You can download most HTML images without paid software: right-click the visible image in Chrome or Firefox and choose Save Image As. When that option is blocked or saves a thumbnail, inspect the page’s src, srcset, CSS background, or loaded resources, open the actual file in a new tab, and save it. To keep an offline copy of an entire page, use the browser’s complete-page save feature.

Download one visible image in Chrome or Firefox
- Open the webpage in Chrome or Firefox.
- Right-click the image (Control-click on macOS).
- Choose Save Image As (Firefox labels it Save Image As…).
- Select a folder, keep the supplied extension unless you intentionally convert the file, and confirm.
Chrome’s documented route is “Images: Right-click on the image and choose Save Image As.” See Google Chrome Help. Firefox documents the equivalent action in Mozilla Support.
Check what you actually downloaded
Image URLs can return WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, SVG, or another format. The filename extension is not proof of the pixels displayed on screen, so open the file or check its properties after saving. Do not rename an image from one format to another; convert it only with software that understands the format.
When the image is behind a link or custom viewer
Open the resource directly
Right-click and choose Open image in new tab when available, then save the newly opened resource. If the image is wrapped in a link, inspect the anchor’s href; it can point to a larger file than the thumbnail. A viewer may also expose a download button or open the original after you select “view image.”

When right-click is disabled
A disabled context menu is only a page interface choice. Use DevTools instead:
- Right-click another part of the page and choose Inspect (or use your browser’s DevTools shortcut).
- In Elements, use the element picker and select the image.
- Copy the URL from
src, asrcsetcandidate, an enclosing link’shref, or a CSSbackground-image. - Paste that URL into a new tab and use Save Image As.

Find the full-resolution file in HTML
Read src and srcset
An <img> element normally has src, and may also have srcset. MDN explains that srcset can list alternatives with width descriptors such as 480w and 1200w, or pixel-density descriptors such as 1x and 2x: MDN’s <img> reference.

- Open DevTools and locate the relevant
<img>. - Copy the
srcURL as a baseline. - If
srcsetexists, compare its candidates and choose the largest width or density the site actually exposes. - Paste the selected URL into a new tab and save it.
The browser chooses among candidates based on viewport size and device pixel ratio. A larger candidate is not automatically the site’s uncropped original; it is simply the largest listed resource.

A <picture> element can provide different files for media conditions or formats. Inspect each nested <source> and its srcset. For a background image, inspect the element’s computed styles for background-image: url(...). If the URL is generated or hard to find, reload with DevTools open and watch the Network or Resources panel while the page loads. MDN’s images guidance and web.dev Images describe responsive sources and format selection.
Save every image with an offline page copy
Firefox: Web page, complete
- Open the page and, if necessary, scroll through it so lazy-loaded images appear.
- Open the save command and choose Web page, complete.
- Save the HTML file. Firefox creates a companion directory containing pictures and other required files.
Firefox says this option lets you view the page as originally shown with pictures. Its Page Info dialog also has a Media panel that lists page media. Instructions are in Mozilla Support.

Chrome: Save Page As
In Chrome choose More > More Tools > Save Page As; the path is documented by Google Chrome Help. Choose the complete-page option offered by your version when you need associated resources rather than only the HTML.
What an archive will not capture
- Images loaded only after scrolling, clicking, or later JavaScript execution.
- Resources behind a login, signed URL, hotlink protection, or other access control.
- Images blocked by a failed request, consent flow, bot check, or network error.
- Content inserted after the save operation finishes.
Reload and scroll before saving when practical. A page copy is an offline snapshot, not a guarantee of every original asset.

Why a saved image may not be the one you expected
- It is a thumbnail: inspect
srcset,<picture>, or the enclosing link for a larger candidate. - The file is HTML instead of an image: the URL may redirect to a login page, error page, or consent screen.
- The image is blank: reload, wait for it to render, and check Network for a failed request.
- Only part of a gallery saved: the remaining images may be lazy-loaded or created after interaction.
- The downloaded file will not open: keep the original extension and verify that the response is actually an image.
Do not attempt to bypass authentication, signed URLs, CAPTCHAs, or other access controls. Ask the site owner for an authorized copy when the resource is restricted.

Rights, attribution, and permitted reuse
Downloading a file and having permission to republish it are different questions. MDN advises obtaining explicit written permission from the copyright holder and checking whether an image is royalty-free or rights-managed: MDN’s HTML images guide. Prefer images you created, public-domain works, or licenses that permit your intended use. Keep attribution and license records when required. A browser’s ability to save a file does not change its copyright status.

- For a single static image, direct browser saving is fastest and preserves the server’s original bytes.
- For many URLs, capture or download in controlled batches and respect the site’s terms and rate limits.
- Record the source URL, download time, response format, and license information.
- For responsive pages, specify the viewport and device pixel ratio before comparing files.
- Verify that a successful HTTP response contains image data rather than a redirect or HTML error.
FAQ
Can I download an image if JavaScript disables saving?
Yes, when the image is publicly delivered to your browser. Inspect the element or Network panel, copy its resource URL, and save that URL directly. This does not grant access to protected content.
How do I download images from a page without opening each one?
Use Firefox’s complete-page save for an offline snapshot, or use an authorized automated capture workflow when you need a repeatable batch. Expect lazy, dynamic, and access-controlled assets to require separate handling.
Does choosing the largest srcset value guarantee the original?
No. It selects the largest candidate listed in the HTML. The site may have a still-larger original that is not exposed publicly, or the candidate may be cropped or transformed.
