To download a Garry’s Mod map, get it as a Steam Workshop addon through the game’s Addons menu or the Steam Workshop, then open Start New Game and choose it from the map list. If you want other players to receive a map when they join your dedicated server, use the server’s Workshop collection or configure individual Workshop items for client download.
Download a map as a player

Open the Steam Workshop through Steam or browse from Garry’s Mod’s Addons menu. Check that the item is a map intended for Garry’s Mod, and read the author’s instructions and any listed requirements. Workshop maps are addons, and the Addons menu is the game’s interface for downloading and managing them. Facepunch’s Workshop guide and main-menu documentation describe these routes.

Download the map using the game’s Addons menu or its Steam Workshop page. The exact interface wording and completion behavior can vary, so follow the controls shown in Steam or the game rather than relying on a particular button label.

Once the map is available, choose Start New Game, select it from the map list, and start the session. This is the documented route for launching a single-player or local multiplayer game.

If the map is missing from the map list
Check the Workshop item first: confirm it is a Garry’s Mod map, that its download is enabled in the game’s Addons menu, and that you have installed any additional content the author lists. The official documentation describes the general Workshop workflow but does not establish one universal troubleshooting procedure for every map.
Facepunch also describes manually placing third-party addon folders in garrysmod/addons/. That is general addon guidance, not a map-specific guarantee; use manual installation only when the map author provides instructions for the package you downloaded. See Facepunch’s addon guidance.

Make a map available to players on a dedicated server
Use a Workshop collection
Configure the server to download a Steam Workshop collection with +host_workshop_collection WORKSHOPID, or use the documented Workshop ID configuration-file method. Facepunch says the collection must be public or unlisted for the dedicated server to access it. Collections can be nested, and the server downloads their subcollections. Read the dedicated-server Workshop guide.

Disabling automatic Workshop updates can leave the server with an older map version and prevent players from joining. The same guide says cfg/srcds_workshop_ids.txt is available with version 2026.09.22 or newer; this version detail applies to server configuration, not to downloading a map as a player.

Mark an individual Workshop item for clients
Server-side Lua can call resource.AddWorkshop("<item id>") to mark an individual Workshop item for client download. This does not install the addon on the server, and the argument must be a Workshop item ID—not a collection ID. Facepunch’s resource.AddWorkshop reference documents the function.
Consider FastDL or ServerDL only when appropriate
Facepunch documents FastDL and ServerDL as alternatives to Workshop delivery. FastDL requires a separate web server and resource-file setup. ServerDL uses Source networking; Facepunch describes it as obsolete and slow, and warns of an exploit risk if downloads are enabled. See the official serving-content guide before configuring either method.
