To read a Google Play Books title offline, download it inside the Play Books app on your phone or tablet. To get a separate EPUB or PDF file for a computer or another reading app, use Export from your Play Books library on a computer; that option is available only for eligible titles. These are different kinds of downloads: an in-app copy stays in Play Books, while an export creates a file you can open elsewhere.
Download a book for offline reading on a phone or tablet
- Open the Google Play Books app and sign in to the Google account that owns or can access the book.
- Open your library and find the title.
- Tap or select Download beside the book. When the download is ready, an indicator appears in the library.
- Open the title in Play Books to read it without an internet connection.
To remove the local copy later, select the book and choose Remove download. This frees device storage; it does not remove the title from your account’s library.
Use Wi-Fi for downloads
Play Books has a Wi-Fi-only download setting to help avoid mobile-data charges. Menu labels and their locations vary slightly between Android and iOS, so check the app’s settings on your device.

Offline reading limits
Google says manga chapters are not available for offline reading. If you need a particular chapter while disconnected, do not assume that downloading the title makes that chapter available.
Export a book to your computer as EPUB or PDF
- On a computer, go to the Google Play Books library at
play.google.comand sign in to the account with access to the title. - Open your library or device-books list.
- Beside the title, select More > Export.
- Choose Download EPUB or Download PDF, if either option is offered.
- Open the downloaded file in a compatible ebook app or PDF reader.
Some exports are supplied as an ASCM file. Google’s help instructions say additional software is needed to access or convert that file; it is not the same as a ready-to-open EPUB or PDF.

Why Export may be unavailable
Export depends on the title. A publisher may block it, rentals cannot be exported, and some large files are not exportable. If you are unsure whether a book can be exported, check its Reading information in the Play Store listing.

Choose the right method for another reading device
| What you need | Use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Read without internet on your phone or tablet | Download in the Play Books app | The offline copy is read in Play Books; it is not a separate EPUB or PDF file. |
| Open a book in another app or reader | Export from the computer library | EPUB or PDF is available only when the title allows export. An ASCM file may require additional software. |
| Read on a Kindle | Check compatibility before relying on an export | Google warns that most Play Books titles cannot be opened on Kindle, so an EPUB or PDF export is not a guarantee of Kindle compatibility. |
Save new Android downloads to an SD card
If your Android device supports SD-card storage, Play Books settings include an option to save new downloads to the card. The card must have enough free space, and available settings vary by device.
