For most eligible Windows 11 PCs, the easiest way to get version 26H2 is through Settings > Windows Update. Microsoft is rolling it out in phases, so the update may not appear immediately. If you need installation media, Microsoft also offers an official Windows 11 download page with an ISO and a Media Creation Tool.
Choose the right way to install Windows 11 26H2
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update and the enablement package | Eligible PCs already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 | Requires the September 22, 2026 KB5124010 preview update or a later cumulative update. Availability is phased, and installation completes with one restart. Microsoft’s update announcement; KB5121794. |
| ISO or Media Creation Tool | Creating bootable media, setting up a virtual machine, or upgrading by mounting an ISO | Check compatibility first. The Media Creation Tool creates x64 media; Arm PCs have separate guidance and an Arm64 ISO option. Creating a USB installer erases the drive. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page. |
Install 26H2 through Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if you want to receive updates as soon as Microsoft makes them available to your device.
- Select Check for updates. If the Windows 11, version 26H2 offer appears, select Download & install.
- Follow the prompts and restart when asked.
Microsoft announced general availability on September 29, 2026, but distribution is phased. The switch for receiving the latest updates does not override a compatibility safeguard: Microsoft may hold the offer on devices with a known issue. For many eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs, 26H2 is delivered as a small enablement package rather than a full operating-system download. The two versions share a servicing branch and codebase, so the package activates features already delivered through monthly servicing updates. Microsoft says this installation needs one restart. See KB5121794 for the package details.
If 26H2 does not appear
- Confirm the PC is running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and has the September 22, 2026 KB5124010 preview update or a later cumulative update.
- Check Windows 11 26H2 release health for current rollout status, known issues, and safeguard holds.
- If Microsoft lists a compatibility hold for your device, wait for the issue to be addressed and the offer to become available. Do not treat the absence of the update as proof that a manual installation is required.
Download the ISO or create installation media
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page when you need media for a clean installation, a virtual machine, or an in-place upgrade by mounting the ISO. The page offers the Media Creation Tool for x64 media and separate Arm64 ISO guidance. Microsoft directs Arm PC owners to wait for a Windows Update notification; do not assume the x64 tool is suitable for an Arm device.
- Open the official Windows 11 download page and review the system requirements and available download options.
- Choose the ISO or Media Creation Tool that matches your intended use and device architecture.
- For a bootable USB, connect a blank drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the installation media deletes the drive’s contents.
- Back up files before upgrading, installing, or reinstalling Windows. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media instructions.
- Before proceeding, check your PC manufacturer’s compatibility and driver guidance and review Microsoft’s current release-health page.
Upgrade by mounting an ISO
If you downloaded an ISO to upgrade the Windows installation currently running on the PC, open the ISO in Windows to mount it, then run the installer from the mounted drive and follow its prompts. This is different from booting from a USB for a clean installation. Back up important files before either type of installation.

What the 26H2 enablement package changes
The enablement package applies to supported Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices that have KB5124010 from September 22, 2026, or a later cumulative update. Instead of downloading a complete OS image through Windows Update, it switches on 26H2 features already present through servicing updates. Microsoft’s KB5121794 describes it as a small, quick-to-install “master switch.” A restart is required.
