Download 0 A.D.: Empires Ascendant for free from the game’s official download page. The latest release identified by Wildfire Games is Release 28: Boiorix, announced February 18, 2026. Before installing, match the download to your operating system and processor—especially on macOS, where Intel and Apple Silicon use different installers.

Go to the official 0 A.D. download page and choose the instructions for your operating system. Wildfire Games says the game can be downloaded directly at no cost, with no freemium model or in-game advertising. Donations are optional support for the project, not a purchase required to play. The developers announced Release 28: Boiorix on February 18, 2026; check the download page for the current package before installing.
0 A.D. is a historical real-time strategy game in which you lead an ancient civilization, gather resources, and build a military force. Release 28 adds the Germans faction, along with lobby improvements, new game setup options, and engine and platform updates. The project calls this its first release without the Alpha label, while its game listing still describes it as “In development”; the new label is not a claim that development has ended.
Choose the right download for your computer
Windows
Release 28 supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support ended with this release, so choose another supported computer or operating system if you still use either older version. The release includes a 64-bit build intended to address infrequent out-of-memory errors.

macOS
Choose the installer that matches both your Mac’s processor and its macOS version:
- Intel Mac: use the Intel package for macOS 10.15 or later.
- Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later): use the Apple Silicon package for macOS 11.0 or later.
To install, open the downloaded DMG and wait for verification to finish. Then drag the app to your chosen location, such as the Applications folder.

Linux
Release 28 includes an official AppImage, and the project listing identifies a Linux x64 AppImage download. Linux users can also check whether their distribution provides a package through its maintainers; the project works with Snap and Flatpak maintainers. Use the official download instructions or your distribution’s package information to choose the route that suits your system.

Update an existing installation safely
If you already play with mods, deactivate every mod before updating. Wildfire Games recommends this to reduce the risk of conflicts with the new release.

Fix a macOS multiplayer-lobby crash
Some macOS users may encounter a crash when opening the multiplayer lobby. For affected users, the project’s documented workaround is to disable TLS Encryption at Settings > Options > Lobby. This is a troubleshooting step for that issue, not a general security recommendation: the Release 28 announcement says TLS certificate verification is enabled by default and advises against disabling it.

The game listing identifies keyboard and mouse as the input devices, but does not require a particular peripheral. It presents 0 A.D. as a game in development, so expect an actively developed project rather than a finished historical reference. Its ancient-world setting is a game design choice, not a definitive account of history.
