To document a changing news webpage, schedule a real browser to open it, wait for the relevant content to render, and save a screenshot together with a UTC timestamp and capture metadata. Keep the original image bytes and a manifest in durable storage; a screenshot without a record of its URL, time, browser, and run is much harder to interpret later. The example below uses Playwright and Node.js, with notes on scheduling, verification, failure handling, and when an API can replace browser setup.
What a scheduled screenshot can—and cannot—document
A browser screenshot records what the browser rendered at a particular time and viewport. It can help show how a story or page appeared during a particular capture, but it does not preserve the publisher’s underlying database, prove when the publisher first changed its content, or by itself establish legal proof. A page may differ by location, login state, personalization, consent choices, or live content. Record the conditions alongside the image, and retain the original bytes rather than relying only on a later image comparison.
For a useful archive, each capture should have:
- The exact page URL and capture time in UTC.
- The viewport dimensions, locale, time zone, and device scale factor.
- The browser and automation-library versions.
- The navigation outcome, including an HTTP status when one was received, or an error when navigation failed.
- A unique run identifier and a cryptographic hash of the saved image.
A hash can help detect whether the archived image bytes later changed; it does not prove the image is genuine or that the browser displayed the publisher’s authoritative version. If stronger evidentiary integrity matters, restrict who can write to the archive and keep an auditable record of that access.
Choose the capture method
Playwright
Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-scrollable-page screenshots, as well as PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and configurable scale. Its screenshot API can return a buffer and supports clipping, masking locators, disabling animations, and full-page capture. Those controls make it a practical choice when a recurring archive needs consistent capture settings and noise reduction.

Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a JavaScript automation library with a high-level API for Chrome and Firefox. Its documented uses include navigation, UI interaction, screenshots, PDF generation, and testing. If your existing automation already uses Puppeteer, it can serve the same basic scheduled-capture pattern; keep the browser version and run metadata under control just as you would with Playwright.
Self-hosted or managed browser execution
A self-hosted browser in a container, server, or CI runner gives you direct control over the browser version, network, storage, and schedule, but you operate those pieces. Chrome’s headless mode is intended for unattended operation in servers, containers, and CI/CD pipelines. A managed browser service can reduce browser operations when capture volume or geographic execution grows; Cloudflare Browser Run documents sessions controlled through Puppeteer, Playwright, CDP, or Stagehand. Confirm the service’s current availability, terms, and costs before depending on it.
Build a repeatable Playwright capture
This Node.js example takes one full-page capture per invocation, records a manifest whether the run succeeds or fails, and hashes the saved image. Use a separate scheduled invocation for each target URL. The script fixes the viewport and device scale factor; it also accepts optional selectors to wait for and mask. Start with a small set of pages and check how each publisher renders before increasing the schedule.

Install and pin the browser environment
- Install a current Node.js release supported by your environment.
- In a new project directory, run
npm init -y. - Install Playwright with
npm install --save-exact playwright, then install its Chromium browser withnpx playwright install chromium. - Keep the resulting
package.jsonand lockfile under version control. In repeatable deployments, install from the lockfile and use the browser version installed for that Playwright release rather than silently updating the browser on each run.
Save the capture script
Save this as capture.mjs. The first argument is the target URL. The optional WAIT_FOR_SELECTOR environment variable can name a selector that must appear before capture; MASK_SELECTORS accepts comma-separated CSS selectors for regions such as a changing clock or live ticker. Masks make captures easier to compare but conceal those regions in the saved image, so retain an unmasked original if those details matter.

Its example target is for demonstrating invocation, not a guarantee that a particular publisher will return the same content or permit automated access. Review the publisher’s access rules and use a permitted page.
Adapt the capture to your record
- Capture only the article: use a stable article-body selector with
page.locator('YOUR_SELECTOR').screenshot()instead of a full-page screenshot. ReplaceYOUR_SELECTORwith a selector verified on the target page; a site redesign can invalidate it. - Reduce rendering noise: mask volatile regions, disable animations as shown, and wait for a visible article selector. A fixed delay is not a guarantee that all content has loaded. Lazy-loaded images, ads, and live widgets may still change after the delay.
- Use network idle selectively: some news pages maintain long-lived requests, so waiting for network idle can time out or stall. Prefer a content-specific selector when possible; use a bounded timeout and record failures instead of silently skipping a run.
- Keep capture dimensions stable: viewport, scale, locale, and time zone affect layout and text wrapping. If you change them, record the change and treat the result as a different capture configuration.
Schedule the job and keep the archive durable
On a Linux host with cron, run once at the top of each hour by adding a crontab entry such as:

Cron uses the host’s time zone; if the archive is intended to run on UTC hour boundaries, configure the host or scheduler for UTC and verify the recorded ISO timestamps. If one run can take longer than an hour, prevent overlapping processes or use a queue. Multiple overlapping browser sessions can waste resources and make incomplete runs harder to diagnose.
The sample writes locally. For an archive that must survive host replacement, copy completed image and manifest files to durable object storage or another backed-up store. Keep image and manifest together, key records by URL and capture time, and make captures immutable where the storage system supports it. Treat failures as records too: an error manifest distinguishes a missed or blocked run from a page that simply did not change.

For later review, compare consecutive captures made with the same browser, viewport, and waiting rules. A visual difference can mean a story changed, but it can also reflect a layout shift, consent banner, personalized module, advertisement, or live widget. Preserve the raw images for a person to inspect rather than treating an automated difference as proof of editorial change.

Handle access, privacy, and republication carefully
Do not defeat logins, paywalls, CAPTCHAs, or other access controls to make a capture. Check the publisher’s terms and access policy, limit redistribution, and label any shared capture with its source URL and capture time. A screenshot can contain copyrighted text, photographs, advertisements, or personal information. Get legal review before publicly republishing complete pages or images, particularly when preserving or redistributing a full article.
Troubleshooting recurring captures
The job times out or the page is blank
Check the manifest and log for the navigation error and status. The server may be unable to reach the site, the site may have blocked or challenged automation, or the page may not have rendered its article content before capture. Verify the page manually from the same environment, wait for a stable content selector with a bounded timeout, and do not try to bypass an access control. Keep the failed-run manifest so the archive exposes the gap.

The article is missing from a full-page image
Confirm the final URL and whether the article content is visible in the browser at capture time. Add a wait for the article-body selector rather than relying only on a fixed delay. If the page loads content while scrolling, a single full-page capture may not trigger every lazy-loaded element; test the site’s behavior and use a deliberate scroll-and-wait strategy if permitted, or capture the article element after it becomes visible.
Images differ even when the story seems unchanged
Check whether the viewport, browser version, locale, time zone, consent state, or device scale changed. Compare the manifest as well as the screenshot. Mask known volatile regions only when hiding them is acceptable for the archive, and retain the unmasked bytes if they might matter later.

Look for failed manifests, host restarts, scheduler time-zone changes, and overlapping runs. Alert on missing run intervals, keep logs outside ephemeral containers, and ensure storage writes are atomic or use unique run names so one job cannot overwrite another. A schedule creates opportunities to capture; it cannot guarantee a successful capture when the site or runner is unavailable.

Operational limits to plan for
- Performance: a full-page image can be large and slower than an article-element image. Capture only what the archive needs, control concurrency, and measure storage growth using your own pages and retention policy.
- Reliability: pin the automation and browser versions, monitor exit status and missing intervals, and record failures. Visual stability settings reduce noise, not all page variation.
- Cost: self-hosting consumes runner time, storage, and maintenance effort; managed execution can shift some browser operations to a provider. Compare your actual capture volume, retention, concurrency needs, and provider terms rather than assuming either route is cheaper.
- Reproducibility: a later run may not render identically even with the same code. Keep the browser and configuration record so differences can be interpreted instead of mistaken for content changes.
