Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To download HTML that your page already has, wrap the string in a Blob, create a temporary blob: URL, and click an anchor whose download attribute names the file. To download HTML from a URL, fetch the response first, verify response.ok, then use the same Blob-and-anchor step. These are different jobs: browser JavaScript can read a remote response only when its origin and CORS policy allow it.
First decide which HTML you need
“Download the page” can mean several things. Pick the starting point before writing code.
| What you have | Recommended path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| An HTML string generated in your app | Blob → object URL → anchor with download |
Saves exactly the string you provide. |
| A page response at an accessible URL | fetch() → check status → read text or Blob → download |
Gets the server response, not a browser-rendered post-JavaScript DOM. |
| A same-origin file already available at a link | Anchor with download |
The browser suggests a filename and controls the save interaction. |
| The final rendered page, including JavaScript-generated content | Use a browser automation or rendering service | A plain Fetch request does not execute the page’s scripts. |
Download HTML generated in the current page
The reusable function below accepts a string, labels it as UTF-8 HTML, creates a temporary object URL, and starts a user-visible download. The delayed cleanup matters: revoking the URL before the browser has consumed it can cancel access to the data.
function downloadHtml(html, filename = 'page.html') {
const blob = new Blob([html], { type: 'text/html;charset=utf-8' });
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = url;
link.download = filename;
link.click();
setTimeout(() => URL.revokeObjectURL(url), 30000);
}
Call it from a button or another user action:
const html = '<!doctype html><html><body><h1>Saved page</h1></body></html>';
downloadHtml(html, 'saved-page.html');
A browser may show a save prompt, save automatically to its configured Downloads folder, or open the content instead. JavaScript cannot choose an arbitrary local path through this traditional download flow, and it does not silently overwrite an existing file.

Save the current document
If you want the markup currently represented by the document, serialize it before calling the function. Adding the doctype produces a more complete standalone file:
const doctype = document.doctype
? '<!DOCTYPE ' + document.doctype.name + '>'
: '';
const html = doctype + document.documentElement.outerHTML;
downloadHtml(html, 'current-page.html');
This captures the DOM at the moment of serialization. It does not turn a canvas drawing into its original HTML, embed external images or stylesheets, or preserve JavaScript state that is not represented in the markup.
Choose a safe filename
Pass an .html name yourself instead of relying on a default. Treat a filename supplied by a user as untrusted text: remove path separators and control characters, limit its length, and fall back to a simple name such as page.html. The download value is a suggestion, not a guarantee; browser settings and response headers can influence the final name.
Fetch an HTML page, then download its response
Fetching is the retrieval step. Once the body has been read as text, the generated-content function can save it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
async function downloadPage(url, filename = 'page.html') {
const response = await fetch(url);
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status}`);
}
const html = await response.text();
downloadHtml(html, filename);
}
downloadPage('/help/index.html', 'help.html').catch(console.error);
response.ok is true for successful 2xx responses. Checking it prevents an error document, redirect landing page, or server failure from being saved as if it were the requested page.

Read the response as a Blob instead
If you do not need to inspect or modify the markup, keep the response bytes and download them directly:
async function downloadHtmlResponse(url, filename = 'page.html') {
const response = await fetch(url);
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status}`);
const blob = await response.blob();
const objectUrl = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = objectUrl;
link.download = filename;
link.click();
setTimeout(() => URL.revokeObjectURL(objectUrl), 30000);
}
The server’s content type may be preserved when you use response.blob(). If you need guaranteed HTML labeling, read the body as text and create a new Blob with text/html;charset=utf-8.
Same-origin and CORS rules
Browser security determines whether the fetch step can read a URL. A request to your own origin normally works. A different origin must opt in with an appropriate CORS response; JavaScript cannot grant itself permission that the remote server has not provided.
What the download attribute can target
The download attribute is dependable for same-origin URLs and for blob: and data: URLs created by your page. It is not a general cross-origin download override. For a cross-origin HTML file, fetch it only when the server allows the read, then create a local Blob URL as shown above.
Credentials and authenticated pages
Cookies are not automatically sent to every cross-origin request. If an authenticated same-origin page needs cookies, the default fetch behavior is usually sufficient. For a permitted cross-origin request that must include credentials, the server must allow credentialed CORS and your request must opt in:

const response = await fetch('https://example.com/private/page', {
credentials: 'include'
});
Do not add mode: 'no-cors' expecting to read the HTML; an opaque response cannot expose its body to your script. If you control neither the destination nor a permitted server-side proxy, the browser cannot legally bypass this restriction.
Direct links and browser-controlled saving
For a file already hosted on your origin, no fetch is necessary:

link.href = '/exports/report.html';
link.download = 'report.html';
link.click();
The server’s Content-Disposition header can affect whether the browser downloads or displays the response and can influence the filename. Browser preferences also decide whether a prompt appears. You cannot use this API to overwrite an existing file in place.
Let the user choose a location when supported
If your application is an editor and the user must choose a path or update an existing file, consider the File System Access API where the target browser supports it. It requires a user gesture and permission, so feature-detect it and keep the ordinary download as a fallback:
async function saveWithPicker(html) {
if (!window.showSaveFilePicker) {
downloadHtml(html, 'page.html');
return;
}
const handle = await window.showSaveFilePicker({
suggestedName: 'page.html',
types: [{
description: 'HTML document',
accept: { 'text/html': ['.html'] }
}]
});
const writable = await handle.createWritable();
await writable.write(html);
await writable.close();
}
Support and permission behavior vary by browser and deployment context. Verify the API in every browser you promise to support; do not describe it as a universal replacement for downloads.

Server-side alternatives when browser CORS blocks you
If you are allowed to retrieve the URL on a server, the request is no longer constrained by the browser’s CORS read policy. Keep credentials and API keys on the server, validate destination URLs, and avoid building an unrestricted public proxy.

These commands save the response bytes. They still do not execute client-side JavaScript, and a site may require authentication, reject automated requests, or return different content based on headers.
Troubleshooting download failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
TypeError: Failed to fetch |
CORS rejection, network failure, or a blocked mixed-content request | Check the browser console and the server’s CORS headers; use an authorized server-side request when appropriate. |
| The file contains an error page | The HTTP status was never checked | Test response.ok and handle non-2xx statuses before reading the body. |
| The saved HTML lacks content added by a framework | fetch() downloaded the initial response and did not run page scripts |
Serialize the live DOM in the page, or use a rendering-capable browser service. |
| The download opens in a tab | Browser settings or Content-Disposition favor inline display |
Use a Blob URL with download, choose a clear filename, and let the user save it from the browser UI. |
| The file is empty or the click does nothing | The object URL was revoked too soon, or the action was blocked outside a user gesture | Delay URL.revokeObjectURL() and start the download from a button or other user-initiated event. |
| Memory usage spikes on large pages | The full response, string, Blob, and object URL may coexist | Download only when needed, avoid unnecessary string copies, and release the object URL after completion. |
Performance, reliability, and security considerations
- Use one representation: choose
response.text()when you must edit HTML; chooseresponse.blob()when you only need to save it. - Set a timeout for untrusted URLs: combine
AbortControllerwithsetTimeoutso a stalled request does not leave the interface waiting indefinitely. - Keep downloads user-visible: browsers may restrict unsolicited downloads, especially when code runs without a user activation.
- Do not trust downloaded markup: an HTML file can execute scripts when opened. Treat files from untrusted sources as potentially active content and sanitize or inspect them before distributing them.
- Release temporary URLs: call
URL.revokeObjectURL()after the browser has had time to use the URL; immediate revocation can invalidate the download.
Or skip the browser setup
If your real goal is a visual capture or PDF of a rendered URL rather than the raw HTML source, ScreenshotNeo makes that a single API request. It handles the browser session for you and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The request below is the complete cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ
Will downloaded HTML include the page’s images and styles?
Usually it contains references such as relative URLs and stylesheet links, not embedded copies of those assets. The file may look different when opened outside its original site unless those resources remain reachable.
Can JavaScript download a file to a specific folder silently?
No. The normal anchor-download flow leaves the save location and prompting to the browser. A supported file picker can let a user choose a location, but it still requires permission and a user action.
Why does a saved URL page differ from what I see?
A fetched response is the server’s HTML at retrieval time. It does not include later DOM changes made by client-side JavaScript, personalized browser state, or content loaded only after interaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download HTML from a different website with only client-side JavaScript?
Only when that website permits your origin through CORS. Without permission, use an authorized server-side retrieval path or ask the site owner to expose the resource.
Should I use response.text() or response.blob()?
Use response.text() when you need to inspect or modify markup. Use response.blob() when you want to preserve the response bytes and save them without editing.
Does ScreenshotNeo return the original HTML source?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures the rendered page as an image or PDF; use the Blob and Fetch patterns when you need an HTML file.
