Use Meta’s built-in Download Your Information tools to request a copy of your Facebook or Instagram content. You can save a local copy, and Facebook also offers a way to transfer a copy to another service. If you plan to delete your Facebook account, download anything you want to keep first.
Where to find Meta’s download tools
Meta’s official guidance identifies a separate Download Your Information tool for Facebook and Instagram. These controls are available through account settings and Accounts Center, Meta’s hub for managing settings and connected experiences across its services (Meta privacy guidance; Meta Newsroom; Accounts Center overview).
- Open Facebook or Instagram and go to the app’s settings.
- Look for Accounts Center, then find the information and permissions area.
- Select the Facebook or Instagram account you want to save and open its Download Your Information tool.
Labels and availability can vary with device, locale, and account, and Meta may change the interface. Meta confirms the Instagram download tool, but the official material available here does not establish a reliable current, click-by-click Instagram screen sequence.
Download Facebook information to keep a copy
Facebook’s Help Center says you can request all available information at once or select particular categories and date ranges. Choose the broader archive if you want a more complete record; narrow the selection when you only need certain material. The exact items available depend on the categories shown in your account’s tool (Facebook: Download your information).

Use the tool’s on-screen options to submit the request and follow its instructions to obtain the copy. The official material cited here does not establish a universal preparation time, notification process, or period before a generated file expires, so do not rely on a particular turnaround or availability window.
Choose between downloading and transferring
Facebook also documents a transfer option for copying photos, videos, posts, or other information to another service. Pick the route that matches what you plan to do with the copy:

Facebook’s cited guidance confirms the transfer feature but does not establish which destinations are currently compatible. Check the options displayed in your account rather than assuming a particular service is supported (Facebook: Transfer a copy of your information).

If you intend to delete your Facebook account, request and save the material you want first. Facebook’s deletion guidance warns that once the account is deleted, you cannot retrieve information you added, including photos and posts (Facebook: Delete your account).

Use Meta’s tools rather than third-party downloaders
The built-in account tools provide the supported route described by Meta for requesting a copy of Facebook or Instagram information. A third-party downloader or browser extension is not needed for this process. For account privacy and safety, use Meta’s own settings and follow the options shown for the account you are exporting.
