For a browsable local copy of a linked website, use HTTrack for a guided mirror or GNU Wget for a repeatable command-line crawl. Both can download linked pages and resources and rewrite links for offline use. Start with a site and path you are authorized to copy, limit the crawl to what you need, and expect some interactive or login-based pages not to work without an internet connection.

What downloading a website for offline browsing does

A website mirror is a local collection of files—typically HTML pages, images, stylesheets and other resources—arranged so a browser can open the pages from your computer. It is not necessarily a complete copy of everything the live site can do. Server-side features, databases, search, forms, accounts and content assembled by JavaScript may depend on the original server or external services.

HTTrack describes its purpose as downloading a website to a local directory, recursively retrieving HTML, images and other files, and preserving a structure that can be browsed locally. HTTrack’s product page explains the tool and its platform availability.

For a whole linked section or site, use a mirror tool. For a few known documents, download only those files rather than crawling links you do not need. A website download can consume substantial time and disk space, so set a narrow scope before starting.

Download a site with HTTrack

  1. Install HTTrack from its official website. The available interface and installation steps depend on your operating system.
  2. Create a new project and choose a local destination directory with enough free space.
  3. Enter the starting URL. Choose the normal website-download action to follow linked pages, or the get-files mode if you have a finite list of URLs to retrieve.
  4. Set the crawl scope before starting. Use domain and path boundaries, depth limits, and file-type filters to avoid unrelated hosts or sections. A starting URL such as https://example.com/guides/ is narrower than the site’s root.
  5. Run the job. When it finishes, review the reported errors and open the generated local start page or index file in a browser.
  6. Keep the HTTrack project if you may need to continue an interrupted download or update the mirror later.

HTTrack’s documentation covers filters and limits, proxy support, continuation after interruption, updating an existing mirror and browser capture for pages reached through forms or scripts. See the HTTrack documentation for those controls and platform-specific details.

Download a site with GNU Wget

Install GNU Wget for your operating system, then run this representative command in a terminal, replacing the example URL with the section you are permitted to mirror:

wget --recursive --page-requisites --convert-links --no-parent https://example.com/section/

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

  • --recursive follows links and retrieves linked pages.
  • --page-requisites downloads resources needed to render pages, such as images and stylesheets.
  • --convert-links rewrites downloaded references so pages can link to local files when viewed offline.
  • --no-parent prevents the crawl from moving above the chosen URL path.

Wget can follow links in HTML, XHTML and CSS, recreate directory structure, and convert links for local viewing. Its manual also says it respects the Robot Exclusion Standard (robots.txt). Read the GNU Wget manual for the available options and details before using a command on a large site.

After the command completes, inspect the output directory and open the downloaded entry page in a browser. Do not assume that a successful crawl means every page or feature will work offline: a JavaScript application may request data from a live server after its initial files load.

Keep the mirror in scope and store it safely

Limit what the crawler can reach

Choose a starting path that contains the material you want, and use depth, domain, path and file-type controls where available. Without limits, a site can link to many pages, downloads or other hosts that are irrelevant to your offline copy. Recheck the destination directory’s free space before a large crawl.

Use storage that fits the archive

If your computer does not have enough room, a USB flash drive or external SSD can hold the downloaded directory. Estimate the site’s size from a limited initial run or available site information, then choose a device with more capacity than the expected files; crawl size can grow as more linked resources are found. Keep the original directory structure intact so local links continue to resolve.

Continue or update rather than starting over

HTTrack documents continuing interrupted projects and updating an existing mirror. With Wget, use its continuation and logging options when appropriate; consult the manual for the exact flags and behavior for your workflow. Preserve logs so you can distinguish a complete mirror from one that stopped or encountered errors.

What may not work offline

  • JavaScript-rendered content: a page may load its shell but fetch the actual text, images or data from an API after opening. A static mirror may not capture those later requests.
  • Login-protected material: access-controlled pages require authorization and appropriate session handling. HTTrack documents cookie import and browser capture for some cases, but that does not authorize downloading content you are not allowed to access.
  • Forms and interactive features: a local copy cannot necessarily submit data to the original site or reproduce workflows that depend on a live server.
  • External resources: a page may reference fonts, scripts or images hosted on a different domain. If those are outside the crawl scope, the local page may lack them.
  • Large sites: storage and crawl time depend on the number and size of reachable files. Narrow the scope or mirror one section at a time if the full site is impractical.

Troubleshoot common problems

Local links still open the live website

Check that link conversion was enabled. In Wget, the example uses --convert-links; in HTTrack, review the project and link-conversion settings. Also confirm that the pages were actually downloaded and that the crawl stayed within the intended host and path.

Images, styles or other assets are missing

Confirm that the method retrieved page requisites or equivalent assets, and check file-type filters and domain limits. An asset hosted on another domain may have been excluded. If the files are present but the page still looks wrong, the site may load or transform them dynamically.

The crawl stops before it finishes

Check the tool’s error or log output and available disk space. HTTrack offers a continue function for interrupted projects. For Wget, review the manual’s continuation and logging options, then rerun with an appropriate recovery approach rather than assuming the partial output is complete.

A page is blank or incomplete when opened locally

First verify that its HTML and required resources exist in the mirror. If they do, the page may depend on JavaScript, server-side data, a login session or an online service that a static copy cannot provide. Try HTTrack’s documented browser-capture workflow for pages reached through forms or scripts; it may help capture a requested address, but it cannot make every server-dependent feature work offline.

Download responsibly

Check the website’s terms and permissions before making a mirror. Do not use a crawler to collect private or access-controlled material without authorization, and keep request rates reasonable. HTTrack describes its crawler as identifying itself and obeying robots.txt; the GNU Wget manual also says Wget respects the Robot Exclusion Standard. Google explains that robots.txt can manage crawler traffic and keep selected areas from being crawled in its robots.txt documentation. A crawl permission signal is not a substitute for checking the site’s terms or obtaining any required permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download a website to browse without internet?

Yes, if its pages and required resources were captured into a local mirror. Server-dependent features and dynamically fetched content may still require a connection.

Can a website mirror include pages behind a login?

Only when you are authorized and the tool can capture the required session. HTTrack documents cookie import and browser capture for some situations, but protected content is not guaranteed to mirror successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I save just one page instead of a whole website?

Yes. Use HTTrack get-files mode for a finite URL list or download the specific file directly; avoid recursive crawling if you do not need linked pages.
