To save a web page as one ordinary HTML file, install SingleFile from your browser’s official extension store, open the page, wait for it to finish loading, then click SingleFile’s toolbar button. The extension packages the page’s HTML, styles, images, fonts and frames into a portable file and normally places it in your browser’s configured download folder.

This guide covers Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and other supported browsers, explains which options matter, and shows what to do when a saved page does not reproduce perfectly.

Save a page as HTML with SingleFile

  1. Install the extension. Use the official SingleFile Chrome Web Store listing or the SingleFile Firefox Add-ons listing. SingleFile is also listed for Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser and Opera. Store availability can change, so use the listing for your browser rather than an unofficial mirror.
  2. Open the page you want to keep. Navigate to the exact article, receipt, documentation page or other content. Sign in and expand accordions or lazy-loaded sections that you need included.
  3. Wait until loading is complete. Let images, fonts, embedded frames and dynamically inserted content finish loading. Saving too early can produce missing images or an incomplete layout.
  4. Click the SingleFile toolbar button. Pin the extension if its icon is hidden in the browser’s extensions menu. SingleFile processes the current tab and saves the result. Click the button again while it is processing if you need to cancel.
  5. Locate the file. The default destination is the browser’s configured download folder. If you changed the browser’s download location or enabled “ask where to save,” use that selected folder or prompt location.
  6. Open the file. Double-click the resulting .html file or drag it into a browser window. Regular HTML output can be viewed without installing SingleFile.

The project documentation describes this workflow in the SingleFile README. The Chrome listing observed on September 29, 2026 showed version 1.27.0, updated September 27, 2026, and 600,000 users; Firefox showed version 1.27.0 updated September 27, 2026. Those are dated store listings, not a guarantee that the same metadata remains current.

What the extension saves

SingleFile is designed to “Save a complete page into a single HTML file.” It embeds binary resources such as images and fonts, along with CSS and page structure, so you can move one file instead of a folder tree. It is a snapshot, not a promise that every application will work offline: live databases, video streams, authentication sessions, cross-origin restrictions and scripts that expect a server may still fail.

Dynamic and restricted content

  • Save after expanding menus, comments or “load more” controls you need.
  • Some frames or resources may be blocked by site security policies, require a login, or be unavailable when the capture runs.
  • Animations, real-time feeds, forms and server-side actions generally represent the state at capture time and may not remain interactive.

Permissions

Firefox lists access to downloads and download history, browser tabs and data for all websites. Your browser displays the final permission prompt at installation. Chrome’s listing includes the developer’s disclosure that it will not collect or use data; that is the developer’s store statement, not an independent audit.

Choose the right saved-page format

SingleFile’s format comparison distinguishes several one-file and multi-file outputs. If your requirement is specifically “an HTML file,” choose regular HTML.

Format Files Opening requirements and trade-offs
Regular HTML One .html file Viewable without an extension; binary resources are base64-encoded and the comparison notes no compression. Best match for a portable HTML document.
Self-extracting ZIP One file Compressed and viewable without an extension, but JavaScript is required to run the self-extracting viewer.
MHTML One file SingleFile’s table says it opens without an extension only in Chromium-based browsers and Internet Explorer.
Safari Webarchive One file Designed to open without an extension in Safari.
HTML plus folder HTML plus separate resource files Resources remain beside the document; it is not a single-file result.

Do not rename an MHTML or Webarchive file to .html; the internal format and browser support are different.

Useful options after the basic save

The toolbar click is enough for one page. For more control, open SingleFile’s context menu or settings.

  • Selected content: save only a highlighted article or section instead of the entire document.
  • Frames: target a particular embedded frame when a page contains several.
  • Selected links: process links chosen on the page.
  • Tabs: save selected, unpinned or all open tabs for a batch operation.
  • Annotations: add notes to the captured document.
  • Autosave: capture pages automatically according to the extension’s rules.
  • Keyboard shortcut: configure a shortcut instead of using the toolbar.
  • Destinations: the project documents optional Google Drive, GitHub, Amazon S3 and WebDAV destinations; the Chrome listing also names Dropbox. Treat these as optional storage targets, not requirements.

Options can increase processing time and file size. Start with the default settings, then change one option at a time when a specific capture needs it.

Verify an offline copy

  1. Close the original tab or disconnect from the network.
  2. Open the saved .html file in a browser.
  3. Check headings, images, fonts, tables, links and any content that was loaded after scrolling.
  4. Compare the file size with your expectations. A page containing many images can legitimately produce a large HTML file because resources are embedded.
  5. If you need a repeatable record, save a new copy after the page reaches the same visible state and keep the capture date in your filename.

A saved page is not automatically a legally authenticated record. SingleFile documents an optional “proof of existence” feature based on linking a SHA256 hash, but a hash does not establish the truth, authorship or legal admissibility of the content.

Troubleshooting

The icon is missing

Open the browser’s extensions menu and pin SingleFile to the toolbar. Confirm the extension is enabled for the current site and tab.

The result is blank or incomplete

Return to the source page, wait for network activity and lazy images to finish, scroll through sections that load on demand, then capture again. A bot check, login wall, timeout or site security policy can prevent resources from being retrieved.

Images or fonts are missing

Make sure the assets were visible before saving. Try a fresh capture after disabling aggressive content blockers for that site, if doing so is acceptable, and check whether the original resource requires authentication or rejects cross-origin requests.

The file opens but interactions do not work

That is expected for many applications. The file is a point-in-time snapshot; scripts that call an API, submit data or depend on a server may need the original website.

The file is too large

Embedded images and fonts increase size. Save only selected content, remove unnecessary media before capture, or use a compressed self-extracting ZIP when its JavaScript requirement and browser support are acceptable.

Multiple files were created

You likely selected HTML-plus-folder output or used another browser save command. Run SingleFile and choose regular HTML if one file is required.

Saving fails in Firefox

Review the permissions shown by Firefox, ensure downloads are allowed, and verify the destination folder is writable. The official Firefox listing is the correct place to check current compatibility and version details.

When a screenshot or PDF is the better record

HTML preserves structure and can be searched or inspected, but it is not always the best visual record. Use a screenshot when pixel appearance matters, or a PDF when you need paginated output for printing or sharing. Keep the original HTML as well when you need links, text selection or embedded source details.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an image or PDF rather than an offline HTML file, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

One GET request is enough. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

FAQ

Can I save a page without installing software?

SingleFile is the software used for this method, but it is a browser extension installed from the browser’s official store. The browser’s built-in “Save page” command may create an HTML file plus a resource folder instead of one self-contained file.

Will the saved HTML update when the website changes?

No. It records the page state captured at that moment. Capture a new file when you need a later version.

Can I open the file on another operating system?

Regular HTML is intended to be portable, provided the receiving browser can render the embedded content. Site-specific scripts and restricted resources can still behave differently.
