To change the image people see when they share a website page, set a social image for that specific page and make sure its HTML includes the intended image URL in the og:image Open Graph tag. Then inspect the exact page URL with the social platform’s preview tool and refresh its cached data if necessary. The image shown in the page itself does not necessarily become its social-sharing thumbnail.
What controls a website’s social-sharing thumbnail?
When someone shares a link, a social network’s crawler reads information associated with the page and uses it to build a preview card. That information commonly includes a title, description, and image. The image is identified for many platforms by the Open Graph property og:image; X cards can also use twitter:card and twitter:image.
A page may contain several images, but that does not guarantee the crawler will choose the one you intend. Set an explicit social image or og:image for predictable selection. Also make sure the image URL belongs to the page being shared and can be fetched publicly by the platform’s crawler.
Changing a website’s social image changes what may appear in future link previews. It is separate from changing an image in a social post that has already been composed or published.

What size should a social-sharing image be?
There is no single size rule that guarantees identical display on every network. A practical starting point for Facebook, LinkedIn, and X is a 1200 × 630-pixel JPG or PNG with a 1.91:1 aspect ratio and a file size under 5 MB. WordPress.com Support recommends those cross-platform dimensions and file guidance on a page last reviewed August 11, 2026. Keep important text, logos, and faces near the center because platforms may crop the edges or display the card differently.

Use a well-sized source image rather than enlarging a small one: compression and resizing by a platform can soften fine text. JPG is often suitable for photographs; PNG can suit graphics with sharp edges or text. These are practical format choices, not a guarantee of how a network will process the file.
How to change the thumbnail on a WordPress.com page
First decide which URL people will share: an individual post, a page, or the home page. Those can have different image controls. On WordPress.com, a post or page uses its featured image as the first-choice preview image. If it has no featured image, the service documents a fallback chain involving slideshow, gallery, page, and other site images. Home-page and archive previews follow different logic: the home page uses the front-page featured image, then the site icon, with a logo available on some plans.

- Open the exact post or page in the WordPress.com editor. Confirm that it is the page corresponding to the URL you expect readers to share.
- Set or replace that page’s featured image. Choose the prepared social image. If your editor exposes a Link preview section, use it to inspect the preview for supported services.
- For the home page, edit the front-page image setting rather than assuming a post’s featured image controls it. Check the home-page preview separately.
- Publish or update the page. Then inspect the public page and its preview, not only the image visible inside the editor.
- Ask the social platform to refresh its stored preview if it still shows the previous image. Use the platform-specific refresh options described below.
WordPress.com automatically adds og:title, og:description, and og:image to posts and pages. A separate plugin is optional, not a requirement established for this workflow. If you control the page’s HTML, put the metadata in its <head>. Replace the example title, description, canonical page URL, and image URL with values for the page being shared. The image URL should be an absolute, publicly fetchable URL.

If a theme and an SEO plugin both output Open Graph tags, inspect the rendered page source to ensure there is not conflicting metadata. This is a practical implementation check: the crawler needs to receive the intended values in the page it fetches.
How to preview and refresh a social link card
Test the exact URL that people will share, including the relevant path and any canonical URL differences. A home page and a post on the same site can have different metadata and different cached previews.

HubSpot points readers to Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, X’s card validator, and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector. WordPress.com’s Jetpack editor also provides link previews for supported services.
- Inspect what the platform reads. If it reports an older image or metadata, first confirm that the live page itself now contains the new values.
- Request a re-scrape or inspection refresh where available. Facebook’s Sharing Debugger provides “Scrape Again.” LinkedIn’s Post Inspector can inspect the URL. WordPress.com says X re-indexes card tag information roughly every seven days, so a change may not appear there immediately.
- Check the displayed result again. A successful page update and a successful cache refresh are separate steps.
Social networks cache previews, so editing a page does not ensure every existing preview changes at once. An old card is often a cache issue rather than proof that the new metadata was not saved.

Why the wrong image appears—or no image appears
The old thumbnail is still showing
Check that the public HTML has the new og:image value, then request a fresh scrape through the relevant platform tool. Facebook offers “Scrape Again” in its Sharing Debugger; LinkedIn’s Post Inspector can inspect a URL. WordPress.com documents that X re-indexes card tag information roughly every seven days.
A different image from the page was selected
Set an explicit social image or og:image instead of relying on automatic selection. A page’s featured image, home-page image, gallery, and other content images may be treated differently. Facebook may select what it considers the best representation when there is no explicit featured image.
The tags are correct, but the image is missing
Verify that both the page and image URL are reachable without a login, access restriction, or crawler block. Check your site’s robots.txt rules and whether the image is stored in a protected directory. LinkedIn’s guidance identifies protected image locations or blocked retrieval as possible reasons a compliant image does not appear.

The image looks soft or its colors changed
Start with an image at the intended aspect ratio and adequate resolution. HubSpot notes that embedded or uncommon color profiles can be processed differently; it suggests removing an interfering color profile in an editor such as Photoshop. JPEG/PNG encoding and platform compression can also affect clarity.
Facebook flags an inferred image
Use an explicit og:image value to control the intended choice. WordPress.com’s support guidance identifies an SEO plugin as one route to that control on its platform; a plugin is not universally required.

Does changing a social image improve engagement?
A well-selected thumbnail can make the shared page preview clearer and more representative, but the cited platform and implementation guidance does not establish a specific engagement increase. Choose the image to accurately represent the page rather than relying on an unsupported percentage or a promised performance result.
