First decide which file you need: an image that already appears on a website, or a thumbnail image of the webpage itself. To save a displayed image in Chrome on a computer, right-click it, choose Save Image As, and select a destination. To make a thumbnail of the page, take a screenshot and crop or resize it—or use a screenshot service if you need to do this repeatedly.
What do you mean by a website thumbnail?
The phrase can describe two different things, and the right download method depends on which one you want:
- An image from a website: a photo, illustration, or preview image displayed within a page. You save the image file the site is showing.
- A thumbnail of a website: a small image depicting a webpage, often used in a link preview, report, or catalog. You create it by capturing the page and, if necessary, resizing or cropping the result.
These files are not interchangeable. Saving a displayed image does not capture the rest of its webpage. Taking a screenshot of a webpage does not necessarily give you the original image file or its full resolution.
Save an image that is already on a website
Chrome on a computer
- Open the webpage containing the image.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Save Image As.
- In the save dialog, choose a folder and filename, then save.
Chrome’s documented workflow is to right-click an image and choose Save Image As. Downloads normally go to the browser’s default download location unless you choose another destination in the dialog or have changed your download settings.

If the thing you want is a download link
A page may link to a file rather than display it as an image. In that case, use the page’s download link, or right-click the link and choose Save link as if that option is available. Saving the link downloads the linked file; it is different from saving an image rendered on the page.
If “Save Image As” is missing
The exact context menu depends on the browser, operating system, and how the site presents its content. The visual may be a CSS background, part of an embedded viewer, or inside an interface that does not expose the underlying image as a normal page image. You can try opening the image in a new tab if the browser offers that option, or look for a download control supplied by the site. If you need only what is currently visible, a screenshot may work, but it can be lower resolution than the original and may include nearby page elements.
Make a thumbnail of the webpage itself
For a one-off thumbnail
- Open the webpage and arrange it as you want it to appear. Close overlays you do not want in the image, and set a useful browser window size.
- Use your device’s screenshot feature to capture the visible page.
- Open the saved screenshot in an image editor or the device’s built-in editing tool.
- Crop out browser chrome or surrounding content if needed, then resize or export to the format required by your destination.
A normal device screenshot captures what is visible on screen. It may not include content farther down the page. A full-page capture is different: it aims to include the page beyond the current viewport, though long pages and dynamic content can affect the result.

Choose dimensions for where the thumbnail will appear
There is no single thumbnail size that is right for every use. A social platform, content-management system, internal dashboard, and link preview may each expect different dimensions or aspect ratios. Check the destination’s current image requirements before cropping. Keep a copy of the un-cropped capture when practical; you can make a new crop for another placement without recapturing the page.
For repeated or automated captures
If you need page previews regularly, a screenshot API can automate capture and offer controls such as viewport dimensions, output format, full-page capture, or targeting a particular page element. OpenGraph.io’s documentation describes those kinds of capture options and identifies link-preview thumbnails as a use case. Its documentation also says generated screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours, so download or cache a result you need to retain. Verify the service’s current details before relying on a particular option or retention behavior.
For any recurring workflow, decide whether you need a whole page or one element, what viewport and format suit the destination, and how long the resulting file must remain available. Keep your own copy if the service returns a temporary URL.

Check reuse rights before publishing a saved image
Being able to download an image does not mean you have permission to republish it. Before using a saved image publicly or commercially, check the rights holder’s license, attribution requirements, and restrictions. Google’s image metadata guidance describes fields that can identify an image content URL, license, license-acquisition page, creator, copyright notice, and credit; those fields can help you investigate an image’s terms, but do not themselves grant permission.

Rules can also be specific to the organization whose content or marks appear in a screenshot. Google’s brand guidance notes that third-party approvals may be required for screenshots containing Google products or third-party content. The W3C says screenshots must not be used to circumvent its logo usage policy. Those are organization-specific policies, not a complete statement of copyright law for every jurisdiction or use.

The saved image is not the one I wanted
Check whether you right-clicked a displayed image or a link surrounding it. On a page with a clickable image, the menu option may act on the image or the link depending on where the pointer is. If you need the linked file, use the link’s download action; if you need the image shown in the page, use the image-saving option when available.

A device screenshot usually captures only the visible screen area. Scroll and take multiple captures, or use a full-page capture method when you need the entire page. For automated capture, look for a full-page option and check the output before using it; content that loads only after scrolling may need a method that loads lazy images.

The screenshot includes a popup or consent notice
For a manual capture, dismiss the notice if the site permits it and capture again. If you use an automated service, check whether it supports handling consent interfaces and removing overlays, and confirm those options are enabled. Automated behavior can vary by site, so inspect the resulting image rather than assuming every overlay has been handled.
The thumbnail looks blurry
Resizing a small screenshot to a larger display size cannot restore detail that was not captured. Capture at a suitable viewport or scale and reduce to the destination’s required dimensions rather than enlarging a tiny image. If you need a specific image from the page rather than a view of the page, saving the original displayed image may preserve more detail.
The capture is the wrong shape or format
Check the destination’s aspect ratio and supported formats, then crop or export accordingly. A screenshot API may let you set output format and viewport dimensions; these are separate decisions, since a format change does not automatically create the right crop.

Is a website thumbnail the same as a favicon?
No. A thumbnail depicts a page or an image from it. A favicon is a small site-identifying icon. Use the site’s available icon or an appropriate favicon retrieval method when the icon is what you need.
Can I download any image I can see?
You may be able to save a copy technically, but that does not establish permission to reuse it. Check the applicable license and terms before republishing.
