Outlook Express was a legacy Windows component associated with Internet Explorer and Windows XP. Microsoft does not provide a Windows 10/11 installer, and compatibility mode is not a supported workaround.
If you are trying to recover old Outlook Express messages, copy the original Outlook Express store and import it into a compatible mail application. If you mean the old Windows Mail app, export its data before moving to new Outlook for Windows.
What happened to Outlook Express?
Outlook Express was discontinued after the Windows XP era. Microsoft replaced it with Windows Mail in Windows Vista; Windows Mail was later followed by Windows Live Mail and newer Windows Mail and Outlook applications.

Windows Mail, Calendar, and People can no longer send or receive messages or events after December 31, 2024. Locally stored data can still be exported where the transition and export tools are available.
Do not download an “Outlook Express for Windows 10” installer
Websites offering an Outlook Express executable, modified installer, or “working” compatibility package are not providing a Microsoft-supported product. The download may be incomplete, modified, or bundled with unwanted software. Outlook Express also depends on obsolete Windows components, so copying its files into a program folder will not create a functioning installation.
Compatibility mode does not change this. It can adjust how some older desktop programs run; it does not recreate Outlook Express’s missing system dependencies or make the application supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Use new Outlook for Windows instead
For a supported replacement, install new Outlook for Windows from the Microsoft Store. If the old Windows Mail app is still installed, Microsoft may show a transition dialog with Open Outlook and Export Data options.

Export data from the old Windows Mail app
Microsoft’s documented export process uses a short PowerShell script to reopen Windows Mail’s transition dialog. It does not install Outlook Express.
- Save or close any work in Windows Mail.
- Select Search on the taskbar, type PowerShell, and press Enter. You normally do not need to run it as administrator.
- Paste this script into the PowerShell window and press Enter:

- When Windows Mail opens, select Export Data in the Windows Mail and Calendar are no longer supported dialog.
- Choose a location for the export and keep the resulting files somewhere safe, preferably on an external drive as well as the PC.
The export contains the following file types:

Only data stored locally is exported. A message that has not been fully downloaded is not copied into the export; it remains on the POP or IMAP account and must be retrieved through that account.
Import Windows Mail messages into new Outlook
Before importing, add the destination email account to new Outlook. The account must already exist in Outlook or there will be no mailbox and folder available for the imported messages.

- Open new Outlook.
- Select Settings, then General, and choose Import.
- Select Start import.
- In File Explorer, open the folder containing the exported .eml files and select Upload.
- Select the destination account and the destination mail folder.
- Select Import.
Import each message folder separately. For example, if the export contains separate folders for Inbox and Sent Items, upload each folder and select the matching destination folder. Do not assume that placing the files in a random Outlook folder will import them.
Import contacts and calendar events
Contacts
- In new Outlook, open People.
- Select the destination account.
- Choose Manage contacts, then Import contacts.
- Select Browse, choose the exported .csv file, and complete the import.
Calendar
- Open Calendar.
- Select Add calendar, then Upload from file.
- Select Browse and choose the exported .ics file.
- Select the destination calendar and choose Import.
Recover messages from a real Outlook Express installation
If the messages came from an actual Outlook Express installation on Windows XP or another older system, do not look for an Outlook Express download for the new PC. Recover the mail store instead.
Outlook Express stores each mail folder in a database file with a .dbx extension. For example, the Inbox is commonly stored as Inbox.dbx. These files are not Outlook data files and cannot simply be copied into an Outlook data folder.
Option 1: Import directly with classic Outlook
Microsoft’s documented wizard is intended for classic Outlook versions that include the legacy import commands, such as Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, or Outlook 2016.

- Open classic Outlook.
- Choose File > Open > Import.
- Select Import Internet Mail and Addresses, then select Next.
- Select Outlook Express.
- Select Import mail, then choose Next.
- Select Finish. Choose Save in Inbox if you want the import summary saved there.
To import the old account settings separately, use File > Open > Import > Import Internet Mail Account Settings > Next > Outlook Express > Next, then follow the wizard.
This is a classic Outlook procedure. New Outlook does not provide the same File > Open > Import Outlook Express wizard.
Option 2: Move the complete store folder
If the old computer and the computer running classic Outlook are different, copy the complete Outlook Express store folder to the destination computer. A shared or network location by itself is not sufficient for Microsoft’s documented process.
- On the old computer, open Outlook Express.
- Choose Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder.
- Copy the complete path shown under Store Location.
- Close Outlook Express before copying the folder.
- Copy the entire store folder, not just one visible .dbx file, to removable storage or another transfer method.
- On the destination computer, use the compatible Outlook import workflow rather than dropping the files into an arbitrary folder.
The store is normally inside a hidden folder. If you need to inspect it manually, enable hidden items in File Explorer using View > Show > Hidden items. Preserve the original folder as a backup and work from a copy.
If you are attempting to open the store in another Outlook Express installation, the legacy procedure is Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder > Change. Select the copied folder, choose OK, accept the prompt to use the messages from the old store, and restart Outlook Express. This procedure is for an existing legacy installation; it is not a way to install Outlook Express on Windows 10/11.

Which migration route should you use?

Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing a download from an unofficial site: Microsoft does not provide a supported Outlook Express installer for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Relying on compatibility mode: it does not make Outlook Express compatible or supported.
- Confusing new Outlook with classic Outlook: the old Outlook Express import wizard is not available in new Outlook.
- Copying only one DBX file: Outlook Express uses a complete store structure, and the files need an appropriate import process.
- Skipping the Windows Mail export: locally stored messages, events, and contacts are different from data still held online by the email provider.
Windows 10 itself reached end of support on October 14, 2025. That does not restore Outlook Express compatibility; it makes moving to a supported mail application more important. Microsoft documents that date in its Windows Mail and Outlook transition guidance.

FAQ
Can I download Outlook Express for Windows 10?
No. Outlook Express is a discontinued Windows XP-era component, and Microsoft does not offer a supported Windows 10 installer.
Can Outlook Express run in compatibility mode?
Compatibility mode is not a supported installation method. It does not recreate the old Windows components Outlook Express required.
Is Windows Mail the same as Outlook Express?
No. Windows Mail replaced Outlook Express in Windows Vista, but it is a separate application. Windows Mail, Calendar, and People support ended December 31, 2024.
Can new Outlook import DBX files directly?

Bottom line: Outlook Express cannot be downloaded or installed as a supported application on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Export Windows Mail data into .eml, .csv, and .ics files for import into new Outlook, or recover an old Outlook Express store and import it with classic Outlook.
