Elevating your organization’s security posture takes a continuous, risk-managed program—not a single product or score. Start by agreeing on what matters most, finding and assigning ownership for the assets that support it, and fixing the weaknesses that expose those assets. Then strengthen identity and access controls, improve detection and response, test recovery, and measure whether coverage and results are improving.

What does “security posture” mean?

Security posture is the organization’s overall condition of risk and readiness: how well its people, processes, and technology protect important services and data, detect problems, respond to incidents, and recover. A dashboard score or a newly deployed security tool can offer useful evidence, but neither represents the whole program on its own.

The work begins with context. Identify mission-critical services, the data and systems they depend on, the consequences of disruption or exposure, applicable legal and contractual obligations, and the people accountable for decisions. Agree on risk tolerance and a reporting cadence so leaders can make informed trade-offs and teams know who owns remediation.

How do you strengthen security posture? A practical roadmap

Use these steps as a connected program. The order matters: vulnerability priorities and access policies are difficult to make meaningful when the organization does not know what it owns or what it needs to protect.

  1. Set governance and priorities

Define critical services, business owners, risk tolerance, obligations, and who can accept or escalate risk. Establish how security issues are reported and how progress is reviewed. CISA’s Cybersecurity Performance Goals provide baseline practices organized around governance and other protective outcomes; use them to inform a starting plan, not as a substitute for organization-specific priorities.

  2. Build an inventory of assets and dependencies

Record users and identities, endpoints, applications, data stores, cloud resources, internet-facing systems, suppliers, and the dependencies needed to restore critical services. Assign owners and keep the inventory current enough to support access reviews, vulnerability remediation, incident response, and recovery planning. CISA’s ransomware guidance calls for comprehensive asset management.

  3. Find and reduce exploitable weaknesses

Run vulnerability scans regularly, with coverage that includes internet-facing devices, and prioritize findings by exposure, criticality, and likely business impact. Patch or otherwise mitigate weaknesses, document accepted risks, and track how long critical findings remain unresolved. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide specifically recommends regular vulnerability scanning, especially for internet-facing devices, to limit the attack surface. Choose a scanning and remediation cadence that reflects how quickly assets change and the level of exposure; the guidance does not prescribe one universal interval.

  4. Strengthen identity and access

Require phishing-resistant or other strong multifactor authentication where feasible. Remove stale accounts, review privileged access, and grant people and services only the permissions needed for their roles. Consider both user and device context when deciding whether access is appropriate, and revisit access as roles, devices, and business needs change.

  5. Control access between users, devices, and resources

Apply least privilege to resource access and to communication between systems; do not rely on a broad network boundary as proof that a request is safe. For remote and cloud access, assess whether zero-trust, Secure Service Edge (SSE), or Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) patterns would improve policy enforcement and visibility. Select an approach based on the organization’s actual coverage and operating needs rather than adopting a label as an end in itself.

  6. Improve visibility, response, and recovery

Centralize useful logs from the systems and services that matter, define who investigates alerts and how incidents are escalated, and rehearse incident response. Test restoration of critical services and their dependencies; a backup or recovery plan is not proven simply because it exists. Record exercise findings, assign owners, and track corrective work.

    • Enhanced motion detection with Outdoor 4 — With Outdoor 4, enjoy a wider field of view and be alerted to motion faster with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
  7. Measure, report, and adjust

Use repeatable assessments and trend data to identify changes in coverage and risk. Review results with the owners who can act on them, adjust priorities when assets or threats change, and treat exceptions as decisions that need ownership and follow-up. A one-time assessment is a baseline, not evidence that posture is improving.

Is zero trust enough to improve security posture?

No. Zero trust is an approach to access decisions and architecture, not a complete security program. NIST defines it by the absence of implicit trust based solely on a user’s or asset’s physical or network location or ownership. Authentication and authorization happen before a session to an enterprise resource is established, with protection focused on resources rather than network segments. That approach can help organizations protect cloud services, remote work, on-premises systems, and partner access, but it does not replace governance, asset management, vulnerability remediation, monitoring, incident response, or recovery testing.

NIST’s SP 1800-35, finalized in June 2025, documents 19 example zero-trust architectures built from commercially available technologies and maps capabilities to NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 and related standards. NIST describes the practice guide as a way to see how others have built zero-trust architectures and use those examples to build your own. The examples are starting points for architecture decisions, not evidence that one vendor stack fits every organization.

In guidance published June 18, 2024, CISA and partner agencies urged organizations of all sizes to move toward Zero Trust, SSE, or SASE approaches that provide stronger visibility into network activity. Compare candidate approaches on risk reduction, cloud and remote-work coverage, policy granularity, operational effort, user friction, interoperability, and the audit evidence they produce. A complex architecture that the organization cannot operate consistently may be a poor fit.

How can you tell whether security posture is improving?

Choose a small set of repeatable indicators tied to the risks and services identified in governance. Define what counts as covered, critical, or complete before comparing periods, and use consistent data sources. The measures below are useful candidates; they are not universal targets, and the appropriate thresholds depend on the organization.

Measure What to track What it helps reveal
Asset coverage Known assets and dependencies compared with the assets included in inventories and relevant security processes. Whether teams may be making decisions with important systems, identities, or dependencies missing from view.
MFA coverage Users and accounts in scope that are protected by the organization’s required multifactor authentication. Where identity protections have not yet reached the populations or access paths the policy intends to cover.
Privileged-account coverage Privileged accounts identified, reviewed, and managed under the organization’s access rules. Whether elevated access is visible and subject to deliberate review.
Critical-vulnerability remediation time Elapsed time between identifying a critical vulnerability and recording its remediation or approved mitigation. How quickly the organization addresses its highest-priority known weaknesses; compare trends using consistent severity and timing rules.
Logging coverage Priority systems and services that provide the logs needed for investigation and detection. Whether responders can see activity across the parts of the environment that matter.
Incident-exercise findings Findings from rehearsals, with owners and corrective actions tracked to completion. Whether response plans work in practice and whether identified gaps are being addressed.
Recovery-test results Results of restoration tests for critical services and dependencies, including unresolved findings. Whether recovery arrangements have been exercised and where restoration remains uncertain.

Report trends alongside coverage and exceptions, rather than presenting a single score without context. The figures become more useful when leaders can see what is included, what changed since the previous assessment, which gaps carry the greatest risk, and who is responsible for the next action.
