WordPress documents live URLs in the format youtube.com/live/videocode. If the block does not accept the URL, use YouTube’s iframe code in a Custom HTML block.
Embed the stream with WordPress’s YouTube block
- Copy the stream URL. Use the URL for the intended live stream. WordPress documents the live-link format as
youtube.com/live/videocode; see WordPress’s YouTube embed instructions. - Open the WordPress editor. Edit the post or page where you want the player.
- Add a YouTube Embed block. Insert the block, paste the stream URL, then select Embed.
- Preview the page. Check that the player appears and test it at desktop and phone widths. WordPress’s instructions include previewing the embed before publishing.
The YouTube block lets visitors watch the video without leaving your site. If you want the player wider, use the block’s alignment options where available; whether wide or full-width alignment works depends on your theme. Check the actual front-end page rather than relying only on the editor preview.
Use YouTube’s iframe code if the URL block fails
If WordPress does not recognize the URL, get the embed markup directly from YouTube and place it in a Custom HTML block:
- On YouTube, open the stream and choose Share, then Embed.
- Copy the iframe HTML YouTube provides.
- In the WordPress editor, add a Custom HTML block and paste the code.
- Save or update the page, then preview the public version to verify the player.
This route is useful when a URL is not handled by a supported embed block. WordPress notes that unsupported links may be converted to text links instead; its general embeds documentation explains the distinction. YouTube’s embed instructions provide the iframe code and related options.

Make sure the stream is available to your visitors
A player can appear on the page without being playable for everyone. Check the stream’s sharing settings and confirm the uploader allows embedding. YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted visibility; choose the setting that fits the intended audience in YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Private: WordPress says private YouTube videos cannot be embedded.
- Geographic restrictions: A publisher may limit where a stream can be watched.
- Age restriction: YouTube says age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites and may send viewers to YouTube instead. See YouTube’s embed guidance.
- Stream status: Make sure the stream is active or otherwise available at the time visitors are expected to watch.
For a stream that does not play, check its YouTube viewing and embedding restrictions before changing the WordPress block.

Add live chat as a separate embed
The video player and live chat are separate elements. YouTube’s live-chat embed uses its own iframe URL, including the stream’s video ID and the domain hosting the iframe. YouTube requires the embed_domain value to match the page’s domain. Follow YouTube’s live chat instructions for the current embed details. The instructions also state that embedded live chat is not available on mobile web.
Check privacy and the viewing experience
WordPress says that non-personal identifying viewing data is shared with YouTube and the publisher when a visitor watches an embedded video. YouTube offers Privacy Enhanced Mode, which uses the youtube-nocookie.com host and prevents embedded views from influencing YouTube browsing personalization; ads shown in this mode are non-personalized. It does not remove every privacy responsibility. If your site is child-directed, YouTube requires you to self-designate it even when using Privacy Enhanced Mode. Before publishing, test the page at narrow and wide screen sizes. If the player’s proportions look wrong, check the block’s small-device media setting and your theme’s support for wide or full-width alignment.

Troubleshoot a missing or unplayable stream
- The URL becomes plain text or is rejected: Confirm it is the intended YouTube Live URL, try the YouTube Embed block, and use YouTube’s Share > Embed iframe in a Custom HTML block if needed.
- The player loads but will not play: Check that embedding is allowed, the video is not private, and there are no age or country restrictions that affect your audience.
- Some visitors cannot see the stream: Review visibility and geographic availability in the stream’s YouTube settings.
- The player is too wide or narrow on phones: Review the block’s media setting and preview the public page; layout options depend partly on theme support.
