The supported method is Google Sheets’ Publish to web feature. Open the spreadsheet, choose File > Share > Publish to web, select the whole workbook or one sheet, choose Embed, publish it, and paste Google’s generated iframe into your page’s HTML. The resulting view is read-only, and changes to the source normally appear after a short delay.
What a published Google Sheet embed does
A published embed displays spreadsheet values, formatting, charts and (when enabled) sheet tabs inside an iframe. Visitors do not receive the normal Sheets editing interface: they cannot edit cells or inspect formulas in the published view. Publishing is separate from granting named collaborators access to the original file.
Publishing can make content visible to everyone on the web, everyone in your organisation, or a group in your organisation, depending on your account and administrator settings. Do not publish confidential, personal or otherwise sensitive data. A work or school administrator may also disable publishing.
Step-by-step: embed the sheet supplied by Google
- Open the file. Sign in to Google Sheets and open the spreadsheet you want to display.
- Open the publishing dialog. Select File > Share > Publish to web.
- Choose the scope. Select Entire spreadsheet or choose one individual sheet. Publishing an individual sheet does not automatically turn the other tabs into part of the published view.
- Choose Embed. In the format selector, choose Embed. Google creates an iframe URL and HTML snippet.
- Publish. Click Publish and confirm if Google asks you to do so.
- Copy the code. Copy the HTML in the dialog and paste it into your site’s HTML editor, CMS “source” view, or a custom HTML block. A visual editor may strip iframe code, so use its code/HTML mode.
- Save and check the page. Load the published page in a private browser window and verify that the intended sheet, range and visibility are correct.
Keep Google’s generated URL and iframe attributes as the source of truth. Do not replace its spreadsheet identifier with a guessed value.

Control which sheet, range and controls appear
The generated URL can be adjusted with documented query parameters. Make a copy of the generated code before editing it, and test every change on the live page.

For example, after Google supplies the published URL, adding a range parameter such as range=A1:B14 can focus the embed on a compact table. The exact URL must retain Google’s published spreadsheet path and identifier.
Entire workbook or one tab?
- Entire spreadsheet: appropriate when visitors need several related tabs and you are comfortable publishing all of them.
- One sheet: safer and clearer for a dashboard, pricing table or public schedule that should not expose other tabs.
- One range: useful when a single table is the intended public output. Check the result after source rows or columns change.
Make the embed responsive
An iframe has a fixed width and height unless your page styles it. Put it inside a wrapper that can shrink on narrow screens:

</div>Use the iframe HTML Google generated, including its published URL, rather than treating this illustrative wrapper as a replacement. Choose a height that lets users see useful rows without creating an excessively long page. Keep a descriptive title for accessibility, and explain above the frame what the data represents and when it was last reviewed.

Updates, republishing and stopping access
Changes to the original spreadsheet usually flow to the published version automatically, but Google notes that the update can take a few minutes. In Published content and settings, clear Automatically republish when changes are made if you need to control when updates become public. That setting is useful when you prepare several edits and want to release them together.
To remove the output, return to File > Share > Publish to web, open the published-content settings and choose Stop publishing. Removing an iframe from your website alone does not necessarily stop the published URL from being accessible elsewhere, so stop publication when the data must no longer be public.
Publishing versus sharing and API access

Google’s Sheets API uses OAuth authorization scopes for spreadsheet access. Those scopes apply to the spreadsheet file rather than an individual sheet. A spreadsheet published to the web can be accessed by the API without authorization; a private spreadsheet requires authentication. API integration is therefore an alternative architecture, not a prerequisite for an ordinary iframe.
Privacy and administration checklist
- Confirm whether your account publishes to the public web, the organisation, or an organisation group.
- Remove hidden tabs, comments, formulas or rows that should not be exposed; “hidden” is not a substitute for publishing only the intended sheet.
- Use a separate public-facing spreadsheet when the source contains confidential operational data.
- Ask your administrator to enable publishing if the menu is unavailable on a managed account.
- Open the page while signed out to confirm that the audience can actually see it.
- Decide whether automatic republishing is acceptable before sharing the URL.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Publish to web option is missing
You may be using a managed work or school account whose administrator has disabled publishing, or you may not have the required ownership or sharing control. Try the file with the owner account or ask the administrator about the organisation policy.

The iframe is blank or says access is denied
Confirm that publishing completed, that you copied the published URL rather than the private editing URL, and that the publication scope permits the intended audience. Test in a private window and republish if the settings were changed.
The wrong tab appears
Return to the dialog and select the specific sheet, or use the correct gid from Google’s generated URL. Do not guess a sheet ID.
The range is not what you expected
Check the A1 notation and URL encoding. A range such as A1:B14 is deliberately limited; expand it when your public table grows, then retest on a narrow screen.
Recent edits are not visible
Allow several minutes for the published version to update, refresh without an old browser cache, and check whether Automatically republish when changes are made was disabled.

My CMS removes the iframe
Paste the snippet in an HTML/source block and check the site’s security policy. Some hosted editors permit iframes only for approved domains or administrator roles.
Visitors need to edit the sheet
A published embed cannot provide editing. Use normal Google sharing with an appropriate permission model, or build an authenticated application with the Sheets API.

Can I embed only one Google Sheets tab?
Yes. In Publish to web, choose the individual sheet instead of Entire spreadsheet; you can also use the published URL’s gid and, where appropriate, range parameters.
Can someone edit a sheet through the embedded frame?
No. Publish-to-web output is view-only. Editing requires normal sharing permissions or an authenticated application.
Does embedding expose formulas?
The published view shows values, formatting and charts, not the underlying formulas.

Use File > Share > Publish to web, open Published content and settings, and choose Stop publishing.
