On a normal Windows 11 PC, Chrome is installed from Google’s official website—not from a Command Prompt command. The standard process is to download the installer, approve Windows’ security prompts, and let the installer finish.
Google lists Windows 11 as supported for both Intel-based and ARM-based PCs. The current requirement is Windows 10 or later for Intel processors with SSE3, while ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11 or later.
Before downloading Chrome
Make sure you are downloading Chrome from google.com/chrome. Avoid download sites that bundle browsers with additional software.
| Check | What applies on Windows 11 |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 is supported. |
| Processor | Intel PCs need an Intel Pentium 4 or later with SSE3. ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later. |
| Internet connection | Normally required to download the standard installer. |
| Permissions | Windows may ask you to approve the installer through User Account Control. |
| Windows edition | Windows 11 in S mode blocks applications installed from outside the Microsoft Store. |
How to download and install Chrome on Windows 11
- Open an existing browser, such as Microsoft Edge.
- Go to https://www.google.com/chrome/.
- Select Download Chrome.
- Save the installation file if your browser asks where to put it. It will usually be in your Downloads folder.
- Open the downloaded installation file. The filename may vary, but it is typically a Chrome setup executable.
- If Windows displays Do you want to run this file?, select Run.
- If User Account Control asks, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, select Yes.
- Wait while Chrome downloads its remaining files and installs. You do not need to enter a Command Prompt or PowerShell command.
- When installation completes, open Chrome. On Windows 11, a Chrome window normally opens automatically.
If the installer appears to do nothing, check the taskbar and notification area. Windows security software may be examining the file, or the installer may be waiting for an approval dialog behind another window.

Sign in and make Chrome your default browser
Installing Chrome does not require signing in to a Google account. To sync bookmarks, passwords, history, and other settings, open Chrome and select Turn on sync or the profile icon, then sign in.
To set Chrome as the default browser in Windows 11:
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Default browser.
- Select Make default.
Windows may open its Default apps page. If it does, choose Chrome for the web links or file types you want Chrome to handle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

To switch out of S mode:
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Search for
Switch out of S mode. - Open the Switch out of S mode page.
- Select Get.
- Follow the confirmation instructions.
Switching out of S mode is free, but Microsoft says the change cannot be undone. Afterward, return to Google’s Chrome download page and run the normal installer. Do not confuse the S mode page with an upgrade page: selecting a Windows edition upgrade is a different action.
Install Chrome when the normal download fails
If the regular installer cannot download all of Chrome’s files, use Google’s alternative installer. On Google’s Chrome download page, scroll to the bottom and, under Chrome Family, select Other Platforms. Choose the operating system of the target computer and download the file.
Move that file to the Windows 11 computer—for example, with a USB drive—and run it there. This approach is useful when the target PC has a restricted connection or the standard web installer repeatedly fails.

| OS not supported | The installer does not support the operating system it detected. Confirm that you are running Windows 11 and downloaded the installer from Google’s current Chrome page. |
| Error 4 | A newer Chrome version is already installed. Open the existing Chrome installation instead of running the installer again. |
| Error 31 | Chrome could not be re-installed. Remove the existing Chrome app, restart Windows, and download a fresh installer. |
| Errors 7, 12, 13, 35, 57, 102, or 103 | Google categorizes these as installation failures with unknown causes. Re-download the installer, then try Google’s offline installer. |

Chrome is already installed for all users
If Chrome is installed for every user account on the PC, the installer may tell you that Chrome is already present and open the existing version. To install a different version, uninstall the current Chrome app first, then download and install the desired version. Be careful not to remove profile data unless you specifically intend to do so.

Firewall or antivirus blocks the installer
Firewall software, antivirus software, and some proxy configurations can interfere with Chrome’s download or installation.
For Windows Firewall, Google’s documented path is:
- Open Start, then open Settings.
- Use Find a setting and enter
Firewall. - Choose Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
- Select Change settings, then Allow another app.
- Select Browse.
- Enter
%ProgramFiles(x86)%GoogleGoogleUpdater. - Open the folder with the highest number, select
updater.exe, and choose Add.
Only change firewall rules if you understand your organization’s security policy. On a work or school computer, contact the administrator rather than disabling protections yourself.

On managed networks, a proxy can also be involved. Google lists proxies using Negotiate authentication, including Kerberos and NTLM, as supported scenarios, as well as proxies with integrated authentication when the user is authorized. An unsupported or unauthorized proxy may require help from the network administrator.
When you cannot install Chrome yourself
A managed Windows 11 computer may prevent software installation, restrict access to Google’s download site, or require an administrator to approve changes. Google does not state that an administrator account is universally required for every ordinary Chrome installation, but organizational policies can impose that requirement.
If the PC belongs to an employer, school, or another organization, ask its system administrator. Do not download a modified installer or bypass the organization’s security controls.

Two frequently repeated claims are inaccurate:
- “Chrome only works on Windows 11.” Google currently lists Windows 10 and later for Intel-based PCs. Windows 11 is specifically required for ARM-based Windows PCs.
- “Chrome 109 is the last version for Windows 10.” Chrome 109 was the last version supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, released on January 10, 2023. Google’s current enterprise requirements page lists Chrome deprecation for Windows 10 as “Not yet scheduled.”
These details matter if you are following an old troubleshooting guide or deciding whether an upgrade is necessary before installing Chrome.
