Lightroom Mobile can edit photos straight from your phone’s photo library without importing them. Import photos when you want them managed in the Lightroom library; then organize them into albums, edit, and decide whether cloud sync is worth the plan you need. Viewing a device photo is not a Lightroom cloud backup.
Choose where to work with your photos
Lightroom Mobile offers two paths, and they serve different purposes:

To import, select photos from the device in Lightroom and choose the import action. Adobe’s guide describes batch selection and the option to import directly into an existing album or create a new one during import. For a connected camera or card, Lightroom also documents an import route; compatibility depends on the device, reader, card format, and app support.

Create albums that match your work
Albums group photos in the Lightroom library. A practical structure might use one album per trip, event, or client project; that is a flexible workflow suggestion, not a required Adobe taxonomy. Adobe’s description is simple: “Albums help you organize your photos by grouping them according to your workflow needs.” Adobe’s album guide
- Open the Lightroom tab and go to the albums view.
- Choose Create new, then select Album.
- Name the album and add photos from the device gallery, Lightroom library, Files, or a connected camera or card.
Album settings may include auto-add from selected device photo folders and sharing controls. If you enable auto-add, check the folders and formats selected so the album collects the photos you expect.
Find, sort, and select photos
Use Lightroom’s library controls to narrow a large collection before editing. Adobe documents search across photos, albums, people, objects, locations, and keywords, along with filters and sorting. Grid views can be square or justified, and photos can be segmented by criteria such as date or media type. The workspace also includes groupings for edited, unedited, imported, or deleted photos, plus star ratings. Adobe’s workspace overview
For a batch, select multiple photos and use the available actions to add them to albums, inspect metadata, or share. Batch-edit options and controls can differ by device, file type, app version, and plan, so check which actions are available in your selection.
Edit while keeping track of changes
Open a photo to reach its editing tools, photo information, ratings, undo and redo, versions, reset, sync status, sharing or export, and album organization. A cautious sequence is to make an edit, review the result or a version, and use reset if you want to return to the original editing state. Presets can be reused, and Adobe documents copying and pasting settings or applying settings from a previous photo. Adobe’s workspace overview
Adobe lists healing, masking, geometry tools, batch editing, and raw editing among premium features. Access depends on the subscription; check your current plan and app version rather than assuming every paid mobile plan includes the same tools. Adobe’s Lightroom Mobile FAQ
Know the difference between adding and moving
Adding a photo to another album leaves it in its current album and creates a reference in the destination. Moving transfers it and removes it from the source album. These are album operations, not a choice between keeping and deleting the underlying photo. Share, export, and manage sync
Sharing or exporting an edited photo and saving a copy to the device are distinct from syncing a Lightroom-library item. Use the export or save option when you need a local device copy; check sync status when you need to know whether a library item has synchronized. Adobe states that the free tier includes 5 GB of cloud storage shared across Adobe apps. Premium subscriptions provide expanded storage and sync, but the exact allowances and mobile-only plan features should be checked against the plan currently offered in your region. To reduce local device storage use, Adobe describes reduced-resolution downloads and Smart Previews; Smart Previews can retain editing capability while using less local storage. If you use Lightroom Classic with Lightroom Mobile, Adobe says only one Classic catalog can sync at a time and advises waiting until items are fully synced before switching catalogs. After subscription cancellation, Adobe says free mobile features remain available, but premium features and device syncing no longer do.
