Verify the database name and table prefix before you begin, and keep a backup of the original. This copies database content—not themes, plugins, uploads, or other WordPress files.
Before you start: identify the database and make a backup
Find the database name and table prefix in the site’s wp-config.php. The $table_prefix value corresponds to the beginning of that installation’s table names. If the database is shared with another application or WordPress installation, identify and export only the tables with the correct prefix. WordPress explains these settings in its wp-config.php documentation and discusses separate installations in its Test Driving WordPress guide.
Make a database backup before changing or copying data. WordPress recommends regular database backups and keeping a backup before changes; its database backup guide describes the export process. Save the SQL file somewhere safe. For a full-site backup, retain the WordPress files separately as well: the database contains posts, pages, comments, settings, and other database content, but not themes, plugins, media uploads, wp-config.php, or other files.
How to duplicate the WordPress database
1. Export the source tables
- Sign in to your hosting control panel and open phpMyAdmin. The route and label depend on the host.
- In phpMyAdmin, select the source database identified in
wp-config.php. - Open Export. Choose Quick for a straightforward export of all tables in that database, or Custom to select specific tables and export options. If the database holds other applications’ data, use Custom and select only the WordPress tables with the correct prefix.
- Choose SQL as the export format if it is not already selected, then start the export and save the downloaded file.
WordPress documents these export options in its database backup instructions. phpMyAdmin’s exact labels may differ by version and host.

2. Create or select a separate destination database
Use your hosting control panel to create a new database, or select the destination database already provided for the copy. For a straightforward restore, WordPress recommends that the destination have no tables. Double-check the selected database before continuing: importing into the source database or another populated database can replace existing tables or data, depending on the dump and import settings.
3. Import the SQL export
- Select the destination database in phpMyAdmin.
- Open Import and use the file selector to choose the SQL export you downloaded.
- Start the import and wait for phpMyAdmin to report its result.
The upload control and maximum file size depend on the phpMyAdmin installation and host configuration; there is no universal limit. If the database is too large for the interface, WordPress points to direct MySQL or MariaDB commands as an alternative in its database backup guide.

Configure and verify the copy
The copied WordPress installation must use the destination database’s credentials, and its $table_prefix must match the copied table names. If the copy has its own wp-config.php, check that file’s database name, username, password, host, and prefix against the destination. WordPress outlines database settings and migration considerations in its migration guide.
Avoid changing table prefixes casually. If you intentionally rename tables, update $table_prefix to match; WordPress also cautions that related keys in the usermeta table may need corresponding changes. Back up first and validate the result carefully.

- Confirm the destination contains the expected WordPress tables and that their names use the prefix configured for the copy.
- Confirm the copied installation can connect using its own database credentials.
- If the goal is a working clone or site move, account for files and environment-specific settings as well as the database. The SQL export alone does not copy those files.
When phpMyAdmin is not the right option
For a small or manageable database, phpMyAdmin provides a graphical export-and-import workflow. For a very large database, the upload limit or practical capacity of the host’s phpMyAdmin may prevent an import; WordPress documents direct MySQL or MariaDB commands for large databases but does not establish a universal size threshold. If you need to move the entire site rather than duplicate database content alone, choose a migration approach that also handles files and any URL or environment changes.
