For a standard 16:9 YouTube video, downscale 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) to 1080p (1920 × 1080) in your editor’s export settings, keep the source frame rate, and use YouTube’s SDR upload recommendations: MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, BT.709 color, and 8 Mbps at 24–30 fps or 12 Mbps at 48–60 fps. If you mean a continuous YouTube Live broadcast rather than a playlist of uploaded videos, use the separate live-ingest guidance; upload and live settings are not interchangeable.

First decide what “playlist stream” means

A YouTube playlist is a sequence of uploaded videos. Prepare each video as its own 1080p upload, then arrange the entries in the playlist. This avoids rendering a new combined file when you want viewers to move between separate videos.

If you mean one continuous, real-time YouTube Live broadcast, the encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, which transcodes that input into viewer formats. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, not the upload bitrate table below. YouTube also says its low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K live streams.

Choose the right 1080p frame

For 16:9 source footage, set the output to 1920 × 1080. YouTube defines 4K UHD as 3840 × 2160. Resizing reduces the pixel dimensions; it does not add detail that was not captured in the original.

Keep the source aspect ratio. For a source that is not 16:9, choose deliberately between fitting the whole image (which may leave unused space), cropping edges to fill 16:9, or exporting at another ratio. Do not stretch the image. YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s dimensions and aspect ratio, and its guidance advises against baking padding or black bars into the video because that can interfere with player adaptation. See YouTube’s aspect ratio guidance.

Downscale and export each video

In a video editor

  1. Open the 4K source in an editor such as Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro. These are examples, not required applications.
  2. Set the sequence or export frame size to 1920 × 1080 for 16:9 footage. Preserve the source’s intended aspect ratio and framing.
  3. Keep the frame rate at the rate at which the footage was recorded. YouTube’s upload guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
  4. For SDR, export progressive video in MP4 with H.264, BT.709 color, and the recommended bitrate for the chosen frame rate in the table below.
  5. Review the rendered file before uploading: check that the frame is not stretched or unintentionally cropped, playback is smooth, and audio is present and synchronized.
  6. Upload the finished 1080p file to YouTube, wait for HD processing to complete, then add it to the intended playlist in the correct order.

YouTube lists the following SDR upload bitrates for 1080p. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder or scene requires exactly that rate.

1080p frame rate YouTube recommended upload bitrate (SDR)
24, 25, or 30 fps 8 Mbps
48, 50, or 60 fps 12 Mbps

These figures are for uploading completed videos, not live ingest. For HDR footage, do not blindly apply the SDR color and bit-depth settings; use YouTube’s separate upload encoding guidance for HDR.

If 4K editing is too demanding

Edit with proxies—lower-resolution working copies—rather than making the final export from those copies. YouTube’s 4K workflow guide recommends 1080p or 720p proxies when a computer struggles with 4K editing, and explains that proxy edits can be synced back to the 4K originals for export. Confirm the final output is set to 1080p. You can also transfer source files to an external SSD as part of managing 4K media; YouTube presents this as an option, not a requirement. See YouTube’s 4K workflow guide.

Keep playlist videos separate or combine them?

Keep them as separate playlist entries

Convert each video independently and arrange the uploads in YouTube. This retains individual entries and avoids a full concatenation render.

Join them into one continuous file

Before joining clips, inspect their dimensions, frame rates, codecs, audio streams, and durations. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join files in sequence without re-encoding, but expects matching streams and time bases; inaccurate durations can cause gaps or artifacts. When the clips differ or need normalization, re-encoding with the concat filter is often the appropriate route. FFmpeg’s FAQ says of that filter: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” See the FFmpeg concatenation FAQ. There is no reliable universal join command without knowing the actual source properties.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

  • Use footage, music, and other material you own or have permission to use. A playlist or continuous stream does not remove copyright obligations.
  • Review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies if you intend to monetize. Reused or repetitive material can affect monetization eligibility; converting resolution does not make material original or grant rights.
  • Keep the original files until you have checked the uploaded version and playlist playback. A local copy makes it easier to correct an export without rebuilding the source edit.
