Use yt-dlp to download and track a YouTube playlist, save the files to a directory on your mounted SSD, and let FFmpeg merge separate audio and video formats when needed. FFmpeg alone does not find and download playlist items. The example below is a starting point, not a tested command for every Raspberry Pi model or operating system.
What you need before downloading
- A Raspberry Pi and an SSD connected in a way supported by your board.
- A mounted, writable directory on the SSD with enough free space for the videos you intend to keep.
- yt-dlp for extracting playlist items and downloading them, and FFmpeg for merging separate audio and video streams when required.
- The playlist URL and permission to download its contents. Confirm applicable service terms and local law; whether a particular download is permitted depends on the content and circumstances.
Raspberry Pi storage support varies by model and connection. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s current documentation describes microSD as common boot media and says some newer models support USB mass-storage or NVMe boot. Check your exact board’s documentation before choosing a boot or external-storage setup: Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
Choose the SSD’s role and capacity
Decide whether the SSD will hold only videos, the operating system as well, or both. Capacity should be based on the sizes of the videos you plan to retain and whether you will keep older files; the playlist title alone does not establish a suitable size. Raspberry Pi Ltd recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop and Full, or at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Those are boot-media recommendations, not estimates of space needed for a video library. Its statement that SD cards above 2 TB are unsupported because of MBR limitations applies to SD cards, not external SSDs.
Check that the enclosure, cable, power arrangement, filesystem, and mount behavior suit your Pi. Raspberry Pi’s accessories documentation lists SSDs, SSD kits, and M.2 HAT+ storage, but the right option depends on the board and setup: Raspberry Pi accessories documentation.

Mount the SSD and choose a stable destination
Connect the drive, mount it using the method supported by your Raspberry Pi OS and filesystem, and confirm that your user can write to the intended directory. Do not assume a universal device name or mount point: those depend on the board, operating system, filesystem, and connection method. Use the actual mounted path in the commands below, for example /path/on/ssd/videos.
Keep both the video directory and the download archive on persistent storage. If the SSD is absent or mounted elsewhere when yt-dlp runs, a job may fail or save files to an unintended location. Before scheduling repeat downloads, verify the mount and write access each time the job starts.
Install yt-dlp and FFmpeg
Install current versions using the instructions appropriate to your operating system. Installation commands and package versions vary, and this article does not establish a single command for every Pi OS release. Consult the current project instructions for yt-dlp installation and FFmpeg downloads, then confirm both programs are available to the account that will run the download.

yt-dlp handles playlist extraction and downloading. When YouTube provides separate audio and video formats, yt-dlp can call FFmpeg to merge them. That merge does not require re-encoding; transcoding is a separate processing choice and is not necessary just to combine the streams.
Download the playlist to the SSD
Replace the example paths and PLAYLIST_URL with your actual SSD directories and playlist address. Keep the URL quoted, especially when it contains shell-special characters such as &.
yt-dlp --download-archive "/path/on/ssd/archive.txt"
-P "/path/on/ssd/videos"
-o "%(playlist_index)03d - %(title)s [%(id)s].%(ext)s"
"PLAYLIST_URL"
What each option does
--download-archiverecords identifiers for successfully downloaded videos in the archive file.-Psets the destination directory.-osupplies a filename template. This example prefixes each filename with its playlist position and video ID.- The quoted URL is the playlist yt-dlp will process.
The command leaves format selection to yt-dlp’s defaults. If you need a particular codec, resolution, or size limit, inspect the formats actually available for the items and consult the current yt-dlp format-selection documentation. Do not assume every playlist item offers the same formats. The project’s documented -f "bestvideo+bestaudio" example selects separate best video and audio formats and needs FFmpeg to merge them; it is not required when yt-dlp’s default selection is suitable. See the yt-dlp README format-selection examples.

Download only new playlist items on later runs
Run the same command again and keep using the same archive file. yt-dlp checks identifiers recorded there and skips those items, so newly added playlist videos can be downloaded without repeating successful downloads. Only successful downloads are recorded. If you delete or move the archive, yt-dlp no longer has that record for this workflow and may download items again. The yt-dlp FAQ documents the archive option and destination settings.

Schedule repeat downloads safely
For a scheduled job, use the same account, SSD paths, and archive file each time. Arrange for the job to run only after the SSD is mounted and writable; retain logs so you can identify failed runs, and consider a notification when a job exits with an error. These are operational safeguards, not guarantees that a particular playlist will remain accessible.
Some media access may depend on cookies, headers, or matching network conditions, and YouTube extraction behavior can change. A public playlist is not a guarantee that every item will download successfully. Check yt-dlp’s current FAQ for access-related limitations and troubleshooting: yt-dlp FAQ.

- Designed as a basic PCIe expansion board for the Raspberry Pi 5, the X1001 features limited standalone hardware functionality and requires proper OS configuration, stable FFC cable connection, and compatibility between firmware and SSDs for reliable operation.
- Power Supply Requirements: The X1001 is powered directly through the PCIe FFC ribbon cable. For stable operation, use the Raspberry Pi 5 PD 27W USB-C Power Supply (5.1V/5A). Note: Standard phone chargers may not provide sufficient power for NVMe SSDs, which can result in SSD instability, data corruption or drive failure.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Files appear on the Pi’s system storage instead of the SSD | The destination path is not the SSD’s actual mount point, or the drive was not mounted when the command ran. | Check the live mount location, update -P and the archive path, and verify the SSD is mounted before starting. |
| Permission denied or the download cannot create files | The running user cannot write to the destination or archive directory. | Check ownership and write permissions for both directories using the account that runs yt-dlp. |
| Audio or video is missing, or a merge fails | Separate formats were selected but FFmpeg is missing, unavailable to yt-dlp, or failed during merging. | Confirm FFmpeg is installed and accessible to the job’s account; review the error output and current yt-dlp format documentation. |
| The playlist URL is cut off or interpreted as multiple shell arguments | The URL contains shell-special characters and is not quoted. | Put the complete playlist URL in quotes. |
| Previously downloaded items download again | The archive file changed, was deleted, is not writable, or the command points to a different archive. | Use the same persistent archive path on every run and confirm successful downloads can be recorded. |
| Some playlist videos fail while others work | Availability, format selection, or access requirements may differ between items; YouTube extraction conditions can change. | Read the individual error, check the video’s availability and current yt-dlp guidance, and do not assume one format or access method works for the whole playlist. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than build a local SSD archive, StreamNeo is a different workflow:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
