Capture the same page in the same state before and after a change, then label and review the images together. Matching the URL, viewport, browser, data, and interaction state makes it easier to tell whether a visible difference came from your change—or from different capture conditions.
What makes a useful before-and-after comparison?
A screenshot pair is evidence of a visual change, not an explanation by itself. A reviewer needs to know what page is shown, what changed, and whether the two captures were made under comparable conditions.
- Use the same URL or route and the same relevant interaction state.
- Match the viewport dimensions and browser where possible.
- Keep logged-in status, test data, and other page inputs consistent.
- Label each image with the page, viewport, date or commit, and a brief change description.
For example, a useful note might say: “Checkout, 1280 × 800, commit abc123: confirmation message now appears after saving.” This gives a reviewer context without making them infer the intended behavior from pixels alone.
How to capture and present the change
- Choose the target state. Identify the route, relevant interaction, and expected visible result. If the page depends on a login, account, or specific data, record that state too.
- Capture the before image. Save a named screenshot and note the route, viewport, browser, and capture date or commit. Keep the page in the state needed to understand the change.
- Make the website change. Describe the intended result in plain language, such as “navigation wraps to two rows on narrow screens.”
- Capture the after image under matching conditions. Use the same route, viewport, browser, data, and interaction state. Wait for the page to settle before capturing.
- Present both images together. Place them side by side and label them “Before” and “After,” with the context a reviewer needs. Add a concise explanation of the changed region and intended behavior.
- Review the difference. Check whether changes are intentional, and look for unexpected shifts, missing assets, clipping, font changes, or responsive issues. A diff overlay can be useful as a third view, but keep the original images available.
- Keep the record. Attach the pair to the pull request, issue, release note, or change record. For recurring checks, retain and review the reference images alongside the code.
Choose a capture method
| Approach | Setup and repeatability | Review context | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual browser captures | Quick to start; consistency depends on matching conditions each time. | Attach images directly to a ticket or change request. | One-off changes, stakeholder sign-off, and simple documentation. |
| Playwright screenshot assertions | Requires tests and maintained baselines; supports repeatable capture and comparison. | Review baseline changes in version control. | Teams already using Playwright for recurring UI checks. |
| Percy with Playwright | Adds a hosted visual review workflow to Playwright capture. | Central visual snapshot review is part of the documented integration. | Teams seeking shared hosted review and willing to use a vendor service. |
Manual browser captures
For a single change, use your browser’s screenshot facility and an image viewer or editor. This has little setup and works well when images need to go straight into a ticket or approval record. Its main limitation is that people can accidentally capture different viewport sizes, states, or browser conditions.

Playwright Test
If your project uses Playwright, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() can compare a new screenshot with a saved reference. Playwright documents that screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing, and that hover effects present at capture time appear in the screenshot. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation and PageAssertions reference.
A minimal test looks like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout confirmation is visible', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout.png');
});
Run the test normally to compare against the saved reference. If you have reviewed an intended visual change and want to replace the reference, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Treat tolerance settings such as threshold and maxDiffPixels as comparison controls, not proof that a difference is harmless. Playwright recommends committing the snapshot directory to version control and reviewing its changes.

Percy with Playwright
Percy documents an integration that routes Playwright screenshots into its hosted visual review workflow. The described example establishes an initial baseline for a new project and shows later builds for review. See the Percy Playwright integration. This is an optional hosted approach; the cited integration material establishes the technical workflow, not current pricing or partner terms.
Make captures repeatable
- Control the viewport: record exact width and height and reuse them.
- Use stable data: avoid changing names, timestamps, randomized content, or other data that is unrelated to the change.
- Wait for the intended state: wait for a relevant element or content to appear rather than capturing during loading.
- Remove transient states: avoid capturing while a pointer is over a hover-sensitive control unless that hover is the behavior being documented.
- Account for animation: wait for motion to finish or use a consistent test setup that prevents animation from changing the capture.
- Keep the environment steady: use the same browser and, for automated checks, the same capture environment where practical.
These controls reduce noise, but they do not decide whether a difference is correct. A person still needs to review the changed pixels against the intended result.

Review automated differences without hiding real bugs
When an automated comparison fails, inspect the new image and the reference before changing the baseline. Look for both the intended change and unrelated effects such as a shifted layout, clipped text, missing images, altered fonts, or a responsive regression.
- Confirm that the route, data, viewport, and interaction state match the reference run.
- Determine whether the visual change is part of the intended work.
- If it is intended, update the baseline and review the snapshot diff as part of the code change.
- If it is not intended, fix the page or stabilize the capture conditions; do not update the baseline just to make the test pass.
