features should be checked before installation.

Make the playlist responsive
Use the block’s media-resizing control when it is available. When responsive resizing is enabled, WordPress preserves the player’s aspect ratio as the viewport becomes narrower.
- Preview at a normal desktop width.
- Resize to a phone-sized width and check that the player does not overflow the content column.
- Check tablet widths if your theme uses different breakpoints.
- Use wide or full-width alignment only when your theme supports those layout options; the setting is theme-dependent.
Optional YouTube embed settings
If you use YouTube’s generated HTML, YouTube documents optional player parameters. Apply them only when they serve a clear purpose, and follow YouTube’s current instructions because player behavior can change.

- Autoplay: YouTube’s example uses an
autoplay=1parameter in the embed URL. Browser policies may still prevent autoplay, especially when sound would start automatically. - Start time: A
startvalue specifies the starting point in seconds. - Captions:
cc_load_policy=1requests captions; YouTube also documents an optional caption-language parameter.
Do not edit the generated code blindly. Keep the playlist identifier and other attributes that YouTube supplied, and test the result after any change.
Privacy-enhanced mode: what it does and does not do
YouTube’s privacy-enhanced option changes the embed host to youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube says views in this mode do not personalize the viewer’s YouTube experience. That is not a promise that the embed is completely tracking-free, so describe the setting accurately in your site’s privacy information.

YouTube also states that its API Terms of Service and Developer Policies apply to all access to and use of the embedded player.

An embedded playlist can contain items that the player cannot show or play on your site. Check these conditions for the affected video:
Best Value
- Visibility: WordPress supports public and unlisted YouTube videos and playlists. A private video cannot play for a visitor unless the owner shared it with that viewer.
- Embedding permission: The uploader may have disabled playback on third-party websites. That video will remain unavailable in the embed even though it works on YouTube.
- Age restriction: Age-restricted videos generally cannot be watched on most third-party sites. The viewer may need to open the item directly on YouTube.
- Playlist changes: The owner may have removed a video, changed its visibility, or replaced it after you embedded the playlist.
To troubleshoot, open the playlist on YouTube, test the missing item directly, confirm its visibility and embedding settings, then preview the WordPress page again in a private browser window. Do not promise visitors that every playlist entry will render in an embedded player.
Child-directed sites and apps
If the WordPress site or app is directed to children, YouTube instructs operators to self-designate it as child-directed using YouTube’s current tools. That designation affects personalized advertising and some player features. Review YouTube’s current child-directed-site guidance before publishing the embed.
