Edit a cookie consent banner in the tool that currently controls it: your consent-management platform (CMP), website builder, plugin, or custom code. The exact controls vary. Find the existing banner, change only the text, links, labels, categories, or styling you intend to update, then preview and test the published banner—including what visitors see after making a choice.
Before you edit: identify what controls the banner
A cookie banner may be managed by a CMP, a website platform, a plugin, or code in the site itself. Start by checking the tool where the banner was created or where its script is installed. If you change copy in the wrong place, the live banner may not change—or a second banner may appear.
Look in your site’s integrations, installed apps or plugins, tag manager, and page templates for the banner provider. If you are unsure, ask the person who implemented the consent tool or check the site’s documentation. Once you have identified the controlling system, edit the existing banner rather than creating a replacement by default.
Decide what needs to change
- Message: the introductory explanation visitors see.
- Links: for example, a link to your privacy policy or cookie declaration.
- Button labels: the wording on accept, reject, or settings controls.
- Category text: descriptions for categories such as analytics or marketing, when the platform exposes them.
- Appearance: supported styling such as colors, layout, or typography.
Make sure the wording matches the choices the interface actually provides. Do not promise visitors that they can reject or customize optional cookies if the banner does not offer those actions.

Edit the banner in Cookiebot
Cookiebot Support documents a text editor for an existing consent banner. Its instructions, updated March 26, 2026, say the template text can be customized, with formatting and links available.
- Sign in to Cookiebot Manager.
- Open Settings > Content.
- Click the banner text you want to change and edit it.
- Use the formatting toolbar for supported formatting, such as bold text, bullets, or numbered lists. Use the HTML control if you need to edit HTML.
- Add or update links as needed, such as a Privacy Policy or Cookie Declaration link.
- Preview the change, then save using the checkmark in the blue sidebar.
After saving, visit the live site and inspect the banner in the context where it appears. Check that links open the correct pages and that any formatting is readable on mobile as well as desktop.
Edit an existing banner in HubSpot
In HubSpot, open the consent-banner settings and select the name of the existing banner you want to change. When category-level opt-in or opt-out is enabled, review the default text for each category as well as the cookie-settings button text. The available text fields depend on the banner configuration, so do not assume every HubSpot banner exposes the same set of controls.
Check that category descriptions and button labels accurately reflect the choices visitors can make. HubSpot notes that its settings are not a substitute for legal advice tailored to a particular business. If you are changing consent language for compliance reasons, consult qualified counsel familiar with your business and the jurisdictions where your site operates.

If your site uses a custom implementation, edit the component or configuration that defines its content, messages, actions, labels, and classes. The GOV.UK Design System’s cookie-banner component is one example of a code-based approach: its documented examples show distinct accept and reject outcomes and a persistent route for visitors to change cookie settings later.
Keep the interaction consistent
Update the message and action labels together. If a visitor accepts or rejects, the resulting confirmation should describe what happened. Make sure there is also a usable way to revisit cookie settings if your implementation supports that behavior. A banner’s wording, available actions, and actual consent handling need to agree; changing only the visible label does not necessarily change the underlying behavior.
Sanitize HTML
If you allow HTML in banner content, sanitize it before rendering. The GOV.UK Design System documentation specifically cautions that production HTML should be sanitized to protect against cross-site scripting (XSS). Do not treat text entered in an admin field as safe merely because it is intended to be displayed in a banner.
What to do if your banner is managed through Wix
Wix’s API reference search excerpt describes an endpoint for updating banner settings and displayed text, and says the API cannot change the list of consent types shown to visitors. Because the API page itself was not available for verification here, treat this as a limited pointer rather than a complete set of implementation instructions. Check Wix’s current API reference and your site’s configuration before building an update around that endpoint.
Recommended Free Tools
If you only need to change displayed wording, first see whether the existing banner can be edited through the relevant Wix controls. Do not expect a text-update method to add or remove consent categories if the API does not expose that capability.
Preview and test the published banner
A preview catches layout and copy problems, but the published site is the final check. Test in a fresh browser session or clear the relevant consent state so the banner appears again. Verify both the initial view and the state after each available choice.
- Initial view: the message, buttons, links, and any category controls are visible and legible.
- Accept: the confirmation or resulting state matches the visitor’s action.
- Reject: if offered, the result is distinct and the wording does not imply acceptance.
- Settings: visitors can find and use any category controls, and any settings button is labeled clearly.
- Reopening settings: a persistent route or control works if your implementation provides one.
- Responsive layout: the banner does not obscure its own buttons or essential site controls on small screens.
- Links: privacy and cookie information links lead to the intended, current pages.
Test the actual consent behavior, not just the text. A button’s appearance alone does not establish that the site’s consent preferences are being saved or applied correctly.
Common editing problems and fixes
The live text has not changed
Confirm you edited the banner that is installed on the live site and saved or published the change. Then reload in a fresh session. If a cache or a separate deployment process is involved, clear or refresh it according to your site’s setup.
A second banner appears
Check whether a new banner was created instead of editing the existing one, or whether two tools are both injecting consent interfaces. Disable or remove only the unintended integration after confirming which system should control consent.
A link or formatting looks wrong
Reopen the content editor, inspect the link target and formatting, and preview again. If editing HTML, use valid markup and sanitize it before production. Check the result on mobile, where long text and inline links can wrap differently.
The labels promise options visitors cannot use
Review the banner’s enabled actions and category controls. Align the copy with the actual configuration, or configure the consent tool to provide the promised choices. In HubSpot, category-level copy is relevant when category-level opt-in or opt-out is enabled.
The banner disappears during testing
The browser may already have a stored consent choice. Use a fresh browser profile or reset the site’s consent state using the controls available in your platform, then reload to test the first-visit view.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of the edited banner for review, documentation, or a change request, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a banner editor: make and publish the banner change in your CMP or site code first, then capture the resulting page.
For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of the live page; replace the URL with your own page and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Choosing the right editing route
| Where the banner is managed | What the documented route supports | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Cookiebot Manager | Text editing and formatting, HTML, links, preview, and save. | Preview and save the existing banner, then inspect the live page. |
| HubSpot | Edit an existing banner; category text and settings-button text where category-level controls are enabled. | Make copy match the options enabled for visitors. |
| Custom code using the GOV.UK component | Configurable content, messages, actions, labels, and classes. | Sanitize production HTML and test accept, reject, and settings behavior. |
| Wix API | A search excerpt describes updating settings and displayed text; it says consent types cannot be changed through the API. | Verify current API details directly before relying on them. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I create a new banner to change the wording?
Usually, edit the existing banner that is already connected to your site. Creating another can result in duplicate consent interfaces.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I change consent categories by editing the banner text?
No. Text changes do not necessarily change the consent controls or the site’s consent behavior; those depend on the platform configuration or implementation.
