To drive a DYNAMIXEL continuously with an ESP32, first choose what “360-degree” means for your application: wheel-like rotation, commanded velocity, or precise positioning across multiple turns. Then confirm that your exact actuator supports that mode and whether it uses TTL or RS-485. The ESP32 UART needs a suitable half-duplex interface between it and the servo; the UART alone is not the complete connection.

First decide what “360-degree servo” means

That phrase can describe three different behaviors. They are not interchangeable, and DYNAMIXEL models do not all support the same operating modes.

  • Continuous wheel-like rotation: the actuator turns without targeting a single angle, as a drive wheel would.
  • Velocity control: you command the motor to rotate at a selected velocity. This is also suited to drive wheels, but it is a distinct operating mode from a basic wheel-mode output command.
  • Multi-turn position control: you command a target position several revolutions away, rather than asking the motor to keep rotating indefinitely.

Identify the model printed on the actuator before wiring or writing code. For instance, the AX-12A and XL430-W250 offer different modes, protocols, and voltage requirements.

Choose an actuator mode that matches the motion

Actuator and mode Motion behavior Protocol and electrical notes
AX-12A Wheel Mode Endless wheel-like rotation with directional output control. ROBOTIS describes Wheel Mode as allowing output control, not speed control, so do not assume it provides a commanded-speed mode. Protocol 1.0; TTL half-duplex; 9.0–12.0 V input, with 11.1 V recommended by ROBOTIS.
XL430-W250 Velocity Control Mode Commands velocity and is intended for uses such as drive wheels. Protocol 2.0 by default; TTL half-duplex; ROBOTIS lists a 12 V maximum and 11.1 V recommended.
XL430-W250 Extended Position Control Mode Targets multi-turn positions across 512 turns (−256 to +256 revolutions), according to the ROBOTIS manual. This is position control, not continuous-speed operation. Protocol 2.0 by default. Follow the model’s electrical and power requirements.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from independent testing. AX-12A joint operation is specified as 0–300 degrees; its documentation also lists Wheel Mode, but that does not make its normal joint range 360 degrees. See the ROBOTIS AX-12A documentation and the XL430-W250-T e-Manual.

Plan the ESP32-to-DYNAMIXEL connection

DYNAMIXEL uses digital packet serial communication over a half-duplex TTL or RS-485 bus. ROBOTIS explains that “the main controller needs to convert its UART signals to the half duplex type.” That means an ESP32 UART cannot simply be assumed to connect directly to the actuator data line: use an interface that supports the bus type and half-duplex direction handling.

  1. Check the exact actuator and bus. Confirm the model and whether it is TTL or RS-485 before selecting an interface. ROBOTIS describes TTL models with a three-pin connector and RS-485 models with a four-pin connection; verify the actual model’s pinout rather than relying on connector shape alone.
  2. Choose a compatible half-duplex interface. The interface must translate between the ESP32 UART and the actuator bus and manage transmit/receive direction as required. For TTL, check the data-line voltage requirements of the specific ESP32 board, interface, and servo. ROBOTIS cautions that its illustrated TTL circuit is designed for 5 V or 5 V-tolerant microcontrollers; otherwise, a level shifter should be used. Do not assume a 3.3 V ESP32 signal is automatically safe or accepted by every combination.
  3. Power the actuator separately from the ESP32 GPIO. Use a supply within the actuator’s model-specific voltage range and with enough current capacity for the number of motors and their load. Do not attempt to power a motor from an ESP32 GPIO pin. Keep signal reference and wiring consistent with the selected interface’s diagram.
  4. Match software to the model. Use the correct DYNAMIXEL protocol and the model’s control-table addresses. AX-series devices such as AX-12A use Protocol 1.0; XL430 uses Protocol 2.0 by default. ROBOTIS’s DYNAMIXEL SDK overview documents Protocol 1.0 and 2.0 support and embedded-board use through Arduino IDE and C/C++ libraries.

ROBOTIS’s DYNAMIXEL Selection Guide and DYNAMIXEL Shield/interface documentation provide interface guidance. The cited documentation does not establish a verified ESP32-specific circuit, pin mapping, timing implementation, or ready-to-run ESP32 example, so validate the interface and driver with your exact board and actuator.

If you have an AX-12A and want wheel motion

Use the AX-12A’s Wheel Mode rather than treating its normal joint-position mode as a 360-degree position mode. Keep the limitation in mind: ROBOTIS describes Wheel Mode as output control rather than speed control. If the project needs a commanded velocity, an actuator with a documented velocity mode, such as the XL430-W250, is a closer match.

AX-12A uses Protocol 1.0, TTL half-duplex communication, and a specified input range of 9.0–12.0 V, with 11.1 V recommended by ROBOTIS. For an ESP32 build, the essential first step is still selecting and checking a suitable half-duplex TTL interface and its logic-level compatibility; do not copy an unverified direct-wire pinout.

A reader asking how to configure an “MX-64AT” for Wheel Mode is asking about that specific model; it is not evidence that another DYNAMIXEL supports the same mode. Check the exact actuator documentation before applying AX-12A or XL430 instructions. The original MX-64AT Wheel Mode question illustrates why model identification matters.

When the XL430-W250 is a better fit

Choose the XL430-W250 when the required behavior is velocity control for a drive wheel or extended-position control for a multi-turn target. In Extended Position Control Mode, ROBOTIS specifies a range of 512 turns, from −256 to +256 revolutions; that does not mean the mode is an endless rotation command. The XL430 uses Protocol 2.0 by default, and ROBOTIS lists 12 V as its maximum and 11.1 V as recommended in the selection guide.

Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a universal compatibility guarantee: check the connector, bus, protocol, voltage, and compatibility with the rest of your hardware and software before substituting an actuator.
