Edit the entry, then refresh the page. Edge uses the Application tool, while Firefox uses Storage Inspector; their add and delete controls differ.
What editing local storage changes
Local storage is presented in DevTools as key/value pairs associated with a selected website domain or origin. Chrome describes it as data that “saves data across browser sessions.” Editing a row changes the browser-side value for that origin; it does not automatically change a database or account record on the website’s server.
Whether the site accepts the new value is application-dependent. A page may validate the value, overwrite it, ignore it, or require a reload before reading it. Always select the intended origin before changing anything.
Edit local storage in Chrome
Open the Local Storage table
- Open the website whose stored data you want to change.
- Open DevTools. You can use the browser menu or the usual DevTools keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Choose the Application panel.
- In the left sidebar, expand Storage, expand Local Storage, and select the target domain.
The main pane shows the origin’s entries in a table with Key and Value columns.

Change an existing key or value
- Double-click the Key or Value cell you want to modify.
- Enter the new text and confirm the edit.
- Refresh the page so the application reads the changed value. Chrome’s documented workflow explicitly calls for this refresh.
Changing a key name can make the original setting unreachable to the site. If you only need to alter a setting, leave the key unchanged and edit its value.
Add a new entry
Double-click an empty area of the Local Storage table, enter the new key/value pair, and confirm it. Use the exact key spelling expected by the site; keys are not interchangeable merely because their values look similar.
Delete one entry or clear the store
- Select an entry and press Delete to remove that pair.
- Use Chrome’s documented Clear all control when you intend to remove every local-storage entry for the selected origin.
Clear all is broader than deleting one row and can reset multiple unrelated preferences for that site.
Use the Console instead
Chrome’s Console runs JavaScript in the page’s JavaScript context, which makes it possible to interact with localStorage directly. Open the Console panel and run an expression such as:

localStorage.removeItem('theme')Replace theme with the actual key. If the origin you want differs from the page currently displayed, select the appropriate JavaScript context from the Console’s context menu before running the expression. Refresh afterward when the page needs to initialize from storage again.
Edit local storage in Microsoft Edge
Find the origin
- Open the target website and DevTools.
- Open the Application tool.
- Expand Local Storage and select the required domain.
Edge displays the origin’s entries as Key and Value cells.
Edit, add, and remove entries
- Edit: Double-click a Key or Value cell, enter the replacement, and confirm.
- Add: Double-click empty table space and enter a new row.
- Delete one: Select a row and press Delete, or use Delete Selected.
- Delete everything for that origin: Use Clear All.
Edge’s documented workflow does not establish one universal refresh instruction for every page. If the application does not react immediately, reload it and check whether the value remains in the table.
Use Edge’s Console
In the Console, use the same page-context expressions shown for Chrome. When targeting a different domain, choose the matching JavaScript context from the context menu first. A command executed in the wrong context can read or write a different origin’s storage.

Edit local storage in Firefox
Open Storage Inspector
- Open the website and Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open Storage Inspector.
- Select the origin’s local-storage section.
Firefox shows the origin’s entries in a table. Double-click a cell to edit its contents.
Add an entry
Click the + button in the Storage Inspector, then enter the new key and value.
Delete an entry
Open the row’s context menu to remove it, or select the row and press Delete or Backspace. Firefox’s documented controls do not establish a single cross-version “clear all” gesture, so remove only the rows you intend to delete.
The Firefox guidance does not state a universal refresh requirement. Reload if the page has already read its settings and has not noticed your edit.

Use the Console when the table is inconvenient
Read a value before changing it
localStorage.getItem('keyName')Reading first gives you a chance to copy the existing value for recovery. If the result is null, verify the key spelling and the selected origin.
Write or remove a value
localStorage.setItem('keyName', 'newValue')
localStorage.removeItem('keyName')These expressions operate in the current page context. They do not prove that the site’s application will accept the value, and they do not target another origin unless you deliberately switch to that context.
When a value looks structured
Some applications store several settings in one value rather than one setting per key. Do not replace a structured value with arbitrary text unless you know the format the page expects. Keep a copy of the original key and value before experimenting.

- Copy the original key and value into a temporary note before editing.
- Change only the intended row or key.
- Reload the page when the browser or application requires it.
- Reopen the Local Storage view and confirm that the edited value is still present.
- Test the specific feature that uses the setting.
If the value is present but the feature behaves unchanged, the page may cache the setting in memory, validate it, use a different key, or overwrite it during startup. Storage inspection alone cannot establish which behavior the application implements.

Troubleshooting
The key is missing
- Confirm that you selected the exact domain or origin, including the correct site and environment.
- Check for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation differences in the key.
- Use the page’s Console context selector if you are inspecting a domain different from the visible page.
The edit appears but the page does nothing
- Reload the page, especially in Chrome where the documented workflow calls for a refresh.
- Check whether the application expects a different value format.
- Look at the table again after reload. If the value reverted, the site likely rewrote it or rejected it.
You changed the wrong setting
Restore the original key/value pair you copied before editing. If you used Clear all or Clear All, other preferences for that origin may also have been removed; those settings can only return if the site recreates them or you restore them from a record.
The Console command affected the wrong site
Stop and inspect the active JavaScript context. Chrome and Edge both document choosing a different context when the desired domain differs from the displayed page. Run the command again only after the correct origin is selected.
Security and scope
Local-storage edits are local to the selected browser profile and origin. They are useful for debugging, testing, and recovering a client-side preference, but they are not a substitute for changing server-side account data. Avoid pasting secrets into shared recordings or leaving sensitive values visible in screenshots and screen shares.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing local storage update my account on the server?
No. DevTools changes the browser-side value for the selected origin. A website may ignore, validate, overwrite, or separately synchronize that value according to its own application logic.
Why should I copy the original value before editing?
A saved copy lets you restore one row precisely and avoids guessing what was removed if you later need to undo the change.
